Atlas plate: Flights to Yuma for Golf: Which Airport Makes Sense

Flights to Yuma for golf come down to one choice: pay more to land at Yuma International (YUM), which has only American Eagle nonstops from Phoenix and Dallas/Fort Worth, or fly into Phoenix, San Diego or Palm Springs for cheaper fares and drive about three hours. For most golfers, and almost every Canadian, Phoenix wins.

This guide lays out each airport, the drive from it, the Canadian nonstops seen in October 2026 and the few cases where flying all the way into YUM is worth the fare. Fares and schedules here were read on October 23, 2026 and change often.

Quick facts

  • YUM: American Eagle only, daily nonstops to Phoenix (about 1 hr) and Dallas/Fort Worth (fastest 2 hr 55 min).
  • Phoenix (PHX): about 189 miles and 3 hr 14 min by road (Google, with Friday traffic); same clock as Yuma all year.
  • San Diego (SAN): about 177 miles and 2 hr 50 min; Pacific time, an hour behind Yuma in winter.
  • Palm Springs (PSP): about 164 miles and 2 hr 48 min; Pacific time.
  • No nonstop from Canada to Yuma. WestJet, Air Canada and Porter fly nonstop to Phoenix; WestJet and Air Canada also to Palm Springs and San Diego from some cities.
  • Fares change daily. Every fare below is a Google Flights snapshot from October 23, 2026.

Flights to Yuma for golf: the five airports compared

Airport Drive to Yuma Clock vs Yuma in winter Who flies there
Yuma (YUM)11 min, 5.2 miSameAmerican Eagle from PHX and DFW
Phoenix (PHX)3 hr 14 min, 189 miSameMost US airlines; WestJet, Air Canada, Porter from Canada
San Diego (SAN)2 hr 50 min, 177 mi1 hour behindWestJet from Calgary, Air Canada from Vancouver
Palm Springs (PSP)2 hr 48 min, 164 mi1 hour behindWestJet and Air Canada from western Canada and Toronto
Las Vegas (LAS)4 hr 56 min, 289 mi1 hour behindOnly worth it for a Vegas combo or a very cheap fare

Drive times are Google Maps readings from October 23, 2026 and include traffic at that moment. The free-flow OSRM router gives longer figures (212 minutes from the PHX Rental Car Center, 191 from SAN, 188 from PSP), so plan on about three hours from any of the three big airports.

Flying into Yuma International (YUM)

YUM is convenient: it sits about 5 miles from downtown and about 15 miles from the Fortuna Foothills courses. Yuma Golf & Country Club is right next to the airport, and Desert Hills is about 11 minutes from downtown.

The catch is service and price. American Eagle is the only airline, with daily nonstops to Phoenix (about an hour, operated by SkyWest regional jets according to flight trackers) and to Dallas/Fort Worth. Google Flights showed typical January round trips of about $470 to $520 from Phoenix and about $390 to $450 from Dallas/Fort Worth. That Phoenix hop costs more than many people pay for the main flight to Phoenix, and it is the reason most golfers fly into a bigger airport instead.

A few other things to know:

  • The runways are shared with Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, so military jet noise is normal.
  • The free MCAS Yuma Airshow on Saturday, March 13, 2027 brings heavy traffic around the base and airport, and flights at YUM may be affected that day.
  • Rental-car brands at YUM were not verified for this guide, so book a car before you land.

When flying all the way into YUM is worth the fare

  • You are already on American. If your fare to Yuma is close to your fare to Phoenix, the extra hop saves a three-hour drive each way.
  • Short buddies trip. On a three-day trip, losing an afternoon to the drive on each end costs you a round. Landing at YUM can mean a midday arrival and an afternoon tee time.
  • You do not want a car for the whole stay. Four hotels list free airport shuttles: the Hilton Garden Inn Yuma Pivot Point (a 12-passenger van), the Holiday Inn Yuma the Holiday Inn Express & Suites and the Fairfield Inn & Suites. Confirm it when you book. You will still need transport to the courses.

For a one- to three-month winter stay, YUM rarely makes sense. You will want your own car for the weekly rotation, and the drive from Phoenix is easy.

Flying into Phoenix (PHX)

Phoenix Sky Harbor is the default airport for a Yuma golf trip. It has nonstops from most of the US, the Canadian nonstops listed below, and it is on Arizona time like Yuma, so the clock never changes on the trip.

The drive follows I-10 west, AZ-85 south through Buckeye to Gila Bend, then I-8 west. Fuel up in Gila Bend, because services are thin after that. On the way in you pass Wellton, home of Coyote Wash, about 40 minutes before downtown Yuma, and then the Foothills exits for Las Barrancas and Mesa del Sol. The full road guide, with buses and the shuttle listing, is in Phoenix to Yuma drive.

Flying into San Diego or Palm Springs

Both are slightly shorter drives than Phoenix, and both are on Pacific time. From November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, you lose an hour driving to Yuma: leave San Diego at 9:00 AM Pacific, drive 2 hr 50 min, and you arrive just before 1:00 PM on a Yuma clock. Book your first tee time by the course's clock. The Yuma time zone guide covers the details.

  • San Diego: I-8 east climbs over the mountains, crosses the Imperial Valley and passes the Algodones Dunes. No scheduled shuttle between SAN and Yuma was found. See San Diego to Yuma.
  • Palm Springs: the route runs CA-86 south past the Salton Sea and El Centro, then I-8 east. No scheduled shuttle to Yuma was found.

Canadian nonstops for a Yuma golf trip (winter 2026-27)

There is no nonstop from Canada to Yuma, so for Canadians, getting to Yuma by air always means a connection or a drive. These are the nonstops Google Flights showed on October 23, 2026, with the lowest round-trip fares it displayed in Canadian dollars:

From Phoenix (PHX) Palm Springs (PSP) San Diego (SAN)
CalgaryWestJet daily, 3 hr 10 min, from CA$241WestJet daily, 3 hr 20 min, from CA$488WestJet Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun, 3 hr 25 min, from CA$429
EdmontonWestJet 6 days a week, 3 hr 25 min, from CA$248WestJet Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun, 3 hr 30 min, from CA$401No nonstop
VancouverWestJet and Air Canada daily, 3 hr 2 min, from CA$211WestJet and Air Canada daily, 3 hr 5 min, from CA$266Air Canada daily, 3 hr, from CA$548
SaskatoonWestJet Thu and Sun, 3 hr 25 min, from CA$403No nonstopNot checked
TorontoAir Canada and Porter daily, 4 hr 36 min, from CA$424Air Canada Fri and Sun, 5 hr 32 min, from CA$660Not checked

Most of these fares are for specific January 2027 dates (Calgary to Phoenix CA$241 was for January 7 to 14; Google's typical January range on that route was CA$260 to CA$490). No Flair nonstop appeared on any of these routes, and the Saskatoon route is low-frequency and may be seasonal.

Two things for Canadian snowbirds who fly:

  • Registration. Canadians staying in the US 30 days or longer must be registered. USCIS says anyone issued a Form I-94 is already registered, which is normally the case for air arrivals. Drivers are the ones who usually need to register online.
  • Clocks at home. Vancouver now shows the same time as Yuma all year. Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon are one hour ahead of Yuma all year.

For the full Canadian picture, including day counts and insurance, read Canadian snowbirds in Yuma. If you would rather drive, see Calgary to Yuma drive. If you are weighing a southern Utah winter instead, the St. George flying guide answers the same question there.

Which airport for which golf trip

The right airport depends mostly on how long you are staying:

Trip Best airport Why
1-3 month winter stay from western CanadaPHXCheapest nonstops, same clock, easy drive
Long weekend from the US SouthwestDrive, or PHXYUM fares are high for a short trip
Buddies trip of 3-4 days on AmericanYUMSaves two half-days of driving
Coast plus desert tripSANTwo nights on the coast, then I-8 to Yuma
Palm Springs plus YumaPSPUnder three hours between the two

If you land at Phoenix or San Diego around midday, plan an afternoon round rather than a morning one. At Desert Hills the after-1 PM rate in January to March is $49 with a cart or $40 walking (posted table, seen October 2026), which suits an arrival day. The Desert Hills course guide and the Yuma Golf & Country Club course guide cover the two full 18s closest to the city hotels.

After you land: where to stay and play

Your airport choice also shapes where you sleep. The downtown and 16th Street hotels are 6 to 13 minutes from Desert Hills and Yuma G&CC, while the Foothills hotels and RV parks sit 5 to 8 minutes from Mesa del Sol and 11 to 14 from Las Barrancas. Compare the areas in where to stay in Yuma for golf, and for a ready-made four-round plan, see the Yuma golf trip itinerary.

Plan it on the map

Open the Yuma golf map to see every course and stay with drive times from downtown, then pick the airport that fits your dates. The $30 plan can build the trip day by day around your arrival time, or cover a whole winter stay with a weekly course rotation.
