Guide emblem: La Quinta Resort golf: the Pete Dye Mountain and Dunes courses

La Quinta Resort golf means two Pete Dye courses, the Mountain and the Dunes, both opened in 1981 and now sold under the PGA WEST name. The public can book them on the PGA WEST tee sheet or GolfNow, and resort guests can book a year ahead. GolfPass listed the Dunes from $56.

This guide explains the name change, compares the two courses, lists the 2026 overseed dates and covers what staying at La Quinta Resort & Club gets you. Prices were seen November 2, 2026 and change with season and demand.

Quick facts

  • Courses: PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain and PGA WEST Pete Dye Dunes, formerly La Quinta Resort Mountain and Dunes.
  • Designer and year: Pete Dye, 1981, both par 72.
  • Access: open to the public; La Quinta Resort guests book up to 365 days ahead.
  • Clubhouse: Pete Dye Clubhouse at La Quinta Resort, 760-564-7610.
  • 2026 overseed: Dunes reopened October 26; Mountain reopens November 16.
  • Lowest price seen: Dunes from $56 on GolfPass.

What changed: from La Quinta Resort to PGA WEST

The two courses beside La Quinta Resort & Club used to be sold as the La Quinta Resort Mountain and Dunes courses. They are now listed as PGA WEST resort courses, alongside the Stadium, the Nicklaus Tournament and the Greg Norman. Booking sites show them as PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain and PGA WEST Pete Dye Dunes, but plenty of golfers and older listings still use the resort names. They are the same courses, and they still play from the Pete Dye Clubhouse at the resort, not from the PGA WEST clubhouses about 10 minutes south.

La Quinta Resort golf access

Both courses are open to anyone. The public books on the PGA WEST resort tee sheet (ezlinks) or GolfNow. Resort guests use a separate resort-guest link that opens up to 365 days ahead, and that window covers all five resort courses. The public window is not published.

Guest perks listed by the resort:

  • 365-day tee-time booking on all five resort courses.
  • Complimentary bag storage.
  • The Mountain and Dunes start at the resort.
  • A Stay & Play package on the golf page, with no prices shown.

Guest green fees are not published on the resort's golf page. Ask for the rate when you book the room, and ask whether a Stay & Play package bundles La Quinta Resort golf more cheaply than booking rounds one by one.

One thing a guest does not get is a course at the door for every round. The Mountain and Dunes start at the resort, but the Stadium, Nicklaus Tournament and Greg Norman courses are about 10 minutes' drive south, so plan on a car or the resort's golf shuttle, which is listed among its amenities.

The Mountain is the scenic one. It is built right against the Santa Rosa Mountains, with rock outcrops, desert edges and small greens. It is shorter than the PGA WEST tournament courses but the rock framing and the small targets keep it honest. It is walkable from La Quinta Resort rooms, which makes it a natural first-day round for guests.

The Dunes is the value end of the lineup. It is a desert links-style course with mounded fairways and Dye pot bunkers, and it is often the lowest-priced PGA WEST resort tee time on GolfNow. In 2026 it was also the first PGA WEST course back from overseed.

La Quinta Resort golf rates

Neither course has a published rate card. For the Dunes, GolfPass listed "from $56" and hot deals were seen at about $74 to $152 including fees, undated. For the Mountain, no published or reliable rate was found when checked on November 2, 2026. Treat both as dynamic: expect the January to April peak to cost the most and summer the least, as across the valley. For the big picture, read Palm Springs golf rates and cheap golf in Palm Springs.

Fall 2026: which course is open

PGA WEST staggers the overseed so at least one resort course is always open. For La Quinta Resort golf in fall 2026, that works out like this:

  • Through October 25: the Dunes was closed (since September 28); the Mountain was open until October 19.
  • October 26 to November 15: the Dunes is back, cart path only.
  • November 16 to December 6: the Mountain is back, cart path only, and the Dunes is on full carts.
  • From December 7: both courses on settled rye.

The Pete Dye Clubhouse practice facility was closed October 5 to November 1, 2026. See Palm Springs golf overseed for every course's dates.

Staying at La Quinta Resort & Club

The resort opened in 1926 and is a Hilton Curio Collection property, with Spanish-style casitas spread around dozens of pools, Spa La Quinta and several restaurants. Old Town La Quinta, a small walkable village of shops and restaurants, is about 5 minutes away. Phone 760-564-4111.

What to budget for beyond the room:

  • Resort fee: $45.60 per room per night (resortfeechecker.com, updated February 2026; third party). Older listings show $35 to $40.
  • Parking: self-parking reported at $25 a night and valet $30 (third-party 2026 guide, not confirmed on the resort site).

That adds about $70 a night before tax. Nightly room rates were not read, so check hilton.com for your dates. For a group, the multi-bedroom villas are the pick.

Other bases nearby:

  • Embassy Suites La Quinta: about 4 minutes from the Mountain and Dunes, two-room suites with free breakfast and parking. AAA listed it from $148, stay date not stated.
  • PGA West home and condo rentals: for a longer stay. Golf is not included unless the owner says so, though homes managed by La Quinta Resort Leasing include La Quinta Resort facility use.
  • Indian Wells RV Resort: about 8 minutes, for RV travellers.

Building a La Quinta Resort golf week

A guest who wants five rounds without driving far can play the Pete Dye Mountain and Pete Dye Dunes from the resort, then use the 365-day window to lock in the Stadium Course and the Nicklaus Tournament Course about 10 minutes south. The Greg Norman Course is the fifth resort course, with its own clubhouse. For a city-owned alternative nearby, SilverRock is about 8 minutes from the resort.
