The key number: Things to do in Tucson on a day off golf: Saguaro, Sabino Canyon, the Desert Museum and Mount Lemmon

The best things to do in Tucson on a day off golf are outdoors: the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park West, Sabino Canyon, Saguaro National Park East and the drive up Mount Lemmon. For bad weather, Pima Air & Space and the Titan Missile Museum fill a day. Most sit within a short drive of a course, so you can pair them.

Golf trips to Tucson usually have a spare afternoon, and winter stays have whole off-days. This guide groups the main sights by area and names the courses nearby, so a non-golf day does not mean a long drive.

Quick facts

  • Half-day classic: Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum plus Saguaro National Park West, west of Starr Pass.
  • Easiest hike or tram: Sabino Canyon, about 1.4 miles straight-line from the Ventana Canyon courses.
  • Cool-off: Mount Lemmon, about 27 miles up the Catalina Highway to about 9,100 ft.
  • Rainy day: Pima Air & Space Museum (half a day or more).
  • South of town: Titan Missile Museum, Mission San Xavier del Bac, Madera Canyon, Tubac.
  • Fees: NPS fees at Saguaro; day-use fees at Sabino and Madera canyons; San Xavier is free.

West side: Desert Museum and Saguaro West

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is part zoo, botanical garden and natural-history museum of the Sonoran Desert, mostly outdoors on about 2 miles of paths. Go early and allow half a day. Saguaro National Park West (Tucson Mountain District) is next door, with the Red Hills Visitor Center, dense saguaro forest, the gravel Bajada Loop scenic drive and short trails. An NPS entrance fee applies.

Pair it with a round at Starr Pass, the desert canyon resort course in the Tucson Mountains west of downtown. See the Starr Pass course guide.

East side: Saguaro East and Pima Air & Space

Saguaro National Park East (Rincon Mountain District) has the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center and the 8-mile paved Cactus Forest Loop Drive, good for walkers and cyclists. It sits near the east-side courses: Fred Enke, the city's only desert-target course, and Forty Niner, an older Bell layout that takes public play. See the Fred Enke course guide.

Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest aerospace museums in the world, with hangars and a large outdoor aircraft collection beside Davis-Monthan AFB. Bus tours of the AMARG "boneyard" run separately; check ID rules.

Foothills: Sabino Canyon and Mount Lemmon

Sabino Canyon Recreation Area is a Coronado National Forest canyon with a narrated shuttle tram, creek pools after winter rain and many trails. There is a day-use fee, and shuttle tickets are separate. It is right by the Ventana Canyon courses and Arizona National.

Mount Lemmon and Summerhaven. The Catalina Highway climbs about 27 miles from desert to pine forest at Summerhaven, much cooler than town, and the summit is about 9,100 ft. In winter, check chain and road restrictions; snow is common on Mount Lemmon in January. A fee applies for stops along the highway. Our Mount Lemmon day trip guide has the full plan, and it is the summer escape in our Tucson summer golf guide.

North: Tohono Chul and Catalina State Park

Tohono Chul is a botanical garden, galleries and tearoom in a desert preserve on Ina Road, an easy morning near Oro Valley and the northwest courses. Catalina State Park has trails and picnic areas at the base of Pusch Ridge, including Romero Canyon and the Sutherland Trail, good for an off-day hike from Oro Valley or SaddleBrooke. Park entry fee applies. See our Oro Valley golf guide.

South: San Xavier, Titan Missile Museum and Madera Canyon

Mission San Xavier del Bac, the "White Dove of the Desert", is a Spanish colonial mission church completed in the 1790s and still an active parish on the San Xavier District of the Tohono O'odham Nation. Entry is free; respect services. Fry bread stands set up outside.

Titan Missile Museum is a preserved Titan II ICBM silo with guided tours underground, minutes from Green Valley off I-19. Reserve tours in season.

Madera Canyon, in the Santa Rita Mountains, is famous for birding, with hummingbirds and elegant trogon in season, and holds the trailheads for Mount Wrightson. It is about 30-40 minutes from Green Valley; day-use fee. Our Green Valley golf guide covers the courses nearby.

Tubac and Tumacacori. Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, Arizona's first state park, sits next to Tubac's arts-and-crafts village, and Tumacacori National Historical Park is about 15 minutes south. Our Tubac day trip guide covers the route and golf on the way.

Matching off-days to the season

The outdoor sights follow the same calendar as golf. From November to April, mid-day is the best time for the Desert Museum, Saguaro and Sabino Canyon, and early mornings in Oro Valley and Green Valley can be cold. In summer, flip it: golf at dawn, then head up Mount Lemmon or indoors to a museum, since June highs average about 101F. During the July and August monsoon, afternoon storms can flood washes quickly, so keep canyon hikes to the morning.

Rainy-day things to do in Tucson

Tucson averages about 4 rain days in each of December, January and February, so a wet day is possible in winter.

  • Arizona State Museum (UA campus): Southwest Native cultures and a huge pottery collection.
  • Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium (UA campus): planetarium shows and a mineral museum.
  • Arizona History Museum (University area): territorial and mining history.
  • Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block (downtown): Latin American, western and contemporary collections plus historic adobe houses, next to El Charro for lunch.
  • The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures: miniatures and dollhouses, popular with visiting grandkids.
  • Tucson Mall on Oracle Road, the largest enclosed mall in the area, and Desert Diamond Casino Sahuarita off I-19 with restaurants.

Farther afield

Kitt Peak National Observatory is about 1.5 hours southwest on the Tohono O'odham Nation, with a visitor centre, daytime tours and reservation-only night programs; check current tour availability.

Nogales, Sonora. The usual day trip is to park on the Arizona side near the DeConcini port and walk across for pharmacies, dentists and lunch. Read the current advisory first: the US State Department rates Sonora Level 3 (reconsider travel), and on September 5, 2026 the US Consulate General in Nogales restricted US government personnel to essential movement during daylight hours, advising US citizens to follow the same restrictions. Whether that restriction is still in force was not confirmed. US citizens need a passport, passport card, NEXUS, SENTRI or enhanced licence to return; Canadians need a passport or NEXUS and should keep their I-94.
