Scorecard: Canadian snowbirds Temecula guide: getting from Western Canada, time zones and a winter of golf

Canadian snowbirds Temecula visitors are a small part of a larger California winter market, but the arithmetic works for golfers who want a mild, green stay. San Diego airport is about 72 minutes from Old Town Temecula, winter highs are about 67F, and rentals and RV parks cover one to four months.

This guide covers getting here from Western Canada, the time-zone gap, the stay rules that apply to Canadians and where to base. The immigration, tax and health points are general information carried over from our research and not re-checked, so confirm every one with the Canadian Snowbird Association, CBP, the IRS and your province. Prices were seen in November 2026.

Quick facts

  • Winter weather: highs about 67F, lows 46 to 47F, the wettest months of the year.

How do you get from Western Canada to Temecula?

There are two ways, flying or driving.

Flying. Fly into one of four airports and rent a car, because there is no practical transit to Temecula from any of them.

Airport Drive to Old Town Temecula Drive to Pechanga Note
San Diego (SAN)72 min, 58 mi76 minUsually the closest big airport; routes unchecked
Ontario (ONT)65 min, 51 mi72 minI-15 through Corona backs up at rush hour and Friday afternoons
Palm Springs (PSP)90 min, 69 mi97 minSeasonal Canadian and US service in winter per our Palm Springs research; useful if you combine desert and Temecula
Los Angeles (LAX)109 min, 91 mi116 minPlan 2 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic

These are free-flow estimates that ignore traffic, and some look slow, so treat them as rough. Our flying into Temecula for golf guide goes through them.

Driving. We did not measure a drive from Canada. Alberta, BC and Washington snowbirds typically take I-5 or I-15 south into San Diego County and then I-15 to Temecula, though the route was not checked. Winter weather in the Cascades, the Siskiyou pass, Montana and Idaho can slow or close roads. I-15 through the Temecula and Murrieta corridor is congested at weekday commute hours and on Fridays and Sundays.

If you are arriving with an RV, Pechanga RV Resort is the closest park to Journey at Pechanga. See Temecula RV parks for golf.

What is the time difference for Canadian snowbirds Temecula visitors?

Temecula is on Pacific Time with daylight saving, so it uses PST in winter and PDT from March 14 to November 7, 2027. Comparisons from Canada, carried over and not re-checked:

From Winter Summer
Vancouver (BC on UTC-7 since March 8, 2026)1 hour aheadsame
Alberta1 hour ahead1 hour ahead
Saskatchewan2 hours ahead1 hour ahead
Ontario and Quebec3 hours ahead3 hours ahead

For golf, this matters for booking windows. Journey at Pechanga opens tee times 7 days ahead, so mind the one- to three-hour gap when you set an alarm for the day it opens. Our Temecula tee times guide has the other windows.

What are the rules for a long stay?

Three separate clocks matter, and all of them are general information that you should confirm.

  1. US immigration. Canadian citizens visiting as tourists are normally admitted for up to six months. The Canadian Snowbird Association states it as six months less a day (182 days) in a 12-month period. CBP decides at the border.
  2. US tax. The IRS substantial presence test counts all days in the current year plus one-third of last year's and one-sixth of the year before. A total of 183 or more weighted days, with at least 31 this year, makes you a US tax resident unless you qualify for the closer connection exception by filing Form 8840.
  3. Provincial health coverage. Each province sets its own limit on time away. Separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential.

There is also a registration rule. Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record must register with USCIS. This is not tax or legal advice. Recheck before you travel.

What is a winter in Temecula like for a Canadian?

Mild, but not dry. Normals at the Fallbrook station are highs of about 67F and lows of 46 to 47F in December to February, with 2.6 to 3.7 inches of rain and 5 to 6 rain days a month. Mornings can be cold, clear and foggy, with frost on low ground. Sunset is about 4:42pm in December. It is cooler and wetter than Palm Springs or Phoenix and warmer than Las Vegas. See Temecula winter golf for snowbirds.

Wine country is quiet midweek in winter, and green fees step down from the fall peak, which is the point of the season.
