The Phoenix to Yuma drive takes about three hours and covers 189 miles: I-10 west out of Phoenix, AZ-85 south through Buckeye to Gila Bend, then I-8 west across open desert to Yuma. There is no time change, the road is easy, and the only real planning point is fuel, because services are thin after Gila Bend.
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is the airport most Yuma golfers use, so this is the drive that starts most trips. Below are the route, the bus and shuttle options, the American Eagle hop, and the golf stops along I-8. Times and fares were read on October 23, 2026.
Quick facts
- Distance: 189 miles from PHX to Yuma (Google Maps); 189.3 miles free-flow from the PHX Rental Car Center (OSRM).
- Time: 3 hr 14 min on Google with Friday afternoon traffic; 212 minutes on the free-flow router. Plan on about three hours plus a stop.
- Route: I-10 W, AZ-85 S via Buckeye to Gila Bend, I-8 W to Yuma.
- Clock: Phoenix, Wellton and Yuma are all on Arizona time all year. No change.
- Bus: Greyhound and FlixBus from downtown Phoenix, about 3 hours and about $27 to $45 one way (third-party samples, July 2026 dates).
- Flight: American Eagle PHX to YUM daily, about 1 hour, about $470 to $520 round trip in January.
The Phoenix to Yuma drive, step by step
Phoenix to Gila Bend. Leave the airport on I-10 west, then turn south on AZ-85 through Buckeye. Google's 3 hr 14 min reading was taken on a Friday afternoon or evening and includes the traffic at that moment, so an off-peak drive may be quicker.
Gila Bend. This is the last easy place to buy fuel, food and water for a long stretch. Fill up here.
Gila Bend to Yuma on I-8. I-8 runs west through open desert with few services. About 40 minutes before downtown Yuma you reach Wellton, then the Fortuna Foothills exits at Foothills Blvd and Fortuna Rd, about 16 miles and 21 minutes from central Yuma, and finally the city itself.
| Leg | What to expect |
|---|---|
| PHX to Buckeye (I-10 W) | The metro section; Google's time includes Friday traffic |
| Buckeye to Gila Bend (AZ-85 S) | South to the I-8 junction at Gila Bend |
| Gila Bend | Fuel, food, water: stop here |
| Gila Bend to Wellton (I-8 W) | Long open stretch, few services |
| Wellton to the Foothills (I-8 W) | Golf, RV parks and hotels start here |
| Foothills to downtown Yuma | About 16 miles, 21 minutes |
Golf stops on the way into Yuma
The neat thing about arriving from Phoenix is that the golf comes to you before the city does. You pass three groups of courses on I-8, in this order:
| Stop | Course | Holes / par | Price seen (October 2026) | Drive from downtown Yuma |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wellton | Coyote Wash | 18 / par 70 | Up to $70 with cart (FY 2026-27 maximum); $45 on late-October dates | 39 min, 32.3 mi |
| Wellton | Butterfield | 18 / par 54 | $30 before 1 PM, $24 after (FY 2025-26 sheet) | 41 min, 33.2 mi |
| Foothills | Las Barrancas | 18 / par 72 | $65 with cart; $55 twilight from 3 PM (posted) | 26 min, 18.3 mi |
| Foothills | Mesa del Sol | 18 / par 72 | $35 to $55 with cart online for late Oct to early Nov | 21 min, 14.8 mi |
| Yuma | Desert Hills | 18 / par 72 | Jan-Mar $75 ride before 11 AM, $49 after 1 PM | 11 min, 5.2 mi |
Rates change, and the 2027 peak rates for several of these courses are not posted. Butterfield's FY 2026-27 fees were not found, so its figures are last year's and may rise.
An afternoon round on arrival day works well. Leave PHX in the late morning, stop in Gila Bend, and you can be on the first tee at Coyote Wash in the early afternoon. Coyote Wash books online 14 days out on its TeeItUp page (the town brochure says 7 days by phone or GolfNow), and you pay at the course. Butterfield takes phone bookings only, up to 3 days ahead. More on both in the Coyote Wash golf guide and Wellton golf.
If you are staying in the Foothills, Mesa del Sol and Las Barrancas are the natural first round. The Las Barrancas course guide and the Mesa del Sol course guide have tees, ratings and booking rules, and Fortuna Foothills golf explains the area.
Where the Phoenix to Yuma drive ends: Foothills or town
Decide where you are sleeping before you leave Phoenix, because the Foothills exits come about 20 minutes before downtown. If your base is in the Foothills, the Phoenix to Yuma drive is effectively that much shorter.
| Stay | Area | Closest course (drive) |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort Inn & Suites Yuma I-8 | Foothills, Fortuna Rd | Mesa del Sol, 5 min |
| Best Western Plus Yuma Foothills | Foothills, S Frontage Rd | Mesa del Sol, 6 min |
| The Caravan Oasis | Foothills RV park, N Frontage Rd | Mesa del Sol, 6 min |
| Fortuna de Oro RV Resort | Foothills RV park, N Frontage Rd | Mesa del Sol, 8 min; Las Barrancas, 11 min |
| Hampton Inn & Suites Yuma | 16th Street, by I-8 | Yuma G&CC, 7 min; Desert Hills, 11 min |
The Comfort Inn has room to park a trailer, which helps if you are towing. Choice Hotels showed $156 a night for Wednesday, February 17, 2027 ($135 for members), seen October 2026. For RV sites, The Caravan Oasis lists $65 a day and Fortuna de Oro $72 a day for a back-in site; both have cheaper monthly and multi-month rates. Compare every base in where to stay in Yuma for golf.
Phoenix to Yuma without a car: bus and shuttle
Greyhound and FlixBus. Both run between downtown Phoenix and Yuma, not from the airport. Sample listings showed about 3 hours and about $27 to $45 one way for July 2026 dates. These are third-party figures, so check the operators before you rely on them.
Arizona GO! Sky Harbor's intercity shuttle page lists Arizona GO! (888-603-1766) as serving Yuma, but its website did not show a Yuma schedule or fare when checked on October 23, 2026. Call before planning around it.
The catch for golfers. Without a car you will need rides to every course. Desert Hills is 11 to 13 minutes from the 16th Street and downtown hotels, but Mesa del Sol and Las Barrancas are 17 to 27 minutes away. For a golf trip, a rental car from the PHX Rental Car Center is usually the simpler answer.
The American Eagle hop: PHX to YUM
American Eagle flies Phoenix to Yuma nonstop daily, about an hour, on SkyWest regional jets per flight trackers. Google Flights showed round trips of about $470 to $520 in January (read October 23, 2026), which is far more than the fuel for a three-hour drive.
It earns its fare in a few cases: you are already connecting through Phoenix on American, you have only three days and do not want to spend two half-days driving, or you would rather not drive at night. Four Yuma hotels list free airport shuttles, covered in flights to Yuma for golf. If San Diego suits your flights better, San Diego to Yuma covers the I-8 drive from the west and the winter time change.
Phoenix to Yuma drive options compared

| Arizona GO! shuttle | Not published | Not published | Call to confirm service |
| American Eagle flight | About 1 hour | About $470-$520 round trip (January) | Short trips connecting on American |
Driving it in the heat, and in winter
Yuma is one of the hottest places in the US in summer. NOAA normals at the Yuma airfield put average highs at about 94F in May, 103F in June, 107F in July, 106F in August and 101F in September. On a desert interstate with few services, that means plenty of water in the car, a full tank from Gila Bend and a vehicle you trust. July to September also bring monsoon storms with lightning and dust.
From November to April the Phoenix to Yuma drive is easy. Winter is when most visitors make it, and when the courses are busiest, so book tee times before you set off.
Phoenix for Canadian snowbirds
Phoenix has the best set of Canadian nonstops for Yuma: WestJet from Calgary daily, Edmonton six days a week and Saskatoon on Thursdays and Sundays; WestJet and Air Canada from Vancouver daily; Air Canada and Porter from Toronto daily (Google Flights, October 2026). Because Phoenix and Yuma share a clock, a 3:00 PM landing, a rental car and the 3-hour drive put you in Yuma around 7:00 PM on the same clock, with no adjustment.
If you want to add Valley golf to the trip, the Phoenix and Yuma golf trip guide covers the combination, and the Yuma golf weekend plan works for a short visit from Phoenix. Whichever course you pick for the first morning, check its booking window before you leave Phoenix: Las Barrancas opens only 7 days out.
