Course elevations: Temecula winter golf for snowbirds: how a one- to four-month stay works

Temecula winter golf means highs around 67F, lows in the mid-40s and the wettest weather of the year, spread over 5 to 6 rain days a month. It is cooler and wetter than Palm Springs or Phoenix and warmer than Las Vegas. Snowbirds come for lower fees, quiet wine country and a spread of courses within about 50 minutes.

This guide explains how a one- to four-month winter stay works here: the weather by month, where to base, a rotation and what to do when it rains. Normals come from the Fallbrook station, which is cooler in summer than the valley floor. Prices were seen in November 2026 and change.

Quick facts

  • Snowbird season: about November to March.
  • Winter highs and lows: about 67F and 46 to 47F (Fallbrook station).
  • Wettest months: December to February, with 2.6 to 3.7 inches and 5 to 6 rain days each.
  • Daylight: 9 hours 57 minutes on December 15, with sunset at 4:42pm.
  • Bases: furnished rentals, Sun City Menifee 55+ homes, and RV parks.
  • Winter rates: green fees step down from the fall peak.

What is the weather like for Temecula winter golf?

Winter normals at the Fallbrook 5 NE station, 1991-2020:

Month High Low Rain Rain days Sunset (15th) Daylight
November74.3F51.9F1.15 in4.64:46pm10h26
December67.1F46.1F2.64 in6.54:42pm9h57

February66.7F46.4F3.74 in6.45:33pm11h00
March70.1F47.9F2.02 in6.36:56pm11h57

Fallbrook is closer to the coast and higher than the Temecula valley floor. Treat it as a guide, not a forecast for the course you are playing. Low-lying inland courses are colder at dawn than the table suggests, and valley fog and frost can delay first tee times even though the station recorded almost no freezing nights. Our Temecula weather by month guide goes deeper.

Santa Ana winds, which are hot, dry and gusty, are most common from September through December and can close courses or bring smoke.

Where do snowbirds stay for Temecula winter golf?

There are four realistic bases, each with a catch.

A furnished house. Furnished 3- and 4-bedroom houses ran about $4,000 to $6,500 a month in listings seen. Good for a group sharing; one listing is capped at about three months. See Temecula snowbird rentals and the furnished rentals record on the map.

Sun City Menifee. 55+ homes at $1,750 to $2,495, mostly 12-month unfurnished leases. A winter stay needs a snowbird-friendly owner. Sun City Menifee rentals are 4 minutes from the North Golf Course.

An RV park. Pechanga RV Resort lists a 29-night Premium package at $2,012, about $69 a night, and is 2 minutes from Journey at Pechanga. See Temecula RV parks for golf. Hemet parks suit the Hemet and San Jacinto side.

Extended-stay hotels. Residence Inn Temecula Murrieta has suites useful for longer stays, but rates were not captured.

Short-term rental rules were not researched for the area. Many HOAs and 55+ communities restrict rentals under 30 days, so treat 30 nights or more as the norm.

Which courses make a good winter rotation?

A rotation mixes price and drive time. Here are the value courses that are open to visitors:

Course Fee seen Drive from Old Town
Legends at Temeku Hills$48.99 to $73.99 with cart (prepaid)8 min
California Oaks$40 weekday, $53 weekend13 min
Redhawkprepaid $26 to $88 (Sep-Oct 2026)10 min
Hemet Golf Club$49 weekday, $59 weekend with cart33 min
Soboba Springs$100 weekday, $125 weekend with cart50 min
Pala Mesafrom $69 (undated)22 min

Journey at Pechanga is the splurge, at $215 for the public and $175 for hotel guests, with a 7-day booking window. A weekly rotation of three or four of these keeps a long stay interesting; see our snowbird golf schedule for Temecula. The weekday-weekend gaps at California Oaks ($13), Hemet ($10) and Soboba ($25) argue for midweek rounds on the pricier courses.

How do you handle rain, fog and short days?

Plan around three things.

  1. Rain. Wet days close courses or make them cart-path-only. Wet-weather closures and cart-path-only days are most common from December to March. Keep a flexible midweek day so one washed-out round can slide.
  2. Fog and frost. Cold, clear dawns and ground fog can delay first tee times. Book a later morning slot in December and January.
  3. Daylight. Sunset is as early as 4:42pm in December. Do not book twilight rounds expecting 18 holes.

Rainy days have plenty to fill them. Most tasting rooms have covered or indoor space, so a wet golf day can become a tasting day, with a driver or tour for the trip. Pechanga Resort Casino has gaming, restaurants and shows under one roof, and the Western Science Center in Hemet is a museum beside Diamond Valley Lake. Hours and fees for the museum were not read. What about overseed and conditions in winter?

Most Temecula-area courses are bermudagrass or kikuyu that browns and slows in winter, and some overseed fairways and tees with ryegrass in fall. Per-course 2026 overseed and aeration dates were not read, so ask each course. Echo Hills in Hemet, for example, overseeds annually and is walking only until about November 17, per the district page, though the year is not stated.

How does Temecula compare with the desert?

Palm Springs is about 1.5 hours away and drier. If you are weighing the two for a winter, read our Temecula vs Palm Springs golf comparison and the Palm Springs winter golf for snowbirds. Canadian snowbirds should also read Canadian snowbirds in Temecula.

What does each month of Temecula winter golf look like?

November. Fall-peak pricing, highs of about 74F and 1.15 inches of rain. The clocks have gone back, so sunset is about 4:46pm. Santa Ana wind episodes are most common October through December. Thanksgiving is November 26, 2026.

December. Temecula winter golf at its shortest days, with sunset about 4:42pm and 9 hours 57 minutes of daylight. Highs of 67F, lows of 46F and 2.64 inches of rain over about 6.5 days. Holiday weeks are busy in wine country and at Pechanga.

January. Slightly longer days, with sunset at about 5:04pm, highs of 67.5F and 3.17 inches of rain. Vineyards are dormant and tasting rooms are quiet midweek. Winter rates are the cheapest of the cool months.

February. The wettest month by total, at 3.74 inches over about 6 rain days. Wet days can close courses or make them cart-path-only. Valentine's and Presidents' Day weekends fill wine-country hotels. Rates climb toward spring.

March. Drying out, with highs of about 70F, 2.02 inches and the spring peak beginning. Clocks go forward on March 14, 2027, so sunset jumps to about 6:56pm by mid-month. Spring-break weekends are busy in wine country.

A four-month stay that starts in mid-November and ends in mid-March therefore covers the fall peak, the cheapest winter weeks and the start of spring pricing. If you can only stay two months, December and January are the cheapest and quietest. Whatever you pick, keep a rain buffer in the weekly plan.
