A Tucson golf weekend from Phoenix works best on the northwest side: drive down I-10 on Friday morning, play an afternoon round in Marana, spend Saturday at Tucson National, and play Sunday morning in Oro Valley or Marana before heading home. The drive is about two hours each way, and the clock is the same.
Here is the drive, where to base, a three-round plan with a four-round option, and the weekends that are harder than they look. Prices were seen in October 2026 and change, especially from January.
Quick facts
- Drive: Phoenix Sky Harbor to downtown Tucson about 121 minutes, 110.5 miles via I-10 (free-flow estimate).
- Base: northwest Tucson, Marana or Oro Valley, all closer to Phoenix than downtown.
- Time zone: the same as Phoenix, Mountain Standard Time all year.
- Rounds: three in a Friday-to-Sunday weekend, four with a 36-hole Saturday.
- Green fees seen: $34.99 to $85.79 for 18 at northwest public and town courses (October 2026).
- Avoid: Saturday, November 21, 2026 (El Tour de Tucson road closures).
The drive down I-10
The OSRM router puts Phoenix Sky Harbor to downtown Tucson at 121 minutes for 110.5 miles. That is a free-flow figure. Phoenix traffic and crashes or construction on I-10 between Chandler and Picacho often make it longer, so a Friday afternoon departure is the slow option.
The good news for a Tucson golf weekend is that the northwest courses come first. Marana, Dove Mountain and Oro Valley are all closer to Phoenix than downtown Tucson is, so a northwest base trims the drive at both ends. Our Phoenix to Tucson drive guide covers the route in more detail.
If you are flying in rather than driving, Phoenix Sky Harbor is often cheaper and is the only Arizona airport with Canadian nonstops found. Tucson International is about 17 minutes from downtown. See flights to Tucson.
Where to base
| Base | Golf nearby | Parking | Why it fits a weekend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omni Tucson National Resort | Catalina and Sonoran on site; Crooked Tree 8 min; Quarry Pines 11 min | Self-parking free or $5 a day | 36 holes without driving |
| Holiday Inn Express Tucson North - Marana | Quarry Pines 2 min; Crooked Tree 11 min; Tucson National 13 min | Free, fits trailers | Budget, free breakfast |
| Holiday Inn Express Oro Valley | El Conquistador 9 min; The Views 9 min | Free | Value base under Pusch Ridge |
| The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain | Golf Club at Dove Mountain 4 min | Valet only, $42 a day | The splurge, with guest-only golf |
Room rates for the resorts could not be read online in October 2026, so price your dates directly. The Ritz-Carlton listed a resort charge of about $68.73 a night on travel sites, and Omni one of $32.49 on a single travel site, unconfirmed.
A three-round Tucson golf weekend
| Day | Round | Drive from Omni | Fee seen | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friday PM | Quarry Pines or Crooked Tree | 11 / 8 min | $34.99 / $42.95-$63.17 | Afternoon round after the drive |
| Saturday | Tucson National Catalina | 3 min | No 2026 rate readable | The old tour course |
| Sunday AM | El Conquistador or Highlands at Dove Mountain | 12 / 19 min | $46.69-$85.79 / $39.99-$47.99 (Sept 2026) | Then I-10 home |
Fees are the published figures seen in October 2026: Quarry Pines on GolfNow for October 20, Crooked Tree and El Conquistador on GolfLink for October 27, and the Highlands from September 2026 Hot Deals. The Quarry Pines, Crooked Tree and Highlands prices include a cart; the El Conquistador listing did not say.
Friday. Leave Phoenix in the morning and you can be on the first tee in Marana by early afternoon. Quarry Pines is the cheap option, built in and around an old quarry west of I-10, though pace can drag. Crooked Tree is a solid public 18 at mid-range prices, 7,065 yards from the back at a 132 slope and 6,279 from the middle tees. It was also one of the few nearby courses taking times through overseed in late October 2026, which makes it a safe Friday pick for an early-season Tucson golf weekend. The Crooked Tree course guide has the full tee list.
Saturday. Tucson National's Catalina course is par 73 and 7,262 yards from the Blue tees, with a 72.2 rating and 131 slope from the White tees at 6,610. Its 18th was the PGA Tour and Champions Tour finishing hole, and tour events were played there through 2023. The Catalina course guide has the tees.
Sunday. El Conquistador is a town-owned Oro Valley course managed by Troon, under Pusch Ridge in the Santa Catalinas. The Highlands at Dove Mountain is a 55+ community course that sells public prepaid times and pairs groups under four. Either is a short hop back to I-10.
The four-round version
To add a round, play 36 at Tucson National on Saturday: Catalina in the morning, then the Sonoran course after lunch. Sonoran is a par-70 desert layout with 69 bunkers and two lakes, 6,021 yards from the White tees at a 125 slope, so it is a gentler second loop. Both courses include carts.
What about Dove Mountain?
The Golf Club at Dove Mountain is the 27-hole Nicklaus course that once hosted the WGC Match Play. Since the 2016 Escalante purchase it has been open only to members and guests of the Ritz-Carlton, so it fits a weekend only if you book the hotel. A 2024 listing put peak dynamic rates at $250 to $360 with a cart. The Dove Mountain golf guide explains access.
Weekends to avoid or plan around
- November 21, 2026: El Tour de Tucson runs rolling road closures across Tucson, Marana and Oro Valley much of the Saturday.
- About January 27 to February 14, 2027: the gem and mineral shows fill hotels citywide, especially along I-10 and downtown. Basing in Oro Valley or Marana helps.
- February 20-28, 2027: La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, the Tucson rodeo, makes hotels busier.
- Mid-September to October: overseed closures, temporary greens and cart-path-only at many courses. Crooked Tree showed an overseed alert on its October 2026 times.
- March: spring training is in metro Phoenix, not Tucson, so Phoenix hotels and flights are busier while Tucson is at peak golf season.

Tips for a short trip
A Tucson golf weekend leaves little slack, so a few habits matter more than usual.
- Book Saturday first. It is the round the weekend is built around.
- Start later in winter. January lows average 40.8F at the airport and colder away from the city core, so early tee times can carry frost delays.
- Pack for a 25-degree swing. January runs from about 41F at dawn to 66.5F in the afternoon at the airport.
- Keep Sunday short. A morning round and an early afternoon departure leaves room for slow traffic on I-10.
For a longer version, the Tucson golf trip itinerary covers four courses in four days, and the Marana golf guide lists every course on the northwest side. If you are weighing other weekend towns, our Yuma golf weekend guide is the western Arizona option.

Questions golfers ask
How long is the drive from Phoenix to Tucson for a golf weekend?
About 121 minutes and 110.5 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor to downtown Tucson on I-10, on a free-flow estimate. Real times are often longer with Phoenix traffic and crashes or construction between Chandler and Picacho. Marana, Dove Mountain and Oro Valley are closer to Phoenix than downtown Tucson is.
Where should I stay for a Tucson golf weekend from Phoenix?
The northwest side, so you cut drive time at both ends. Omni Tucson National has 36 holes on site, and the Holiday Inn Express in Marana is a budget option two minutes from Quarry Pines. Both are off the I-10 corridor.
Can I play three rounds in a Tucson golf weekend?
Yes. Leave Phoenix on Friday morning for an afternoon round, play Saturday at Tucson National, then a Sunday morning round before the drive home. A 36-hole Saturday on the Catalina and Sonoran courses makes it four rounds.
Is there a time difference between Phoenix and Tucson?
No. Both are in Arizona, which stays on Mountain Standard Time all year with no daylight saving. Tee times, check-in and dinner reservations use the same clock as Phoenix.
What weekends should I avoid for golf in Tucson?
El Tour de Tucson on Saturday, November 21, 2026 brings rolling road closures across Tucson, Marana and Oro Valley. The gem and mineral shows, about January 27 to February 14, 2027, fill hotels across the city. Overseed closures hit many courses from mid-September into October.
What does a Tucson golf weekend cost in green fees?
On the northwest courses in October 2026, Quarry Pines was $34.99 with cart, Crooked Tree $42.95 to $63.17 and El Conquistador $46.69 to $85.79 for 18. Resort rates at Tucson National were not readable. Prices rise in peak season, January to April.
Can I play Dove Mountain on a weekend trip?
Only if you stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain or play with a member. The Golf Club at Dove Mountain has not been open to non-guests since 2016. The nearby Highlands at Dove Mountain sells public tee times on GolfNow.
