A Tucson golf trip works best when you pick one area as a base, play between November and April, and mix one or two resort rounds with cheaper public courses. Starr Pass and Omni Tucson National sell public tee times; Ventana Canyon and Dove Mountain need a resort stay. Most trips run three to five days.
Tucson is not one golf town but five areas strung along I-10 and I-19, from Marana in the northwest to Tubac in the south. Knowing how those pieces fit, and when the courses are at their best, saves you a lot of driving and a few wasted tee times.
Quick facts
- Best months: November and February to April; March is the best weather month.
- Overseed: many courses close or restrict play from mid-September into October.
- Airports: Tucson (TUS), about 17 minutes from downtown; Phoenix (PHX), about 2 hours.
- Time zone: Mountain Standard Time all year, no daylight saving.
- Resort courses with public times: Starr Pass, Omni Tucson National, Sewailo, Tubac.
- Resort guests only: Ventana Canyon (Loews and the Lodge), Dove Mountain (Ritz-Carlton).
- Car: essential.
The five areas of a Tucson golf trip
Central Tucson and the Tucson Mountains. The city courses (Randolph North, El Rio, Silverbell) are 7 to 14 minutes from downtown, and Starr Pass is 11 minutes west. Sewailo at Casino Del Sol is 22 minutes southwest, near the airport.
The Catalina Foothills and northeast. This is resort country: Loews Ventana Canyon and the Westin La Paloma. The golf next to both is restricted, so the public option is Arizona National, 35 minutes from downtown.
Northwest Tucson and Marana. The Omni Tucson National resort has 36 holes, with Crooked Tree 8 minutes away and Quarry Pines 11. Dove Mountain sits farther out, 38 minutes from downtown.
Oro Valley and SaddleBrooke. The town-owned El Conquistador courses are about 26 minutes from downtown, and the SaddleBrooke communities 45 to 51.
Green Valley and Tubac. Down I-19, Haven, Torres Blancas, San Ignacio and Canoa Ranch are 36 to 44 minutes from downtown. Tubac Golf Resort is about an hour.
Our guide to where to stay in Tucson for golf matches each area to a base.
When to go
| Month | Tucson high / low | Rain | What it means for a golf trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 86F / 59F | 0.67 in | Overseed closures early in the month; check each course |
| November | 75F / 48F | 0.56 in | Fresh rye, dry and sunny; season starts |
| December | 66F / 41F | 0.96 in | Coldest nights, frost delays likely; holiday weeks busy |
| January | 67F / 41F | 0.84 in | Peak season; chilly dawns |
| February | 69F / 43F | 0.84 in | Gem shows fill hotels late January to mid-February |
| March | 76F / 48F | 0.56 in | Best golf month; peak rates, Cologuard Classic |
| April | 83F / 53F | 0.24 in | Very dry; rates step down after Easter (March 28, 2027) |
These are NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Tucson International Airport. Green Valley runs colder at dawn (a January normal low of 36.1F), so the first tee times there can carry frost delays. Summer brings highs over 100F in June and July and the July-September monsoon, with the cheapest rates of the year. For the full year, see best time to golf in Tucson.
The busiest weeks are not always about golf. The gem and mineral shows, roughly January 27 to February 14, 2027, are the biggest hotel crunch of the year, so book February rooms early or base in Oro Valley, Marana or Green Valley. Our Tucson golf events guide lists the others.
Resort courses or city courses?
The honest answer for most groups is both.
Resort rounds are where Tucson's desert golf shows off. Starr Pass has three desert nines with new TifEagle greens and a 141 slope from the Gold tees. Omni Tucson National's Catalina course is the old tour course, home of the Cologuard Classic from 2015 to 2023. Sewailo plays 7,283 yards from the tips. None published 2026-27 rack rates when we checked, so price them on the tee sheet. The Starr Pass course guide and Catalina course guide have the tee-by-tee numbers.
The trophy resort courses depend on where you sleep. Ventana Canyon's two Fazio courses alternate daily between member and resort play for guests of Loews and the Lodge. Dove Mountain is for Ritz-Carlton guests and members, with peak rates listed at $250 to $360 in 2024. La Paloma is private.
City and public courses keep the budget sane. Summer 2026 listings had El Rio at about $29 to $33 and Silverbell at about $30, and the city's winter rates at Randolph start at $50 (undated). The 2026 Tucson City Card was listed at $50 plus tax for the rest of 2026. In Green Valley, Haven was $44.99 with cart for October 18, 2026.
A balanced four-day trip might be Starr Pass, a day at Omni Tucson National, Sewailo and one value round in Green Valley or at a city course. Our best golf courses in Tucson list ranks the options, and the Tucson golf trip itinerary lays out four days and four courses.
Getting there and getting around
Tucson International (TUS) is on the south side, about 17 minutes from downtown. It has nonstops on Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, Sun Country and United to cities including Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Atlanta, Seattle, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, but no nonstop from Canada.
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is about 2 hours and 110 miles away on I-10, often longer with traffic. It has the Canadian nonstops and many more US flights, and Marana and Oro Valley are a little closer to it than downtown Tucson is. See flights to Tucson.
Arizona does not change its clocks. From November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, Tucson is one hour ahead of California and Las Vegas, which matters when you book a first tee time from home.
What to book first
- Rooms, especially for February and March, and especially if you want Loews or the Ritz-Carlton for their golf.
- Resort tee times with the room, since guest access is the only way onto Ventana Canyon and Dove Mountain.
- Public tee times as soon as each course's window opens. Most do not publish a window; the City Card gives 7-day advance booking at city courses.
- A plan B for October, if you are going early: check overseed dates course by course. Our Tucson golf overseed guide shows the pattern.
If you are weighing Arizona towns, compare the Yuma golf map.
Mistakes that cost a Tucson golf trip
- Booking October blind. Overseed closures run from mid-September into October. In 2025 El Rio and Silverbell were closed September 15 to October 3, and Silverbell stayed cart-path-only to October 17.
- Forgetting the rotation. Ventana Canyon's two courses alternate daily between member and resort play, so a one-night stay may not get you the course you wanted.
- Planning on a private club. La Paloma, The Gallery, Skyline, Tucson Country Club, Oro Valley Country Club, Stone Canyon, Desert Hills and the Country Club of Green Valley are private.
- Using stale lists. Del Lago in Vail closed in August 2026 and Vistoso in Oro Valley in 2018, but some directories still show them.
- Ignoring dawn temperatures. January lows are about 41F at the airport and about 36F in Green Valley, so the first tee times can carry frost delays.
- Missing the road closures. El Tour de Tucson on November 21, 2026 brings rolling closures across Tucson, Marana and Oro Valley.
- Expecting 27 holes at Tubac. The Anza nine is closed for new greens until about January 2027.
Short trip or a winter?
Most visitors come for three to five days, but Tucson also does long stays. Snowbirds fill Green Valley, SaddleBrooke and the RV resorts from late October, often renting by the month and playing community and public courses on member or resident rates. Quail Creek in Sahuarita, for example, charged non-residents $130 for 18 in prime season 2026, but renters inside the community paid $84 plus cart. If you are thinking of a month or more, read Tucson winter golf before booking a resort.

Questions golfers ask
What is the best month for a Tucson golf trip?
March is the pick on weather: NOAA normals at the airport are about 76F highs and 48F lows with only 0.56 inches of rain. November is close behind at about 75F and fresh rye on overseeded courses. Both are busy, and March also brings the Cologuard Classic and the Festival of Books.
How many days do I need for a Tucson golf trip?
Three to five days covers the main resort and public courses. The courses spread from Marana to Tubac, so group rounds by area and base near the courses you will play most.
Should I fly into Tucson or Phoenix?
Tucson International (TUS) is about 17 minutes from downtown and has nonstops from cities including Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Atlanta, Seattle and Los Angeles. Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) has far more flights, including Canadian nonstops, but is about 2 hours away on I-10.
Can I play Ventana Canyon or Dove Mountain on a Tucson golf trip?
Only if you stay at the right resort. The Ventana Canyon courses are shared by members and guests of Loews Ventana Canyon and the Lodge at Ventana Canyon. Dove Mountain is for members and guests of The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain.
Is October a good time for a Tucson golf trip?
Only with care. October normals are pleasant, about 86F highs, but many courses close or restrict play for overseed from mid-September into October. In 2026 Sewailo was closed September 14 to October 1 and cart-path-only to October 23.
What time zone is Tucson in?
Arizona keeps Mountain Standard Time all year with no daylight saving. From November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, Tucson is one hour ahead of California and Las Vegas; in summer the clocks match.
Do I need a car in Tucson for golf?
Yes. From downtown, Starr Pass is about 11 minutes, Omni Tucson National 23, Green Valley's courses 36 to 44 and Tubac about 60. There is no practical way to reach the courses without one.
