Planning a Palm Springs golf trip: season, overseed, base and bookings

A Palm Springs golf trip works best from November to April, based at the end of the valley closest to the courses you want, with your dates checked against each course's fall overseed. The Coachella Valley runs about 25 miles from downtown Palm Springs to La Quinta, so where you sleep decides how much of each day you spend on Highway 111.

This guide covers the four decisions that shape the trip: season, overseed, base and how you book. Prices quoted were seen in 2026 and change by date.

• Time zone: Pacific Time, one hour behind Phoenix in winter.
• Peak golf: January to April, with the highest green fees and the tightest tee sheets.
• Shoulder: November, December and May. Summer: June to September, very hot and very cheap.
• Overseed: most courses close for a few weeks between late September and early November.
• Airport: PSP, 10 minutes from downtown Palm Springs.

Dawn is the hidden variable on a winter Palm Springs golf trip. In January the Thermal airport near La Quinta and Indio averages a 39.0F low against 47.6F at Palm Springs, so the PGA WEST end sees more frost delays and colder first tee times. Plan around the fall overseed

Nearly every course is bermuda overseeded with rye and closes each fall while the rye grows in. Facilities with two or more courses stagger their closures, so one usually stays open. Examples from 2026:

• Desert Willow Mountain View closed September 21 and reopened October 23.
• Indian Canyons North reopened October 30.
• Eagle Falls in Indio reopened November 2, with about two weeks of cart path only.
• The Nicklaus Tournament reopened November 2 and the Stadium reopens November 9.
• Terra Lago South was bookable in mid-October while the North was closed.

Pick your end of the valley

Drive times are free-flow estimates to each course. From Palm Springs to PGA WEST is about 40 minutes each way before traffic, so a group playing four rounds in La Quinta should sleep in La Quinta. Our where to stay in Palm Springs for golf guide compares the bases.

Resorts, hotels or a rental

Golf resorts sell access as much as a room. La Quinta Resort & Club guests can book the Stadium, Nicklaus Tournament, Greg Norman and both Pete Dye resort courses up to 365 days ahead, the clearest edge for a fixed January date. A third-party tracker put its resort fee at $45.60 per room per night. In Indian Wells, the Grand Hyatt resort fee covers preferred tee times and discounted green fees at Indian Wells Golf Resort next door (discount amount not published). JW Marriott Desert Springs has two courses on site.

Plain hotels save money if you are driving anyway. The Residence Inn Palm Desert is 3 minutes from Desert Willow, and the Hampton Inn Indio showed from $109.88 a night before tax for a November 2025 date.

Rentals suit groups and a longer Palm Springs golf trip, but rules vary by city:

• La Quinta: rentals of 30 days or fewer count as short-term and need a city permit, so look for the permit number on PGA WEST rental listings. Golf is not automatically included.
• Palm Springs: stays under 28 nights need a city vacation rental certificate; see Palm Springs monthly rentals.
• Cathedral City: Desert Princess condo rentals listed a 30-day minimum with an HOA contract.

RV and motorcoach resorts cluster in Indio, Thousand Palms, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs. Outdoor Resort Indio takes Class A motorcoaches only, minimum 34 feet, with a 5-night minimum; a resort listing says golf on its own 18-hole executive course is included in the stay, but par, yardage and any cart fees are not published, so call first. Getting there

• PSP: 10 minutes from downtown Palm Springs; in Wikipedia's airline table WestJet is listed year-round to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, with seasonal Canadian service on Air Canada, Flair and Porter. Winter 2026-27 frequencies were not confirmed.
• Ontario (ONT): about 84 minutes free-flow over the San Gorgonio Pass; often cheaper.
• LAX: about 145 minutes free-flow, commonly 2.5 to 4 hours.
• Driving from Calgary: about 27 hours free-flow; winter weather on I-15 through Montana, Idaho and Utah can slow it.

Events that move prices

The BNP Paribas dates come from Visit Greater Palm Springs; some listings say March 1-14. Golf midweek between the April festival weekends can be good value, but avoid booking rooms near Indio on festival weekends. See Palm Springs events.

Booking tee times

• La Quinta Resort guests: 365 days ahead on the five PGA WEST resort courses.
• Escena: online up to 30 days out, with the lowest dynamic rates 0 to 3 days out.
• Desert Willow: public window not published; Platinum Club Card holders get 60 days.
• Classic Club: the club's policy says 60 days and its FAQ says 90.
• Rams Hill: 30 days on the club site.
