Course elevations: Canadian snowbirds in Arizona: flights to Phoenix, the drive south, stay limits and a winter of golf

Canadian snowbirds in Arizona mostly fly or drive to the Phoenix area for a winter of golf. WestJet, Air Canada and Porter fly nonstop to Sky Harbor from Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and the Prairies, and the drive from Calgary is about 27.5 hours. Then there are the three day counts: US immigration, US tax and provincial health cover.

This guide covers flights, the drive south, time zones, stay limits as the files state them, and how to set up a winter of golf from a Mesa RV park, a Sun Lakes condo or a Scottsdale rental. Stay-limit notes are general information, not tax or legal advice.

Quick facts

  • Nonstops to PHX: WestJet, Air Canada and Porter from Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and more.
  • Drive: Calgary about 27.5 hours, Edmonton about 31, Vancouver about 30, Winnipeg about 34 (free-flow estimates).
  • Time: Phoenix matches BC all year; Alberta and Saskatchewan are one hour ahead.
  • Immigration: up to six months as a tourist, stated by the CSA as 182 days in 12 months.
  • Registration: 30+ days without an I-94 means Form G-325R with USCIS.
  • Golf season: November to April, peaking January to March.

Flights from Canada to Phoenix

Most Canadian nonstops land at Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), 18 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale and 23 minutes from central Mesa in free-flow. Per Wikipedia's airlines table, read November 3, 2026:

Airline Year-round Seasonal
WestJetCalgary, EdmontonKelowna, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg
Air CanadaVancouverToronto-Pearson, Montreal
Air Canada RougeMontrealToronto
Air Canada ExpressnoneVancouver
PorterToronto-PearsonVancouver; Edmonton from Nov 6, 2026; Calgary from Dec 20, 2026

A September 17, 2026 travel-news article says WestJet plans 61 weekly winter 2026-27 flights to PHX from Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Regina, Saskatoon, Vancouver and Winnipeg, 17 more a week than last winter. WestJet Vancouver is in the article but not the table, and Flair's current Phoenix service was not confirmed. Check the airline before you book.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (AZA) is closer to the east Mesa and Apache Junction RV parks but has no Canadian service listed. See flights to Phoenix for golf.

Driving to Arizona from Alberta, BC and the Prairies

Many snowbirds drive so they have their own car or RV for five months. OSRM free-flow estimates to Old Town Scottsdale:

From Distance Free-flow time
Calgary2,498 kmabout 27.5 hr
Vancouver2,494 kmabout 30 hr
Edmonton2,789 kmabout 31 hr
Winnipeg2,999 kmabout 34 hr
Seattle2,275 kmabout 27 hr

OSRM runs long, so real driving is usually a little shorter. Alberta drivers commonly take I-15 through the Coutts/Sweetgrass crossing, then Montana, Idaho, Utah and Las Vegas, and US 93 into Phoenix; BC drivers take I-5 or cut across to I-15 and US 93 (routes not checked turn by turn). Winter weather on I-15 in Montana, Idaho and Utah, and on I-17 near Flagstaff if you come through northern Arizona, can slow or close the road.

If you drive in at a land crossing, you probably will not get an I-94 record, which matters for the registration rule below. For the Yuma version of the trip, see driving from Calgary to Yuma.

Time zones

All of Maricopa County, including Scottsdale, Phoenix and Mesa, is on Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7) all year.

  • British Columbia: on UTC-7 since March 8, 2026, so Vancouver matches Phoenix all year.
  • Alberta and Saskatchewan: one hour ahead of Phoenix all year.
  • Manitoba: one hour ahead in winter, two in summer (assuming it still observes daylight saving; not re-checked).
  • Ontario and Quebec: two hours ahead in winter, three in summer.

Stay limits for Canadian snowbirds in Arizona

Three separate clocks matter. These notes were carried over from our Palm Springs research (checked November 2, 2026) and are general information only.

  1. US immigration. Canadian citizens visiting as tourists are normally admitted for up to six months. The Canadian Snowbird Association states the limit as "six months less a day" (182 days) in a 12-month period, and CBP decides at the border.
  2. US tax. The IRS substantial presence test counts all days this year, one-third of last year's and one-sixth of the year before. 183 or more weighted days (with at least 31 this year) makes you a US tax resident unless you qualify for the closer connection exception by filing Form 8840, due by June 15 for most snowbirds. About 120 days a year, every year, stays under 183 weighted days.
  3. Provincial health cover. Each province sets its own limit on time away, commonly around 182-183 days in 12 months. Separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential.

Registration: since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record must register with USCIS on Form G-325R. Recheck all of these before you go.

Where Canadian snowbirds in Arizona stay

  • East Mesa, Apache Junction and Gold Canyon RV resorts: January to March from $3,445 at Apache Wells to $5,400 at Gold Canyon RV & Golf Resort, plus utilities, on the 2026-27 cards. Most need one guest aged 55 or more. See Mesa RV resorts.
  • Sun Lakes: furnished golf-course condos and homes at about $2,000 to $3,500 a month in listings seen.
  • Kierland and north Scottsdale: furnished condos at about $3,000 to $7,000 or more a month.

Compare them in Phoenix snowbird rentals. If you fly, budget for a car: the east Mesa RV parks alone are about 30 to 45 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale in free-flow.

Golf for a whole winter

For Canadian snowbirds in Arizona, a winter usually means three or four rounds a week for four or five months, so the cost of each round matters more than the name.

  • Cards with no residency rule in the files: Arcis Players' Card $279 (20%+ off at 8 courses including Ocotillo), Talking Stick Card $129 plus tax (Talking Stick O'odham is 15 minutes from Old Town), and the $360 Loyalty Card covering Dove Valley Ranch, Power Ranch and Longbow.
  • City courses: the Phoenix Golf Card is $60 the first year for Maricopa County residents and $120 a year for non-residents, valid at the city courses plus Papago and GCU. Whether non-resident holders get the same card rates is not stated, so ask.
  • Arizona ID rates: We-Ko-Pa's needs every player in the group to show an Arizona driver's licence or ID, so most visiting Canadians pay the resort rate ($239 from October 23 to January 7, $329 from January 8, 2027).
  • Value daily-fee golf near the RV parks: Painted Mountain at $37.99 to $44.99 on GolfNow in September-October 2026, and Longbow at $50.15 to $59 for a November date on the Troon site.

Peak weeks to plan around are the WM Phoenix Open (February 8-14, 2027) and spring training (from February 19, 2027), which also draws big crowds from Canada.
