The key number: Palm Springs golf trip itinerary: four days, five or six rounds

This Palm Springs golf trip itinerary fits five or six rounds into four days from a mid-valley base in Palm Desert. Play Escena on arrival day, 36 holes at Desert Willow on day two, the PGA West Stadium on day three, with the Nicklaus Tournament if you have legs, and Indian Wells before the flight home. Every drive from the base is under 25 minutes.

It is built for peak season, January to April, when every course is open. Swaps for November, a cheaper version and a Palm Springs-base version follow. Drive times are free-flow estimates; green fees were seen at the dates given and change, so check each tee sheet.

Quick facts

  • Base: Palm Desert, for example the Residence Inn on Cook Street.
  • Rounds: five, or six with a 36-hole day at PGA West.
  • Fly: Palm Springs International (PSP), 10 minutes from downtown Palm Springs.
  • Longest drive from the base: 22 minutes, to the PGA West Stadium.
  • Book first: the Stadium; La Quinta Resort guests can book it 365 days ahead.
  • Avoid: The American Express week (January 21-24, 2027), when the Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament close to the public.

Day 1: land, check in, play Escena

Fly into PSP and play on the way in. Escena sits on the north side of Palm Springs and is the most complete daily-fee round in Palm Springs, a Nicklaus Design course with Tournament tees at 7,173 yards (74.4/133). It books online up to 30 days out, with the lowest dynamic rates 0 to 3 days ahead; in peak season, book when the window opens rather than gamble. Its grill runs late Wednesday to Saturday, with live music Wednesday and Thursday.

Then drive to Palm Desert, about 20 minutes from Escena. See the Escena course guide.

Alternative: Indian Canyons North, 7 minutes from downtown, a 1961 layout under the mountains.

Day 2: 36 holes at Desert Willow

Desert Willow is the City of Palm Desert's 36-hole public resort, 3 minutes from the base. Play the harder course in the morning and the friendlier one after lunch:

Course Back tees Rating / slope Character
Firecliff7,056 yd74.1 / 141Harder; renovated with Mini Verde greens
Mountain View6,913 yd73.0 / 132More forgiving; better for mixed groups

Rates are dynamic. Desert Willow's own estimates for January to mid-April are $125 to $210 prime, $110 to $170 twilight and $65 to $100 at sunset, so an afternoon second round costs less. The public booking window is not published. See the Firecliff course guide and our Desert Willow guide.

Day 3: the PGA West Stadium

This is the round the trip is built around. The Stadium is Pete Dye's island-17th tour course and The American Express host, at 7,300 yards from the Black tees (75.8/148). A user-contributed tracker put it at about $235 from January to April, and GolfNow deals for October 2026 dates ran $165.99 to $232.99 with cart.

Book it first. La Quinta Resort guests can book up to 365 days ahead; the public window is not published. The Nicklaus Tournament course shares the clubhouse and is usually cheaper, about $195 on the same tracker, so the two pair well as a 36-hole day. If 36 is too much, the Greg Norman course, at about $155, is the cheapest of the three tournament-side courses.

The Stadium is 22 minutes from the Residence Inn. See the Stadium course guide and PGA West Stadium Course.

Day 4: Indian Wells, then fly

Indian Wells Golf Resort is the city-owned, Troon-managed 36-hole facility, 9 minutes from the base. For a last morning, the Celebrity is the prettier, more forgiving course (7,038 yards, 74.3/138 from the back). The Players, redesigned by John Fought and reopened in December 2025, is the bigger test at 7,376 yards (75.3/139), but the resort publishes no rates; a 2025 reviewer paid $227 before the renovation. See the Celebrity course guide.

From Indian Wells, allow for the drive back up the valley to PSP for an afternoon flight.

Getting around

You need a car for this Palm Springs golf trip itinerary. Rental cars are on site at PSP, and the courses spread about 40 minutes down the valley, from Escena in north Palm Springs to PGA West in La Quinta. From the Palm Desert base, no drive is longer than 22 minutes on free-flow estimates, but Hwy 111 has traffic lights all the way and peak-season afternoons run slower. Use I-10 and Washington St for PGA West, and leave extra time on BNP Paribas Open days in March, when Washington St and Hwy 111 near Indian Wells are congested.

Which tees to play

Back tees on this route are long and steep. For most groups, the middle sets are the better fit:

Course Middle tee Yards Rating / slope (men)
EscenaMiddle6,11569.4 / 122
Desert Willow FirecliffLavender6,17369.9 / 128
Desert Willow Mountain ViewLavender6,12869.4 / 124
PGA West StadiumWhite6,16670.2 / 133
PGA West Nicklaus TournamentWhite6,06170.0 / 128
Indian Wells CelebrityWhite6,01269.1 / 123

The Stadium's White tees still slope 133, against 148 from the Black, so even the middle tees are a real test there. Its Blue tees, 6,739 yards at 73.1/140, suit the better players in the group.

Green fees for the trip

Added up, that is roughly $860 to $1,060 for all six rounds, or about $670 to $865 without the Nicklaus. These are estimates and dynamic rates, not quotes. See Palm Springs golf trip cost.

The November version

In fall 2026, this Palm Springs golf trip itinerary needs swaps, because several courses are still coming back from overseed:

  • Desert Willow Firecliff is closed November 9 to December 25, so play Mountain View once and add Classic Club, 6 minutes from the base, which reopens November 11.
  • The Stadium reopens November 9 and is cart path only to November 29; the Nicklaus Tournament reopened November 2, cart path only to November 22.
  • The Greg Norman is closed November 9 to December 7.

See Palm Springs golf in October and November for the full list.

The value version

A Palm Springs-base version

If the group wants to walk to dinner, base downtown instead. From the Hyatt Palm Springs, Indian Canyons North is 8 minutes, Tahquitz Creek 9, Escena and Cimarron 11. The trade-off is the drive to PGA West, about 40 minutes from downtown Palm Springs hotels. See where to stay for golf in Palm Springs.

Questions golfers ask

How many rounds can I play on a four-day Palm Springs golf trip?

Five or six. This plan has one round on arrival day, 36 holes at Desert Willow on day two, the PGA West Stadium on day three with the Nicklaus Tournament as an optional second round, and Indian Wells before the flight home.

Where should I stay for a Palm Springs golf trip itinerary?

Mid-valley in Palm Desert keeps every drive short. The Residence Inn Palm Desert is 3 minutes from Desert Willow, 9 from Indian Wells Golf Resort and 22 from the PGA West Stadium on free-flow estimates.

Can I play the Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament on the same day?

Yes. They share a clubhouse at PGA West, and the Nicklaus Tournament works well as the second round of a 36-hole day. The Nicklaus Tournament is usually cheaper than the Stadium; a tracker put them at about $195 and $235 in January to April.

What does this itinerary cost in green fees?

In peak season, roughly $860 to $1,060 per golfer for six rounds using the rates in the green-fee table, before any deals. Desert Willow alone estimates $125 to $210 for a January-April prime time. Twilight times and the value swaps below cut that a lot.

Does this itinerary work in November?

Mostly, with swaps. In 2026, Desert Willow Firecliff is closed November 9 to December 25, so play Mountain View twice or add Classic Club. The Stadium reopens November 9 and is cart path only to November 29.

Is there a cheaper version of this itinerary?

Yes. Swap in Cimarron Boulder, Tahquitz Creek Resort and Mission Hills Gary Player. Early November 2026 rates at Cimarron ran $56.49 after 3 PM, Tahquitz Creek Resort about $64 to $66, and Gary Player was about $50 in the off season.
