Contour art: Yuma golf overseed: which courses close in the fall and which stay open

Yuma golf overseed season runs from late September to late October. Most courses close for a few weeks to seed ryegrass over their dormant bermuda, some keep one nine open while the other grows in, and they reopen on fresh rye through the second half of October. Mesa del Sol does not overseed and stays open all fall.

This guide to Yuma golf overseed lists every course's 2026 closure from the Arizona Golf Association list and the courses' own notices, the 2024 schedule for comparison, and how to plan an October trip. Dates were checked on October 23, 2026. Several courses published no dates, so call before you go.

Quick facts

  • Window: late September to late October.
  • Stays open: Mesa del Sol (no overseed in 2026).
  • One nine open: Las Barrancas kept a nine open for most of its 2026 overseed.
  • Reopened: Foothills Par 3 on Oct 9, 2026; Las Barrancas on full 18 from Oct 24.
  • Unknown in 2026: Desert Hills, Arroyo Dunes, Yuma G&CC, Cocopah Bend, Coyote Wash, Butterfield.

Why Yuma courses overseed

Yuma's courses are bermudagrass. Bermuda goes dormant and brown in the cool months, so most courses seed ryegrass over it each fall to stay green from about late October to May. The course closes for a few weeks while the seed takes, and often reopens cart-path-only or with limited play. The Yuma Sun put the cost of seeding one course at $100,000 to $200,000.

The front and back nines at Las Barrancas overlapped only on Oct 2-3, so one nine was open for most of its closure. The Foothills Executive conflict is real: the AGA list says closed Oct 16-30, while its own tee sheet was selling $35 nine-hole times for Oct 24-30. It may have reopened early or be playing on temporary conditions, so phone 928-305-6252. Westwind's par-3 course: status unclear, call first.

How 2026 compares with the 2024 schedule

The 2024 Yuma Sun roundup is the last full published schedule, so it is the best guide to courses that did not post 2026 dates. Where both years are known, the Yuma golf overseed calendar shifted a little:

  • Las Barrancas started earlier in 2026 (front nine from Sep 17, against Sep 30 in 2024) and had all 18 back on sale from Oct 24, three days earlier than 2024's Oct 27.
  • Foothills Par 3 was almost identical: back on Oct 9, 2026 against Oct 8, 2024.
  • Foothills Executive moved later: the AGA list put its 2026 closure at Oct 16-30, while in 2024 it reopened on Oct 8.
  • Mesa del Sol did not close in either year.

For Desert Hills, Coyote Wash, Cocopah Bend and Yuma G&CC, the 2024 pattern (closing around Sep 30 or early October and reopening between Oct 21 and Oct 27) is the only guide, and it is not a promise for 2026.

NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Yuma airfield. Highs fall from about 101F in September to about 78F in November, so late-October reopenings land in pleasant golf weather. The rest of the year is in Yuma weather by month.

Which Yuma courses stay open in October

Mesa del Sol is the one to count on during Yuma golf overseed season. The AGA 2026 list shows it as not overseeding, its online sheet had public times for Oct 24 to Nov 6, 2026, and late-October rates with a cart were $55 in the morning down to $35 from 2 PM on weekdays. The trade-off: without rye, its bermuda may look thinner and partly dormant in mid-winter (not confirmed). The Mesa del Sol course guide has the details.

Las Barrancas keeps one nine open through most of its overseed, and the nine-hole rate is $35. The Las Barrancas course guide covers the layout.

Foothills Par 3 was back by Oct 9, 2026, at $20 for nine with a range and night golf.

How to plan an October golf trip to Yuma

October highs average about 90F and lows about 66F, so mornings are pleasant and afternoons still warm.

  • Early October (1-15): plan around Mesa del Sol, the open nine at Las Barrancas (both nines were shut on Oct 2-3 in 2026), Foothills Executive, whose listed closure did not start until Oct 16, and, after Oct 9, the Foothills Par 3. Expect most other courses to be closed.
  • Mid October (16-23): Mesa del Sol, the Las Barrancas front nine (its back nine was closed until Oct 23 in 2026) and the Foothills Par 3; Foothills Executive was listed as closed from Oct 16.
  • Late October (24-31): Las Barrancas is back on 18 holes and others start reopening on new rye, often cart-path-only at first. Call each course.
  • Base in the Foothills. Mesa del Sol, Las Barrancas and the Foothills courses are minutes apart, while Desert Hills, Yuma G&CC and Cocopah Bend in town were the least certain in 2026. Our guide to Fortuna Foothills golf covers the area.

If you can move your dates away from the Yuma golf overseed window, November is the safer bet: the rye is new, highs average about 78F and most courses are on full 18. See Yuma golf in November.

Checking a course before you go

Overseed dates move from year to year, and several Yuma courses never publish them. Before you book an October round:

  • Look at the course's online tee sheet for your date. An empty sheet for a whole week, as at Desert Hills and Coyote Wash in late October 2026, can mean a closure or a booking pause.
  • Phone the pro shop and ask three things: is it 18 holes or nine, is it cart-path-only, and when do they expect full play.
  • Check the Arizona Golf Association list at azgolf.org for the year's dates.

Once courses are back on 18 holes, each one opens its tee sheet on its own schedule; Yuma tee times in winter lists every booking window.

After the overseed

Fresh rye needs a little time. Expect overseed conditions at Desert Hills in early November, and Cocopah Bend reviews of conditions are mixed, so ask about turf before booking the first week of November there. The Desert Hills course guide covers the city course's seasons. Winter rates start soon after: Las Barrancas counts October 1 as the start of its season, and Desert Hills moves to its highest table in January. See Yuma golf rates for the full list and the best time to golf in Yuma for the month-by-month picture.

To see how other desert golf towns handle it, compare Mesquite's September overseed and the St. George overseed schedule if you are planning a fall trip across several towns. Snowbirds arriving in October should also read Yuma winter golf.

Plan it on the map

The Yuma golf map marks each course's overseed closure, so you can see what is open on your dates before you book. The $30 plan builds an October or November trip around the courses that are actually playing, or a whole winter stay that starts on fresh rye.

Questions golfers ask

When do Yuma golf courses overseed?

Between late September and late October. Courses close in turn for a few weeks, and some run nine holes while the other nine grows in. In 2026 the Arizona Golf Association list had Las Barrancas closing its nines between Sep 17 and Oct 23 and the Foothills Par 3 from Sep 25 to Oct 9.

Which Yuma golf course does not close for overseed?

Mesa del Sol. The Arizona Golf Association 2026 list shows it as not overseeding, and the Yuma Sun's 2024 roundup said it does not close for seeding. That makes it the safest full 18 to book in October.

When does Desert Hills reopen after overseed?

The 2026 date was not published. On October 23, 2026 there were no online times through Oct 31, and the booking engine asked golfers to call the pro shop at 928-373-5220. In 2024 it closed Sep 30 and reopened about Oct 25.

Why do Yuma golf courses overseed?

Yuma's courses are bermudagrass, which goes dormant and brown in the cool months. Overseeding with ryegrass keeps them green from about late October to May. The Yuma Sun put the cost at $100,000 to $200,000 per course.

Is October a good month for a Yuma golf trip?

The first three weeks are limited: most courses are closed or on nine holes, and highs still average about 90F. From late October, courses reopen on new rye, sometimes cart-path-only at first. For a sure thing, book Mesa del Sol or go in November.

Are Yuma courses cart-path-only after overseed?

Often, for a short time. Courses typically reopen cart-path-only or with limited play while the new rye establishes, so ask the pro shop when you book a late-October or early-November round.

Where can I find the official Yuma overseed dates?

The Arizona Golf Association publishes a yearly overseeding list at azgolf.org, and individual courses post notices on their sites. For 2026 several Yuma courses, including Desert Hills, Cocopah Bend and the Wellton courses, said to contact the course.
