Tucson golf overseed: fall closures, course by course, and where to play meanwhile

Tucson golf overseed runs from mid-to-late September into October. Most desert courses close for one to three weeks to plant ryegrass over their bermuda, then play cart-path-only while it grows in. By November they are green. Courses stagger the work, so something is always open, but few publish their dates.

October is otherwise a fine month in Tucson, with a normal high of 86.3F and almost no rain. This guide lists what each course did in fall 2025 and 2026, which ones kept taking tee times in late October 2026, and how to plan a fall trip around it.

How Tucson golf overseed works

Tucson's courses are mostly bermudagrass, which goes dormant and tan in winter. In fall they overseed with ryegrass (greens often with Poa trivialis or rye) so the course plays green from November to April. The work starts once the summer heat breaks, usually in mid-to-late September, and runs into October.

During overseed, expect any of these: a full closure, temporary greens, cart-path-only rules and reduced overseed rates. Multi-course resorts usually stagger their courses so one stays open. Some courses skip the fairways and play dormant bermuda all winter. That is general guidance for the area; the course list below is what we could confirm.

Tucson golf overseed dates by course

No 2026 overseed dates were published for Starr Pass, Torres Blancas, Canoa Ranch, San Ignacio, Haven or Tubac Golf Resort. Sewailo's dates also differed on another club page (September 13 to October 4), so even published dates move.

The city courses split the work

The five city courses do not all overseed at once. City minutes from July 2024 put Dell Urich and Fred Enke in a September group and Randolph North in an October group. In 2025, El Rio and Silverbell closed together from September 15 to October 3. That means at least one city course has usually been open through the fall, and the Randolph complex has two courses on one site that overseed in different months. No fall 2026 dates were published for the city courses when we checked. Avoid early June too, when Randolph closed for aeration on June 11, 2026.

Where to play during overseed

In late October 2026, the safest bets were:

• Crooked Tree in the northwest, which kept taking times through overseed with an Over-Seeding Alert on its listings. Times on October 27 ran $42.95 to $63.17. Expect fresh rye and possible restrictions.
• El Conquistador's Conquistador Course in Oro Valley, which was taking times on October 27 at $46.69 to $85.79, while its sister Cañada course was not.
• Sewailo, which reopened October 1 and came off cart-path-only on October 23, 2026.
• Quarry Pines in Marana, which had a $34.99 time with cart on October 20, 2026.
• Haven in Green Valley, with a $44.99 time for October 18, 2026.

A course with no times on a fall date may be closed. Call before you drive.

Tubac's longer fall closure

Tubac Golf Resort is a special case this year. Its Anza nine is closed from October 2026 to about January 2027 while its greens are rebuilt to Dominator bentgrass, with holes 6 and 8 rebuilt with new drainage. Otero and Rancho, rebuilt in 2023 and 2024, stay open, so everyone plays that 18 this fall and the tee sheet will be busier.

Planning a fall trip around Tucson golf overseed

1. Late September to mid-October is the risk window. If your dates are fixed, check each course's tee sheet a week out.
2. Late October is better; November is best. November averages a 75.1F high with fresh rye on overseeded courses. See Tucson golf in November.
3. Mix courses that overseed at different times. In the city, pair Randolph North with Dell Urich.
4. Ask about overseed rates. Restricted conditions sometimes come with a discount.
5. Expect rates to climb right after. San Ignacio's late-October 2026 rates were more than double its September deals. Our Tucson golf rates guide has the numbers.

Questions to ask the pro shop

When you call a course in September or October, five questions cover it:

1. Is the course closed for overseed on my date, and when does it reopen?
2. Are the greens temporary, or the regular greens?
3. Is it cart-path-only, and until when?
4. Is there a reduced overseed rate?
5. Can I post a score for handicap? Sewailo did not allow it during its 2026 overseed period.

The answers change year to year, and even a club's own pages can disagree, as Sewailo's did in 2026.

What grass you will play on

Overseed changes the fairways more than anything else, but greens vary too:

• City courses (Randolph North, Dell Urich, El Rio, Silverbell, Fred Enke): bermuda fairways overseeded with rye. Fred Enke has grass only on tees, landing areas and greens.
• Starr Pass: new TifEagle bermuda greens on all three nines, bermuda fairways.
• Omni Tucson National: Champion Bermuda greens and Tifway 419 bermuda fairways.
• Canoa Ranch: bentgrass greens with bermuda fairways and tees.
• Tubac: Dominator bentgrass greens on Otero and Rancho, and on Anza from about January 2027.

Snowbirds arriving during overseed

Snowbirds start arriving late in October, which is the tail of the overseed window. If you arrive then, expect cart-path-only days and fresh rye for the first week or two. By November, conditions are green and rates step up toward peak. Our Tucson winter golf guide covers the season.

Spring transition
