The Phoenix to Tucson drive is about 110 miles and two hours on I-10 east from Phoenix Sky Harbor to downtown Tucson, by free-flow routing. Plan for longer: Phoenix traffic and crashes or construction between Chandler and Picacho often add time. The good news for golfers is that the first Tucson-area courses sit in Marana, right off I-10, before you reach the city.
Many golfers fly into Phoenix for cheaper fares or, from Canada, the only nonstops in Arizona. This guide covers the drive itself and how to turn it into a round on arrival day.
Quick facts
- Distance: 110.5 miles (178 km), PHX to downtown Tucson via I-10.
- Free-flow time: 121 minutes (OSRM). OSRM tends to run 10-20 percent long on interstate legs, but traffic often more than cancels that out.
- Slow spots: Phoenix traffic, and crashes or construction between Chandler and Picacho.
- Time zone: no change; both cities are on Mountain Standard Time all year.
- First golf off I-10: Marana and northwest Tucson, around 19-23 minutes from downtown on the Phoenix side.
- Summer hazard: dust storms on I-10 during the monsoon.
The Phoenix to Tucson drive on I-10
It is one road. From Sky Harbor, you take I-10 east toward Tucson. In Tucson, I-10 runs northwest to southeast through the city, so you arrive from the northwest through Marana, where the exits for Dove Mountain are in the Tangerine Road and Twin Peaks area, and the northwest courses sit off the Cortaro and Orange Grove exits before downtown.
The free-flow figure of 121 minutes assumes no traffic. In practice, the Phoenix end of the drive is the variable one. Leaving Sky Harbor at rush hour, or hitting a crash or construction zone between Chandler and Picacho, can add a lot. If your tee time is fixed, leave yourself a buffer.
Coming from farther away. From Las Vegas, the route runs via US-93 through Kingman and Wickenburg to Phoenix, then I-10: 405.5 miles and about 478 minutes free-flow to downtown Tucson. Drivers from Calgary and Edmonton typically come down I-15 via Great Falls, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, then US-93 to Phoenix and I-10; Calgary to Tucson is about 2,665 km and 29 hours free-flow, and most snowbirds take three days.
| From | To downtown Tucson | Free-flow time |
|---|---|---|
| Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) | 110.5 mi (178 km) | 121 min |
| Las Vegas (downtown) | 405.5 mi (653 km) | 478 min |
| Calgary | 1,656 mi (2,665 km) | about 29 hr |
| Tucson airport (TUS), for comparison | 9.3 mi (15 km) | 17 min |

A golf stop on the way in
Because I-10 enters Tucson from the northwest, the Marana and northwest courses are the natural arrival-day round. You reach them before the city, so you can play, then drive the last stretch to your base.

The budget stop: Quarry Pines. A cheap, short public course built in and around an old quarry west of I-10 near Continental Ranch. Pace can drag, so it is not a destination, but it is the closest round to the highway. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Tucson North - Marana is half a mile away if you want to stop for the night.
The mid-range stop: Crooked Tree. A solid public 18 in the northwest at mid-range prices, about 11 minutes from that Marana hotel.
The tour-history stop: Omni Tucson National. The Catalina Course hosted the PGA Tour Champions event from 2015 to 2023, and its 18th is the old tour finishing hole. The Sonoran is the shorter par-70 desert course. Both are open to the public, carts included. See the Omni Tucson National Catalina course guide and our Omni Tucson National golf guide.
The splurge, if you are staying there. The Nicklaus 27 at Dove Mountain is only open to members and guests of the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain. If you are not staying, the Highlands at Dove Mountain in the same foothills sells public tee times. See the Highlands at Dove Mountain course guide and our Dove Mountain golf guide.
We did not research courses between Phoenix and Marana, so this guide does not cover stops on the Casa Grande or Picacho stretch.
Where to base after the drive
If you flew into Phoenix, a northern base saves time both ways. Marana, Dove Mountain and Oro Valley are closer to PHX than downtown Tucson is. Oro Valley is about 24 minutes from downtown; Green Valley, on the far side of the city, is about 34 minutes south of downtown, so it adds that to every airport run. Our Marana golf guide and where to stay in Tucson for golf compare the bases.
Arrival-day timing
A Phoenix arrival and a same-day round need some slack. Add the 121-minute free-flow drive, a margin for Phoenix traffic, and time to collect bags and a car. A morning flight into PHX lines up with an early-afternoon tee time in Marana; a later flight is better used for a range session and an early night.
In winter, book the earliest afternoon time you can reach comfortably; the December normal high at Tucson airport is 65.5F, so a late finish gets cool. For snowbirds driving down from Canada, the last leg from Phoenix is a good day to stop, rest and play the first round of the winter close to the highway.
Seasonal notes for the drive
- Monsoon (June 15-September 30): dust storms on I-10, afternoon thunderstorms and flash flooding. Drive in the morning.
- El Tour de Tucson, Saturday, November 21, 2026: rolling road closures across Tucson, Marana and Oro Valley much of the day. Avoid an arrival that afternoon if you can.
- February and March: Tucson's gem shows fill hotels from late January to mid-February, and Phoenix hotels and PHX flights are busier in March.
- Spring training: none in Tucson; the Cactus League is entirely in metro Phoenix, about two hours north. A split stay can cover both.
Phoenix to Tucson as part of a bigger trip
The drive works as the spine of a longer Arizona road trip. Our Yuma guides cover the Phoenix to Yuma drive and a Yuma and Phoenix golf road trip. Questions golfers ask
How long is the drive from Phoenix to Tucson?
From Phoenix Sky Harbor to downtown Tucson is about 110.5 miles (178 km) and 121 minutes via I-10 east, by free-flow OSRM routing. Real times are often longer with Phoenix traffic and crashes or construction between Chandler and Picacho.
Is there a time change between Phoenix and Tucson?
No. Both are in Arizona, which keeps Mountain Standard Time all year with no daylight saving. Your tee time means the same clock in both cities.
Where can I play golf on the way from Phoenix to Tucson?
The easiest stops are in Marana and northwest Tucson, the first golf you reach coming down I-10. Quarry Pines sits west of I-10 near Continental Ranch, with Crooked Tree and Omni Tucson National a few minutes away. Our research did not cover courses between Phoenix and Marana.
Which part of Tucson is closest to Phoenix?
Marana, Dove Mountain and Oro Valley are closer to Phoenix Sky Harbor than downtown Tucson is. A base there cuts the airport drive and keeps the northwest courses close.
Can I play the Dove Mountain Nicklaus course on the way in?
Only if you are staying at the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain or playing with a member. It has not been a public course for non-guests since the 2016 Escalante purchase. The Highlands at Dove Mountain nearby sells public tee times on GolfNow.
Is the Phoenix to Tucson drive bad in summer?
The monsoon, June 15 to September 30, can bring dust storms on I-10 along with afternoon thunderstorms and flash flooding. Drive early in the day in July and August, and pull off if visibility drops.
Is there a shuttle from Phoenix airport to Tucson?
Airport shuttles run between PHX and Tucson, but we did not verify operators or fares. With clubs and courses spread across the region, most golfers rent a car.
