The Temecula side: the courses

Temecula's pull is a short list of courses close together. Journey at Pechanga is the signature resort round at $215 public or $175 for hotel guests. Redhawk is the best-known public course, with prepaid slots we saw from $26 to $88. Temecula Creek Inn offers 27 holes. Value options include the Legends at Temeku Hills at $48.99 to $73.99 prepaid. In the Hemet valley, Soboba Springs is $100 to $125 with cart and Hemet Golf Club is $49 to $59. See the Journey at Pechanga guide, the Redhawk guide and the Temecula Creek Inn guide.

Four of the 19 are private: Bear Creek, Canyon Lake, Rancho Monserate and Pauma Valley. See private golf clubs in Temecula.

Weather: the main trade-off

Temecula's winter highs are about 67F with 46 to 47F lows, and December to March is wet, with fog or frost delaying some first tee times. Palm Springs is warmer and drier then. In summer the order reverses: Temecula runs 87 to 89F at the nearest station (warmer inland) and has marine-layer mornings in May and June, while the desert is hotter. Our Temecula weather by month and the Palm Springs weather guide give the numbers.

Who should choose which

  • A golf-and-wine weekend of 2 to 4 days: Temecula. Wine country is the draw. See Temecula golf and wine trip.
  • A snowbird winter with the warmest, driest days: Palm Springs. See Palm Springs winter golf for snowbirds.
  • A snowbird who wants an RV base at a course: Temecula has a Pechanga RV Resort next to Journey and monthly houses; see Temecula snowbird rentals.
  • A summer or shoulder-season trip: Temecula is milder than the desert in summer.
  • October, when desert courses are on overseed: Temecula, though check each course for its own aeration.

Combining both

The two are about 1.5 hours apart by road. Hemet is the bridge: 58 minutes from Palm Springs airport and 33 minutes from Old Town. Soboba Springs is 50 minutes from Old Town. Plan three days in one town and two or three in the other, with a long day in the car between. Borrego Springs is about 100 minutes from Temecula and has a separate guide: Borrego Springs golf from Temecula.

Cost

Temecula has several rounds under $60, a $15 nine-holer at Echo Hills and a $215 public price at Journey. We did not match Palm Springs rates here. See Temecula golf rates and Palm Springs golf rates side by side, and Temecula golf trip cost.

Snowbird notes

Temecula's winter is the snowbird season, about November to March, with highs near 67F and rain 5 to 6 days a month. The bases in our files are an RV resort next to Journey, furnished houses and a 55+ community. See Temecula winter golf for snowbirds and the Palm Springs equivalent.

Time zones

Both towns are on Pacific time with daylight saving, so a combined trip needs no clock change. Arizona visitors are on MST with no daylight saving.

What each town does better

Temecula gives you a close-in cluster: five rounds within 11 minutes of Old Town, a casino resort with its own course, and a wine route east of town. It also has a clear winter story, a snowbird season of about November to March, with RV, house and 55+ options priced in our files.

Palm Springs gives you the larger course list and the warmer, drier winter, and our site has a separate guide for each major course and resort. If your priority is the number of different courses over a week, start there. If it is a short trip with wine, start in Temecula.

What Temecula does not have

Temecula has no equivalent of the desert's long list of resort courses. Its resort rounds are Journey at Pechanga, Temecula Creek Inn and Pala Mesa. Several courses do not publish rates, and a few record gaps remain (the Golf Club of California's access, Menifee Lakes pricing). We say so where it matters.

Using both

One workable plan: fly into Palm Springs, spend three days in the desert, drive 90 minutes to Temecula for two or three days, and fly out of San Diego or Ontario (72 and 65 minutes from Old Town). Check one-way rental fees before committing to that route.

Plan it on the map

Open the Temecula golf map and the Palm Springs golf map side by side. The $49 plan builds a day-by-day trip in whichever town you pick, or a weekly rotation for a longer winter stay.
