The best things to do in Mesquite NV besides golf are the day trips: Valley of Fire State Park (about 1 hour 10 minutes, $15 per non-Nevada car), Zion Canyon (about 1 hour 28 minutes) and the Virgin River Gorge. In town, the CasaBlanca Spa, the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum, the recreation center and three casino resorts fill a slow afternoon.
Fees and hours below were read in October 2026, mostly from official pages. Drive times are Google Maps where we have them and OSRM router estimates otherwise; OSRM tends to be slower than real I-15 driving.

Valley of Fire: the classic rest day
Valley of Fire is the closest of the big red-rock parks and the easiest rest day on a Mesquite golf trip. Google gives 1 hour 10 minutes and 57.3 miles to the visitor center; OSRM routes a different way, 64.3 miles and 80 minutes.
- Entry: $15 per non-Nevada vehicle, $10 per Nevada vehicle, day use.
- Hours: the park is open daily from sunrise to sunset; the visitor center is open 9 AM to 4 PM.
- Closures: the park closes completely from December 1 to 14 every year for maintenance, and many trails close from May 15 to September 30 because of heat.
- Construction: through the end of 2026 the West Entrance is closed Monday to Thursday (per the state notice; one TV report said Monday to Friday) for a new entrance lane. It does not affect you coming from Mesquite, since you use the East Entrance via SR-169.
Overton is the back door to the East Entrance, so it pairs well with the Lost City Museum (721 S Moapa Valley Blvd). The museum's own site lists Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with $8 adult admission (17 and under free), but a state directory says Wednesday to Sunday, so call 702-397-2193 first. The Overton Arm of Lake Mead is in the same direction; the recreation area charges $25 per vehicle for 7 days, and the $100 non-resident surcharge does not apply there.
Zion National Park from Mesquite
Zion Canyon is about 1 hour 28 minutes and 85 miles up I-15 (OSRM says 106 minutes). Entry is $35 per private vehicle for 7 days, $30 per motorcycle, or $20 per person on foot or bike. The Zion annual pass is $70; the America the Beautiful pass is $80 for US residents and $250 for non-residents.
The big change for 2026: since January 1, non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra $100 per person at Zion on top of the entrance fee unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass. That includes Canadian snowbirds who are not US residents. A car of four Canadian adults pays $435 for the day without a qualifying pass.
Zion is on Mountain time, one hour ahead of Mesquite. The shuttle and Scenic Drive rules change through the season, so the full plan is in Zion National Park and a Mesquite golf trip. Kolob Canyons, at I-15 Exit 40 about 17 miles south of Cedar City, is the quieter alternative: a five-mile scenic drive, about 78 minutes from Mesquite by OSRM, no shuttle needed, and every visitor stops at the visitor center to pay or show a pass.
The Virgin River Gorge and the Arizona Strip
I-15 runs through the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona between Littlefield and the Utah line. If you drive in from St. George or Salt Lake City, you have already seen it: a narrow, winding canyon with tight curves, trucks and frequent bridge or lane work, so drive it in daylight and check az511.gov for current work.
The BLM's Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area sits at the Cedar Pocket exit (I-15 mile post 18), about 20 miles northeast of Mesquite, with hiking, river access and a campground. Day use is $2 per vehicle; camping is $8 a site per night with a 14-night limit, and 25 sites are reservable on recreation.gov. It is on Arizona time, one hour ahead of Mesquite in winter.
Snow Canyon and St. George
Snow Canyon State Park in Ivins, Utah is 49 minutes from Mesquite on Google (OSRM: 47.6 miles, 60 minutes). Day use is $20 per vehicle for non-Utah residents and $15 for Utah residents (up to 8 people), or $3 per person on foot or bike, and the park is open 6 AM to 10 PM. It is on Mountain time. St. George itself is about 40 to 45 minutes up I-15; the St. George golf map and the guide to Ivins and Snow Canyon golf cover that side if the rest day turns into a round.
In town: museum, rec center, spa and casinos
Virgin Valley Heritage Museum. The city museum at 35 W Mesquite Blvd covers the pioneer settlers of the Virgin Valley. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM; closed Sunday and Monday. Local sources describe admission as free. Phone 702-346-5295.
Mesquite Recreation Center. 100 W Old Mill Rd, (702) 346-8732. Two full-size gyms, two racquetball courts, indoor and outdoor heated pools, a fitness room and pickleball open gym. City newsletters from 2022 to 2025 listed a daily pass at $6 for adults and $3 for seniors, but the current price is not published. Closed Sundays.
CasaBlanca Spa. At CasaBlanca Resort, open 9 AM to 6 PM daily. The $35 day pass covers the spa, heated pool, eucalyptus steam room, relaxation room and fitness room.
Casinos. CasaBlanca has about 22 tables, 850 slots and a sportsbook. Eureka Casino Resort has nearly 1,000 slots, live tables and a sportsbook. Virgin River Casino & Lodge adds bingo, a bowling center and a 75-game arcade, which makes it the best wet-weather option for a group.
Mesquite Sports and Events Complex. Five lit soccer fields at 1635 World Champion Way. It is an events venue rather than a drop-in attraction, but it hosted World Long Drive competitions in 2025 (no 2026 or 2027 Mesquite dates were found).
Events worth planning around
Some of the best things to do in Mesquite, NV happen only on certain weekends:
- Mesquite Hot Air Balloon Festival: a free late-January weekend at CasaBlanca with morning launches (2026: Jan 23 to 25). The 2027 dates were not published when checked.
- Mesquite Days: the town's main festival in late April and early May (2026: Apr 29 to May 2), with a parade, carnival and pancake breakfast. Mesquite Blvd closes on parade morning.
- Nevada Open: early November at CasaBlanca and Palms, free to spectators. In 2026 the tee sheets showed no public times from Nov 3 to 7.
Rest-day plans that work
1. Valley of Fire morning. Leave Mesquite by 8 AM to reach the visitor center around its 9 AM opening. Spend the morning in the park, then drive back through Overton for the Lost City Museum if it is open that day. Back in time for a spa session or a late lunch. Not from December 1 to 14.
2. Zion day. Leave early, because Zion runs on Mountain time, an hour ahead of Mesquite all year. Full timings in the Zion guide.
3. Slow day in town. Breakfast at Fat Dough (opens 6 AM), the heritage museum when it opens at 10 (Tuesday to Saturday), an afternoon on the CasaBlanca spa pass, and dinner at Gregory's (Wednesday to Sunday) or Katherine's. Restaurant picks are in where to eat in Mesquite.
4. Half a rest day. If you cannot sit still, play nine. Coyote Willows is a $50 nine by the river (see the Coyote Willows course page), and CasaBlanca Golf Club is 3 minutes from the resort if you want a twilight round instead (CasaBlanca course guide). On the drive back to Las Vegas, Coyote Springs is about an hour southwest and turns a travel day into a golf day.
When is the best time for a rest day?
Spring and fall, for the same reason they are the best golf months. In summer, normal highs reach about 104F in June and 109F in July near Mesquite, and Valley of Fire closes many trails from May 15. In December, the park's two-week closure and Zion's shuttle gap (no service from November 29 to December 25) change the plan; see Thanksgiving and Christmas golf in Mesquite. Long-stay visitors have more rest days than anyone, so the Canadian snowbird golf guide and the 7-day Mesquite golf itinerary build these days in. For a quieter trip for two, see the couples golf trip guide.
