Scorecard: Canadian Snowbird Golf Mesquite Guide: Stay Rules, Insurance, Winter Rates and Monthly Stays

Canadian snowbird golf in Mesquite means mild, dry winters, green overseeded fairways and morning green fees of about $109 to $155 at most courses for winter 2026-27 (seen October 2026). The rules to know before you go: Canadian visitors can usually stay in the US for 6 months, and anyone staying 30 days or longer must be registered.

This guide is for Canadians spending a month or a whole winter in Mesquite, Nevada. It is general information drawn from official sources, not legal, immigration or tax advice. For the golf season itself, see our Mesquite snowbird golf guide.

Quick facts

  • Stay limit: usually 6 months without a visa (Government of Canada travel advice, updated October 15, 2026).
  • Registration: required for stays of 30 days or longer; drivers entering by land are the ones most likely to need Form G-325R.
  • Money: prices in Mesquite are in US dollars, so check the current CAD/USD rate when budgeting.
  • Clock: Mesquite is on Pacific Time, two hours behind Calgary and Edmonton from Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 14, 2027 and one hour behind from Mar 14, 2027.
  • Winter golf: $109 to $155 for most morning rounds; Wolf Creek's 2026-27 winter rate not posted.
  • Long stays: RV parks, villas and vacation rentals, but no 2026-27 monthly rates were published.

How long can Canadians stay in the US as snowbirds?

The Government of Canada's US travel advice says Canadian visitors can usually stay in the United States for 6 months without a visa, and must apply to USCIS before that time runs out to stay longer.

It also warns that a border officer who suspects you spend more time in the US than in Canada can require you to prove you are a temporary visitor, not a US resident.

You will hear "182 days" a lot in snowbird circles. That figure is shorthand for the roughly six-month limit; the exact count is set by US immigration at entry, not by a fixed day number on the Canadian government page. If your plans are close to the limit, read the travel.gc.ca page yourself before you book a long rental.

Do Canadian snowbirds need to register in the US?

This is the rule that catches drivers. Canadians and other foreign nationals staying in the United States for 30 days or longer must be registered with the US government, and travel.gc.ca warns that failing to comply can bring penalties, fines and misdemeanor prosecution.

What USCIS says about who is already registered:

  • Flying in: people issued a Form I-94 (paper or electronic) are already registered. That is normally the case for air arrivals.
  • Driving in: USCIS specifically lists Canadian visitors who entered at land ports and were not issued registration evidence as not registered. They register online with Form G-325R through a USCIS online account, and Canadian visitors do not need a biometrics appointment.

Alberta snowbirds who drive down come through the Coutts, Alberta and Sweetgrass, Montana crossing on I-15, so this applies directly to anyone who drives in and stays more than a month.

US tax days: the substantial presence test

The IRS uses the substantial presence test to decide who is treated as a US resident for tax. It is met if you are in the US at least 31 days in the current year and 183 days over three years, counting all days this year, one-third of last year's days and one-sixth of the days from the year before.

A snowbird who spends about four months a year in the US every year works out to 120 + 40 + 20 = 180 days, just under 183. Longer stays can cross it.

Someone who meets the test can still be treated as a nonresident under the closer connection exception if they were in the US fewer than 183 days in the current year, kept a tax home in Canada all year and have a closer connection to Canada, by filing IRS Form 8840 by the tax return due date. This is general information, not tax advice; check with a cross-border tax adviser.

Travel medical insurance for a winter in Mesquite

The Government of Canada advises getting travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and hospital stays for the United States, and says foreign visitors without travel health insurance pay out of pocket for treatment. Provincial and territorial plans may pay little or nothing for care abroad, and never up front.

For Albertans, Alberta Health Care (AHCIP) reimburses only insured emergency physician and hospital services outside Canada, at Alberta rates: hospital inpatient care at CA$100 a day and outpatient care at CA$50 a day. Alberta strongly recommends travel medical insurance. How long you can be away and keep provincial coverage was not checked for this guide, so confirm that with your province before a long stay.

Canadian snowbird golf: Mesquite winter rates by course

All prices were seen in October 2026, in US dollars, and change often. Most 2027 peak prices were not posted yet.

Coyote Springs$119 Mon-Thu, $130 Fri/Sun, $137 SatNot loaded yetAbout 90 days loaded
Coyote Willows$50 for 9 (fall); winter not loadedNot loaded yet30 days

Two things matter more than the rate for a whole season. First, you cannot book a winter in one go: windows run 30 to 120 days, so set reminders and book each date as it opens, especially for March. Second, winter mornings start late. Normal lows are about 32 to 33F in December and January, so frost can hold the first tee times; Conestoga's 2026 rate sheet shows 10 AM shotgun starts from Nov 22 to Dec 31.

For course detail, the Oasis course guide and Conestoga course guide cover tees and booking rules, and cheap golf in Mesquite covers the twilight and nine-hole options that stretch a season budget.

Resident rates: what a Canadian can and can't get

Canadian snowbirds often ask about local rates. Mesquite courses publish these:

  • Oasis: resident rates for verified Clark County, Nevada and Washington County, Utah residents, booked within 30 days, with proof checked at the shop. Masters Villas guests also qualify. Amounts are not published (702-346-7820).
  • Coyote Springs: resident pricing requires a valid Nevada driver's license or state ID, or a Washington County, Utah driver's license. Bills and leases are not accepted. The Coyote Club ($159 for 12 months) is for Nevada and Washington County residents.
  • Conestoga: resident rates of $105 to $115 ($60 in summer) are for Sun City Mesquite residents only.
  • Falcon Ridge: a resident discount is applied at check-in for bookings within 30 days; the amount and proof required are not published.
  • Coyote Willows: sells an annual golf pass with reduced rates; ask the pro shop for the price.

So a rental lease alone will not get you the Coyote Springs rate, and Oasis wants proof of residency. Staying at Masters Villas is the one published route to the Oasis resident rate for a visitor.

Where Canadian snowbirds stay for a month or more

A Canadian snowbird golf season in Mesquite needs somewhere to stay for weeks, not nights. No 2026-27 monthly rates were published by any of these, so call before you commit.

A few details for long stays. At Masters Villas, full weeks are prioritized for owners and stays shorter than a week open only 90 days out. Mesquite Vacation Rentals' complimentary activities program, which the operator says includes some golf, applies to stays under 27 days, so a full-month booking may not get it. CasaBlanca RV Park guests can use the resort's pool, casino, restaurants and spa, which has a $35 day pass.

Getting there from Canada

From Alberta, Canadian snowbird golf trips to Mesquite start with a flight or a long drive. Google Flights lists WestJet nonstops from Calgary to Las Vegas (fastest 2 hr 55 min) and from Edmonton (3 hr 9 min, six days a week), and Porter says its new Edmonton to Las Vegas route starts November 16, 2026. Las Vegas Harry Reid (LAS) is about 90 miles from Mesquite.

Driving, Google Maps gives 17 hr 38 min and 1,928 km from Calgary and 20 hr 29 min and 2,260 km from Edmonton, all on I-15 south of the Coutts/Sweetgrass crossing. CBP lists Sweetgrass as open 24 hours a day. Winter conditions in Montana and Idaho can close or slow I-15. The full breakdown is in our Calgary to Mesquite golf trip guide.

Clocks: Alberta, Mesquite and Arizona

Mesquite is on Pacific Time. Daylight time ends Nov 1, 2026 and starts again Mar 14, 2027 in Nevada and Utah, but Alberta stops changing its clocks on Nov 1, 2026 and stays on UTC-6 all year. So from Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 14, 2027 Mesquite is two hours behind Calgary and Edmonton, and St. George, Utah is one hour behind them. From Mar 14, 2027 Mesquite is one hour behind Alberta, and St. George keeps the same time as Alberta.

Arizona does not change its clocks. From Nov 1 to Mar 14, Littlefield and Beaver Dam, home to Palms Golf Club and Desert Skies RV, are one hour ahead of Mesquite, which covers most of a snowbird winter. One published note says the Palms tee sheet runs on Mesquite (Pacific) time, but that is not confirmed for winter, so ask when you book. More in Mesquite time zone for golfers.

Rest days for a long winter

  • Valley of Fire State Park: about 1 hr 10 min by Google Maps. $15 per non-Nevada vehicle. Closed to all visitors Dec 1 to 14 every year.
  • Zion National Park: about 1 hr 28 min to the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. $35 per vehicle, and since January 1, 2026, non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra $100 per person unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass. That applies to Canadian visitors who are not US residents.
  • Lake Mead National Recreation Area: $25 per vehicle for 7 days, with no non-resident surcharge.
  • Mesquite Recreation Center: indoor and outdoor heated pools, gyms and pickleball open gym; closed Sundays.

The things to do in Mesquite NV guide has hours and drive times for all of these.
