Cover: The best golf courses in Tucson, ranked with the trade-offs

The best golf courses in Tucson that a visitor can book are Starr Pass, Sewailo, Omni Tucson National's Catalina course and Arizona National. Ventana Canyon and Dove Mountain rank with them but need a resort stay. For value, Fred Enke, El Conquistador and San Ignacio lead the list.

This is our short list, ranked for a visiting golfer who wants the best round for the trip, not a members-only wish list. Each pick comes with the catch, because in Tucson the catch is often who is allowed on the tee.

Quick facts

  • Best course most visitors can book: Starr Pass, 27 holes, 11 minutes from downtown.
  • Best if you stay at the resort: Ventana Canyon (Loews) and Dove Mountain (Ritz-Carlton).
  • Best length and conditioning on the south side: Sewailo, 7,283 yards from the tips.
  • Tour history: Omni Tucson National Catalina, Cologuard Classic host 2015-2023.
  • Best value: Fred Enke (city rates, desert golf) and El Conquistador (town-owned).
  • Private and not on this list: La Paloma, Stone Canyon, The Gallery and other clubs.

Prices were seen in 2026 unless noted, change with season and demand, and several courses publish no rate card. Check the tee sheet for your date.

1. Starr Pass: the best golf course in Tucson you can just book

The Club at Starr Pass has three desert nines in the Tucson Mountains with big elevation change and forced carries. Every bunker was rebuilt in 2024, all three nines got new TifEagle bermuda greens, and the clubhouse reopened on November 1, 2025. It hosted PGA TOUR Q-School Stage 2 in December 2025.

The catch: no rates were readable online in October 2026. The nines were renamed in 2025 (Gambler, Pioneer and Palmer), so older scorecards will confuse you. Our Starr Pass golf guide covers the 27 holes and the resort.

2. Ventana Canyon Mountain: best Fazio golf, if you stay

The Ventana Canyon Mountain course is a Tom Fazio desert course in the Catalina Foothills, home of the 107-yard par-3 3rd over a ravine. The sister Canyon course finishes with a par 5 to a partial island green below the hotel.

The catch: the club is member-owned and the two courses alternate daily between member and resort play. Visitors get on by staying at Loews Ventana Canyon or the Lodge at Ventana Canyon. See the Ventana Canyon Mountain course guide.

3. Sewailo: the length and the conditioning

Sewailo Golf Club is a modern Notah Begay III design beside Casino Del Sol on the southwest side, with lakes, water features and five tee sets. Most visitors will be happier on Jade (6,341 yards) or the Ruby/Jade combo (6,512) than on the 7,283-yard Bear Down tees.

The catch: dynamic pricing. An undated review site gave $69 to $161 with cart, so check the day's rate. It closed for overseed September 14 to October 1, 2026.

4. Omni Tucson National Catalina: the tour course

The Catalina course at Omni Tucson National opened in 1962 and is a tree-lined layout with lakes. Its 18th is the old PGA Tour and Champions Tour finishing hole; the Cologuard Classic was played here from 2015 to 2023. The shorter Sonoran course is a 6,529-yard par 70 with 69 bunkers.

The catch: no 2026 rate card was readable, and overseed dates were not confirmed. Northwest Tucson is a fair drive from the foothills. Our Omni Tucson National golf guide has both courses.

5. Arizona National: the foothills alternative

Arizona National is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. desert course at the base of the Santa Catalinas near Sabino Canyon. It is a membership club that sells public tee times online and markets itself as voted Best Public Golf Course in Tucson.

The catch: 35 minutes from downtown, cart mandatory, collared shirt and no denim. Winter rates were not published.

6. Dove Mountain: the trophy round

The Golf Club at Dove Mountain is a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature course that hosted the WGC-Accenture Match Play from 2009 to 2014. Golf Digest Arizona ranked it #25 for 2025-26.

The catch: only members and guests of The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain can play, and peak rates were listed at $250 to $360 in 2024. It ranks sixth here only because most visitors cannot get on. Read our Dove Mountain golf guide.

7. Canoa Ranch: best-conditioned round in Green Valley

Canoa Ranch is a 2003 Schmidt-Curley desert course with bentgrass greens and views of Elephant Head. Its forward tees play just 4,440 yards, which helps higher handicappers.

The catch: 44 minutes from downtown, and no rates were published in October 2026.

8. El Conquistador: scenery at town prices

The town of Oro Valley owns the Conquistador course under Pusch Ridge, managed by Troon. Late-October 2026 times ran $46.69 to $85.79 a player. Its sister, the Cañada course, had no times on October 27, 2026.

The catch: members have priority, and the courses are about 26 to 28 minutes from downtown.

9. Fred Enke: desert golf at a muni price

Fred Enke is the only desert-target course among the city courses, with turf only on tees, landing areas and greens and a 135 slope from the back. It is the cheap way to try target golf before paying resort rates. See the Fred Enke course guide.

The catch: east side, 23 minutes from downtown, and no 2026 rate card was found.

10. San Ignacio: an Arthur Hills course in Green Valley

San Ignacio is a 1989 Arthur Hills desert layout with a 522-yard par-5 13th from elevated tees. Late-October 2026 rates ran $41.88 to $71.61; September prepaid deals were $27.99 to $43.99.

The catch: late-October rates were higher than the September prepaid deals, so check the rate for your date.

What did not make the list, and why

Some of the best golf courses in Tucson are private. Stone Canyon in Oro Valley ranked #6 in Golf Digest Arizona's 2023-24 list, and The Gallery's North course ranked #29 for 2025-26, but both are member-only. La Paloma, the current home of the Cologuard Classic, is a private 27-hole Nicklaus club. See private golf clubs in Tucson and our full list of Tucson golf courses.

How to use this list

For a three-to-five-day trip, a strong mix is Starr Pass, one day at Omni Tucson National, Sewailo and one value round. If you are willing to pay for a resort, choose the stay first: Loews for Ventana Canyon, the Ritz-Carlton for Dove Mountain. Our guide to Tucson golf resorts compares them, and best time to golf in Tucson shows when conditions peak. For a cheaper Arizona winter, the best golf courses in Yuma list is a useful contrast.
