Scorecard: PGA West Stadium Course: rates, access and what the round is like

The PGA West Stadium Course is a public-access resort course in La Quinta that anyone can book on the PGA WEST tee sheet or GolfNow, and La Quinta Resort guests can book a year ahead. It is Pete Dye's 1986 design with the island-green 17th. October 2026 online deals ran $165.99 to $232.99 with cart.

It is the valley's bucket-list round and one of three host courses of The American Express each January. This guide covers who can book and when, what it costs across the seasons, the tees, the closing stretch, the 2026 overseed dates and where to stay. Prices were seen November 2, 2026 and change by date and demand.

Quick facts

  • Access: resort course open to the public; La Quinta Resort & Club guests get a 365-day booking window.

Who can play the PGA West Stadium Course

The PGA West Stadium Course is not a private club. It is one of the PGA WEST resort courses, sold to the public through the PGA WEST resort tee sheet and GolfNow. The private PGA WEST courses (the Palmer, Nicklaus and Weiskopf Private courses) are a different thing: members only, and you play them as a member's guest.

Guests of La Quinta Resort & Club book through a separate resort-guest link up to 365 days ahead, and the resort also sells Stay & Play packages. The public booking window is not published. That one-year window is the clearest edge for a group set on a specific January or February date. The resort does not publish guest green fees, so ask for the rate when you book the room.

Renting a home at PGA West does not automatically come with golf. For PGA West home and condo rentals, one listing says guests may not use the course without a tee time arranged with PGA West. Book and pay separately unless the owner says otherwise in writing.

What the Stadium Course costs

Rates are dynamic, with no published rack sheet. These are the published figures, with their sources and dates.

The peak and summer numbers are user-contributed estimates, so treat them as a guide. The pattern is clear enough: January to April is the most expensive time to play it, summer is the cheapest, and the fall shoulder sits in between. For the whole valley by season, see Palm Springs golf rates.

The round and the 17th

This is target golf in the desert: railroad ties, pot bunkers, huge waste bunkers and water on the closing stretch. The holes people come for are near the end.

  • No. 16, San Andreas Fault: a par 5 with a greenside bunker about 19 feet deep.
  • No. 17, Alcatraz: a short par 3 to an island green.
  • No. 18: water stays in play to the finish.
  • No. 5, Double Trouble: an early carry over water.

The course went through a multi-year restoration that ended with a November 2024 reopening. All 18 greens and the practice putting green were rebuilt, and the bunkers were restored toward the 1986 look. So the greens are new since late 2024. Afterward, Ernie's Bar & Grill is in the Tournament Clubhouse, and the PGA WEST Golf Academy (760-564-7144) works from the same address.

Overseed and the best months to play

Like nearly every course in the valley, the Stadium is bermuda overseeded with rye, and it closes each fall while the rye grows in. PGA WEST staggers its resort courses so something is always open.

PGA WEST resort course 2026 overseed closure Cart path only after
Pete Dye DunesSep 28 to Oct 26Oct 26 to Nov 15
Jack Nicklaus TournamentOct 5 to Nov 2Nov 2 to 22
Pete Dye StadiumOct 12 to Nov 9Nov 9 to 29
Pete Dye MountainOct 19 to Nov 16Nov 16 to Dec 6
Greg NormanNov 9 to Dec 7Dec 7 to 27

For a round on settled rye with carts back on the fairways, aim for December onward. January to April is peak season and peak price. Note that the east valley has cold dawns: the normal January low at Thermal, the nearest station, is 39.0F against 47.6F at Palm Springs airport, so early tee times at the La Quinta end start colder. Read Palm Springs golf overseed and the best time to golf in Palm Springs.

The American Express week

The Stadium is a host course of The American Express, the valley's PGA Tour stop, with the Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club. The 2027 event is scheduled for January 21 to 24. The Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament close to public play for tournament week and setup, La Quinta and PGA West area rooms fill, and Hwy 111, Washington St and PGA Blvd get heavy traffic. If your trip overlaps, either watch the event or play elsewhere that week. See Palm Springs events.

Is the PGA West Stadium Course worth it?

For a golfer who wants one famous round in the desert, yes. It is the course on television, the 17th is the shot everyone remembers, and the rebuilt greens are recent. The trade-offs are real: it is the hardest and usually the most expensive of the three PGA WEST tournament-side courses, the back tees are too much for most visitors, and in peak season you pay the top of the range.

If price matters, the Nicklaus Tournament Course plays from the same clubhouse. A tracker put it at about $195 in peak season against about $235 for the Stadium, and it rates 75.3/143 from 7,204 yards. Pairing the two makes a 36-hole day. The Greg Norman Course is usually the cheapest of the three tournament-side courses, about $155 at peak by the same tracker. Compare all three in our PGA West golf guide, or see the Stadium course guide and the Nicklaus Tournament course guide.

Closer to La Quinta Resort, Pete Dye Dunes and Pete Dye Mountain give you Dye design away from the tour-host courses. The Dunes is often the lowest-priced PGA WEST resort tee time on GolfNow, and GolfPass listed it from $56 (seen November 2026; rates change).

Getting a tee time

  • Public: the PGA WEST resort tee sheet or GolfNow. Prices are dynamic and the public window is not published.
  • Resort guests: La Quinta Resort & Club's guest link, up to 365 days ahead.
  • Packages: Stay & Play through La Quinta Resort; prices not shown on the golf page.

Book early for January to April, and check tournament week before you lock dates. See Palm Springs tee times.

Where to stay

  • PGA West home and condo rentals: about 1 minute from the first tee, but golf is booked separately. La Quinta treats stays of 30 days or fewer as short-term rentals needing a city permit.
  • La Quinta Resort & Club: the 365-day booking window, about 10 minutes away. A third-party tracker lists a $45.60 nightly resort fee (updated February 2026), and self-parking is reported at $25 a night.
  • Embassy Suites La Quinta: about 10 minutes, two-room suites with free breakfast and parking. AAA showed it from $148, date of stay not stated.
  • Indian Wells RV Resort: about 9 minutes, for RV travellers.
