Guide emblem: Tucson summer golf: heat, monsoon storms, dawn tee times and the cheapest rates

Tucson summer golf is cheap, hot and early. Highs run about 101F in June and 100F in July, the monsoon brings afternoon lightning from mid-June to September, and courses drop to their lowest rates of the year. Summer 2026 deals ran from about $19 with a cart. Book the first tee time and finish by late morning.

Most visitors and snowbirds are long gone by June. That leaves locals, summer residents and travellers who do not mind a 6 AM start. If you can play early and carry plenty of water, it is the cheapest golf the area offers. Here is how the summer splits into two different seasons and what it costs.

Quick facts

  • Hottest month: June, 101.2F average high, very dry (0.23 in).
  • Wettest month: July, 2.21 in over about 8.8 rain days, with 76F nights.
  • Monsoon: June 15 to September 30 (National Weather Service); most storms in July and August.
  • Rates: the lowest of the year at most courses, starting in May.
  • Lowest deal seen: Torres Blancas, $18.99-$24.99 for 18 with a cart (GolfNow, September 2026).
  • Cool-off: Mount Lemmon, summit about 9,100 ft.
  • Fall overseed: closures begin mid-to-late September.

Two summers: dry heat, then monsoon

Tucson summer golf comes in two parts. May and June are dry heat with very low humidity. July through September is the monsoon: higher humidity, muggy nights and afternoon thunderstorms.

September95.1F70.4F1.32 in4.4Monsoon winds down; overseed starts

NOAA 1991-2020 normals, Tucson International Airport. Green Valley and the Oro Valley edge run about 1-2F cooler in the afternoon and several degrees cooler at night, but they get heavier monsoon storms: Green Valley's July normal is 2.86 inches against 2.21 at the airport.

June is the one to watch for heat. It is the hottest month by normal high and almost rainless. The air is very dry, so you dehydrate faster than you notice. Play the first tee time, carry more water than you think you need and finish before noon.

July and August bring the monsoon. Storms usually build in the afternoon, with lightning, dust storms and flash floods in washes. Expect lightning suspensions on afternoon rounds, and do not drive through flooded dip crossings. Morning rounds usually get finished.

September cools into the mid-90s and the monsoon season officially ends on September 30. From mid-to-late September, courses start overseeding, so check each course before booking a late-September round.

Summer is when the deals show up. These are prices we saw for summer 2026, mostly prepaid GolfNow Hot Deals or third-party listings, so treat them as examples of the range, not rack rates. Rates change daily on dynamic-pricing courses.

How to play Tucson golf in summer

  1. Book the first tee time. Golf in June is a dawn activity. On a 101F day you want to be on the back nine before 9 AM.
  2. Carry water and ice. The dry heat of May and June dries you out fast.
  3. Watch the sky after lunch in July and August. Storms build in the afternoon. Lightning suspends play, and washes flood quickly.
  4. Check for aeration. Early summer brings short aeration closures. In 2026, Dell Urich aerated on June 2 and Randolph North on June 11, and Tubac closed its range May 19-21 and short-game greens May 21-22.
  5. Check overseed dates in September. Sewailo was closed September 14 to October 1, 2026 and cart-path-only through October 23. El Rio and Silverbell were closed September 15 to October 3 in 2025. The Sewailo course guide has its 2026 dates. Our Tucson golf overseed guide lists every course.
  6. Expect dormant patches. Spring transition, as the winter rye dies back, comes around May and June.

Summer stays

Summer is also cheap for longer stays. Rincon Country West RV Resort lists standard sites from $78 a day, $427 a week or $1,293 a month in summer, and park model rentals at $1,400 a month from May to September (2026-27 card, seen October 2026; monthly is plus electric). An Oro Valley furnished monthly home listing quoted about $3,250 a month from April to October against $4,250 in winter. Our guide to where to stay in Tucson for golf compares the areas.

Who summer golf suits

Summer golf in Tucson suits early risers on a budget, summer residents and anyone who wants a quiet tee sheet. It suits less well golfers who like a late-morning start or a long lunch on the patio: by early afternoon in June, the temperature is near its 101F normal high, and by July the storms are building. Families visiting in summer can split the day, with dawn golf for one group and the pool or a museum for the other.

Mount Lemmon: the cool-off

When town is over 100F, locals drive up. The Catalina Highway climbs about 27 miles from the desert to pine forest at Summerhaven, and the Mount Lemmon summit is about 9,100 ft. A fee applies for stops along the highway in the Coronado National Forest. In early summer, fire restrictions can close parts of the Santa Catalinas and Santa Ritas, so check before you go. Our Mount Lemmon day trip guide has the plan.
