Flights to Phoenix for golf almost always mean Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX): it is about 18 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale, has the Canadian nonstops, and is close to most of the Valley's public courses. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (AZA) only makes sense for an East Valley or RV-resort stay on Allegiant or Sun Country.
This guide compares the two airports, lists the nonstops our research found, and covers the long drive south for snowbirds. Airline lists were read on November 3, 2026 and schedules change, so check the airline before you book.
Quick facts
- Best airport: PHX, 18 minutes and 10 miles to Old Town Scottsdale (free-flow estimate).
- East Valley alternative: AZA, 28 minutes to central Mesa, 42 to Old Town.
- Canadian nonstops: WestJet, Air Canada and Porter into PHX; none listed into AZA.
- Clock: Mountain Standard Time all year; one hour ahead of Pacific time in winter.
- Driving from Calgary: about 27.5 hours, 2,498 km.
- Arrival-day golf: Papago is 9 minutes from Old Town, Talking Stick 15.

For anyone staying in Scottsdale, Phoenix or Tempe, PHX wins on every count. For a winter in an east Mesa, Apache Junction or Gold Canyon RV resort, AZA is the closer airport, and it handled 2,035,505 passengers in 2025.
Canadian flights to Phoenix
For Canadians, flights to Phoenix for golf mean Sky Harbor. Per its airline table read November 3, 2026:
- WestJet: Calgary and Edmonton year-round; Kelowna, Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg seasonal.
- Air Canada: Vancouver year-round; Toronto-Pearson and Montreal seasonal. Air Canada Rouge flies Montreal year-round and Toronto seasonally, and Air Canada Express adds seasonal Vancouver.
- Porter: Toronto-Pearson year-round; Vancouver seasonal; new seasonal Edmonton from November 6, 2026 and Calgary from December 20, 2026.
A September 17, 2026 travel-news article says WestJet plans 61 weekly winter 2026-27 flights to PHX from Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Regina, Saskatoon, Vancouver and Winnipeg, 17 more a week than last winter. WestJet Vancouver was not in the airport table, so confirm it. Flair's current Phoenix service and any Air Canada service from Calgary or Edmonton were not confirmed in our research.
AZA has no Canadian service listed. WestJet and Swoop did not return there after 2022-23. Canadians who want Allegiant usually cross to Bellingham and fly from there. For Canadian winter planning beyond flights, see Canadian snowbirds in Arizona.
US flights to Phoenix
American and Southwest both run hubs at PHX (Terminal 4) with wide Midwest service. Delta flies year-round from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Seattle and Detroit; Sun Country from Minneapolis/St. Paul; Alaska from Seattle; and United from Chicago-O'Hare and its other hubs.
At AZA, Allegiant serves a long list of smaller cities, including Bellingham, Boise, Fargo, Bismarck, Sioux Falls, Spokane, Des Moines, Omaha and Grand Rapids, and Sun Country flies seasonally from Minneapolis/St. Paul. If your home airport is on that list, AZA can save a connection, especially for an East Valley base.
Golf near the airports
Sky Harbor sits in the middle of the Valley, so arrival and departure-day rounds are easy:
- Papago: the city-owned course 9 minutes from Old Town, from $109 on GolfNow pricing (read November 3, 2026). See the Papago course guide.
- Talking Stick O'odham: wide and walkable, 15 minutes from Old Town; the course notes call it a good arrival-day round. See the O'odham course guide.
- Arizona Biltmore Estates: flat and central, from $89 with cart on GolfPass. The Arizona Biltmore resort beside it is about 15 minutes from Sky Harbor.
- Whirlwind Cattail: 36 holes on Gila River land by the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass, about 15 to 20 minutes from Sky Harbor.
Close to AZA, Toka Sticks is an older, flat course by the airport, 1.6 miles from the Courtyard Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport. Longbow in northeast Mesa showed $50.15 to $59 on the Troon site for November 7, and Superstition Springs is Mesa's main mid-priced daily fee (rates not published).
Driving in from Canada and the US
Many snowbirds drive so they have a car for a whole winter. Free-flow estimates to Old Town Scottsdale, from November 3, 2026:
| From | Distance | Free-flow time |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle | 2,275 km (1,414 mi) | about 27 hr |
| Calgary | 2,498 km (1,552 mi) | about 27.5 hr |
| Vancouver | 2,494 km (1,550 mi) | about 30 hr |
| Minneapolis | 2,626 km (1,632 mi) | about 30 hr |
| Edmonton | 2,789 km (1,733 mi) | about 31 hr |
| Winnipeg | 2,999 km (1,863 mi) | about 34 hr |
The routing tool tends to run long, so real driving is usually a little shorter. Alberta drivers commonly take I-15 through the Coutts/Sweetgrass crossing, then Montana, Idaho, Utah and Las Vegas, and US 93 down to Phoenix. BC drivers take I-5 or cut across to I-15 and US 93. Routes were not checked turn by turn. Winter weather on I-15 in Montana, Idaho and Utah, and on I-17 at Flagstaff if you come through northern Arizona, can slow or close the road.
If you are combining Arizona with other desert towns, see our Phoenix to Yuma drive guide and Phoenix to Tucson golf.
Paperwork and the clock
Three rules matter for long winter stays, as our research summarises them (general information only, not tax or legal advice):
- Immigration: Canadian tourists are normally admitted for up to six months; the Canadian Snowbird Association gives the limit as 182 days in 12 months.
- US tax: the IRS substantial presence test counts weighted days over three years; Form 8840 is due by June 15 for most snowbirds claiming the closer connection exception.
- Registration: since April 11, 2025, Canadians 14 and over staying 30 days or more without an I-94 record, which includes most drivers, must register with USCIS.
Phoenix stays on Mountain Standard Time all year. From November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027 it is one hour ahead of Pacific time, then matches Pacific daylight time. Vancouver matches Phoenix all year; Alberta and Saskatchewan are one hour ahead.

Questions golfers ask
Which airport is best for a Scottsdale golf trip?
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). It is about 18 minutes and 10 miles from Old Town Scottsdale and 34 minutes from north Scottsdale at Pinnacle Peak Road on a free-flow estimate. Most Canadian nonstops land there.
Is Mesa Gateway (AZA) a good option for golfers?
It suits East Valley stays. AZA is about 28 minutes from central Mesa but 42 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale and 56 minutes from north Scottsdale. Its airlines are Allegiant and seasonal Sun Country to Minneapolis/St. Paul, and it has no Canadian service listed.
Which Canadian cities fly nonstop to Phoenix?
Per the airport's airline listing read November 3, 2026: WestJet from Calgary and Edmonton year-round and seasonally from Kelowna, Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg; Air Canada from Vancouver year-round and seasonally from Toronto and Montreal; and Porter from Toronto year-round, with seasonal Vancouver, Edmonton (from November 6, 2026) and Calgary (from December 20, 2026). Confirm schedules with the airline.
How long is the drive from Calgary to Scottsdale?
About 27.5 hours and 2,498 km on a free-flow routing estimate, which usually runs a little long. Edmonton is about 31 hours, Vancouver about 30 and Winnipeg about 34. Winter weather on I-15 through Montana, Idaho and Utah can slow or close the route.
Do Canadians who drive in need to register for a long stay?
Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record, which includes most who drive in at a land crossing, must register with USCIS. This is general information, not legal advice, so check the current rules before you go.
What time zone is Phoenix in for golf trips?
Mountain Standard Time all year, with no daylight saving. From November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027 Phoenix is one hour ahead of Pacific time, and Vancouver matches Phoenix all year because British Columbia stays on UTC-7. Alberta and Saskatchewan are one hour ahead of Phoenix all year.
Can I play golf on arrival day?
Yes, if you land by early afternoon. Papago is about 9 minutes from Old Town and Talking Stick about 15, so a lunchtime landing at Sky Harbor can make an afternoon tee time. In December the sun sets around 5:21 PM, so leave room for a full round.
