These are free-flow router estimates to Old Town Temecula, read November 6, 2026. They ignore traffic and some look slow, so use them as a ranking, not a schedule.

Which airport is best for a golf trip?

San Diego is the default. It is the largest nearby airport by nonstops (individual routes not checked), has a Rental Car Center with shuttle, and offers a straight run up I-15 through Fallbrook, which puts Pala Mesa and the Golf Club of California on the way. Read San Diego to Temecula golf.

Ontario is often the easiest short transfer when traffic is light, but I-15 through Corona and Temescal Canyon backs up on weekday rush hours and Friday afternoons. If your group lands on a Friday evening, a San Diego arrival can beat Ontario.

Palm Springs is the pick for snowbirds already flying to the desert and for trips that combine both towns. Hemet is only 58 minutes from PSP, so Soboba Springs and the Hemet courses are the natural bridge. See Temecula vs Palm Springs golf.

LAX has the largest set of nonstops, including international, but plan two to three and a half hours to get to Temecula. Many LA-origin visitors drive from home instead.

Traffic on I-15

I-15 is the spine of the area, from San Diego through Escondido and Fallbrook, north through Temecula and Murrieta, then Lake Elsinore and Corona toward Ontario. The Temecula-Murrieta corridor and the Temescal grade are congested on weekday commute hours and on Fridays and Sundays, when Las Vegas weekend traffic adds to it. Rancho California Rd and Winchester Rd back up near wine country on weekend afternoons.

Practical advice:

  • Land midday rather than at 5pm on a Friday.
  • Plan your first tee time for the next morning, not the day you arrive.
  • Leave on Sunday before the afternoon rush, or stay till Monday.

From the airport to the first course

Once you reach Old Town, the first rounds are close. Temecula Creek Inn is 5 minutes, the Legends at Temeku Hills 8, and Journey at Pechanga and Redhawk 10 each. With a San Diego arrival at 11am, a 2:30pm twilight tee time at the Legends is realistic, but allow for traffic. See the Legends course guide and the Journey at Pechanga guide.

From Phoenix and the desert

Phoenix is about six hours (330 miles) by road. Driving from Arizona, see the Scottsdale golf trip guide. From Palm Springs, the drive is about 1.5 hours; the Palm Springs fly-in guide covers that airport.

Clubs and cars

Club rentals are generally available at Temecula-area public and resort courses (rates not read), and airline bag fees often make renting cheaper for a two-to-three-round trip. Rental-delivery services were not researched.

Plan the rest of the trip

Once you pick an airport, use Temecula golf trip to place the stay and where to stay in Temecula for golf to choose a base. For a three-day plan, see the Temecula golf trip itinerary, and for timing, best time to golf in Temecula.

If you are flying in from other time zones

Temecula is on Pacific time with daylight saving. Arizona stays on MST with no daylight saving, so it matches California in summer and is one hour ahead in winter. British Columbia has stayed on UTC-7 since March 8, 2026, so Vancouver is one hour ahead in winter and level in summer. Alberta is one hour ahead all year. Utah is one hour ahead all year, and Washington matches Temecula. Book a first round after noon on arrival day.

Which airport suits which group

Group Likely airport Why
Buddies from ArizonaDrive, or fly SANPhoenix is about six hours by road
Couples from the MidwestSAN or ONTShort transfer, rental car
Snowbirds already in the desertPSP90 minutes, or 58 to Hemet
International arrivalsLAXMost nonstops, longest drive
Local day-trippersNoneDrive from San Diego or Los Angeles

Downtown San Diego is 68 minutes from Old Town and downtown Los Angeles 99. Phoenix is 364 minutes, so most Arizona visitors treat it as a long drive rather than a flight.

What to do on arrival day

Most groups land in the afternoon. Do not plan an 18-hole round on the day you arrive unless you land before noon. A better arrival-day plan is dinner in Old Town and an early start. If you must play, nine holes at Echo Hills is $15 daily, but it is a 37-minute drive from Old Town.

Driving from far away

Phoenix to Old Town is about 331 miles. Canadian snowbirds typically drive I-5 or I-15 south to San Diego County, then I-15 to Temecula; that route was not measured, and winter weather in the Cascades, Siskiyou pass, Montana and Idaho can slow or close roads. See Canadian snowbirds in Temecula.
