The Calgary to Yuma drive is about 2,531 km and 23 hr 26 min on Google Maps, south on I-15 through Montana, Idaho and Utah to Las Vegas, then US-95 to Yuma. Most Alberta snowbirds cross at Coutts/Sweetgrass, which is open 24 hours. Allow about three days at eight hours of driving a day, more if winter weather slows I-15.
This guide covers the route, which border crossing to use in winter 2026-27, how to split the drive, where golfers can stop on the way, the Edmonton, Saskatoon and Vancouver versions, and what to do on arrival. Times and distances were read on October 23, 2026.
Quick facts
- Distance and time: 2,531 km, 23 hr 26 min (Google Maps); 2,558.7 km and about 27 hr 48 min free-flow (OSRM).
- Route: I-15 south to Las Vegas, then US-95 via Needles, Blythe and Quartzsite to Yuma.
- Border: Coutts/Sweetgrass on I-15, open 24 hours. Carway runs reduced Canadian-side hours (8 a.m. to 12 a.m.) from Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 14, 2027.
- Days: about three at eight hours a day.
- Edmonton: about 26 hours, 2,860 km. Saskatoon: about 26 hours, 2,835 km.
- Clock: Calgary is one hour ahead of Yuma all year from Nov 1, 2026.
- On arrival: Canadians staying 30 days or longer must be registered with the US government; land-port arrivals without registration evidence register online.
The Calgary to Yuma drive: route and distances
Google's fastest route on October 23, 2026 crossed at Carway/Piegan and used MT-464 to join I-15 in Montana. From there it follows I-15 through Idaho and Utah to Las Vegas, US-95 south to I-40 near Needles, and US-95 south again via Blythe and Quartzsite to Yuma.
Most Alberta drivers use the Coutts/Sweetgrass crossing on I-15 instead, which adds little distance and is open around the clock. The free-flow OSRM router takes a different last leg, via CA-78 through Glamis in California, so your navigation app may offer either.
| From | Google Maps | Distance (Google) | OSRM free-flow | Distance (OSRM) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calgary | 23 hr 26 min | 2,531 km | 27 hr 48 min | 2,558.7 km |
| Edmonton | 26 hr | 2,860 km | 31 hr 14 min | 2,850.7 km |
| Saskatoon | 26 hr (via I-15 S) | 2,835 km | 31 hr 47 min | 2,817.2 km |
| Vancouver | 24 hr (via I-84 E) | 2,484 km | 29 hr 27 min | 2,470.7 km |
Google times include traffic at the moment they were read and are rounded to the hour for the longer routes; OSRM tends to run slower than real interstate driving. Vancouver also has a 25-hour, 2,494 km option via I-5 S.
Coutts vs Carway in winter
| Crossing | Hours | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Coutts, AB / Sweetgrass, MT (I-15) | Open 24 hours, 7 days (CBP) | The default for a winter drive south and back |
| Carway, AB / Piegan, MT | Canadian side 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. daily, Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 14, 2027 (CBSA) | Google's fastest route, but limited hours and conflicting US-side times |
| Del Bonita and Aden | Canadian side 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the same period | Small crossings with short hours |
| Wild Horse | Canadian side 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the same period | Short hours |
The CBSA hours are for entering Canada, so they matter most on the drive home. Published US-side hours at Piegan conflict (the National Park Service says 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. year round; another listing says 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.), so snowbirds driving south in winter are safer using Coutts/Sweetgrass. If you head home before March 14, 2027, Coutts is the simpler choice for the return too.
How many days to allow
Using Google's 23 hr 26 min from Calgary, the split looks like this:
| Plan | Driving per day | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days | About 11 hr 45 min | Two drivers sharing, good weather only |
| 3 days | About 7 hr 50 min | A steady pace for most drivers |
| 4 days | About 5 hr 50 min | Winter weather slack, a golf stop or a towed RV |
That is driving time only; fuel, meals and the border add more. Winter weather in Montana, Idaho and Utah can slow or close I-15, so keep a spare day in the plan. The last leg south of Las Vegas includes long two-lane stretches on US-95, which are best driven in daylight.
Where to stop on the way
The route gives three natural breaks for golfers:
- St. George, Utah and Mesquite, Nevada. Both sit on I-15 north of Las Vegas and both are winter golf towns with their own maps on this site: the St. George golf map and the Mesquite golf map. A night and a round in either breaks the drive, and our Calgary to Mesquite golf trip guide covers that first stretch from Alberta in detail.
- Las Vegas. The obvious overnight before the last leg. From the Las Vegas airport to Yuma is about 4 hr 56 min and 289 miles via US-95 through Needles, Blythe and Quartzsite (Google Maps).
- Blythe or Quartzsite. Towns on US-95 on the final run south, if you want to split the Las Vegas to Yuma leg.
The clock on the way
Alberta stays on UTC-6 all year from November 1, 2026, so Calgary is one hour ahead of Yuma. Nevada uses Pacific time with daylight saving, so in winter (November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027) Las Vegas is one hour behind Yuma. Arizona, including Yuma, Phoenix and Wellton, does not change its clocks. More in the Yuma time zone guide.
Edmonton, Saskatoon and Vancouver versions
- Edmonton: about 26 hours and 2,860 km on Google, roughly 330 km more than from Calgary. Edmontonians also have WestJet nonstops to Phoenix six days a week if they would rather fly.
- Saskatoon: about 26 hours and 2,835 km via I-15 S. Saskatchewan is one hour ahead of Yuma all year.
- Vancouver: about 24 hours and 2,484 km via I-84 E, or 25 hours and 2,494 km via I-5 S. British Columbia now shows the same time as Yuma all year.
If the drive is too much, Calgary has a daily WestJet nonstop to Phoenix (fastest 3 hr 10 min, from CA$241 round trip for January 7-14, 2027 on Google Flights), and Phoenix to Yuma is about 3 hr 14 min by car. Compare in flights to Yuma for golf.
The drive home in spring
Departures from Yuma pick up after Easter, which falls on March 28, 2027. A few things change by then:
- Carway's reduced winter hours run to March 14, 2027. Check its hours after that date before choosing it for the return, and remember that published US-side hours at Piegan conflict.
- Las Vegas moves to daylight time on March 14, 2027, so on the way home it shows the same time as Yuma, while Calgary stays one hour ahead.
- Weather on I-15 in Utah, Idaho and Montana can still slow the trip north, so the spare day is worth keeping.
When you arrive: the rules for drivers
General information, not legal or tax advice.
Canadians staying in the United States for 30 days or longer must be registered with the US government; travel.gc.ca warns that failing to comply can bring penalties, fines and misdemeanor prosecution. USCIS says people issued a Form I-94 (paper or electronic) are already registered, which is normally the case for air arrivals. USCIS lists Canadian visitors who entered at land ports and were not issued registration evidence as not registered; they register online with Form G-325R through a USCIS online account, with no biometrics appointment for Canadians. This matters most for snowbirds who drive to Yuma and stay for the winter.
The Government of Canada's US travel advice also says Canadian visitors can usually stay in the United States for 6 months without a visa. Day counts for US tax and travel medical insurance are covered in our guide for Canadian snowbirds in Yuma.
Where to park the rig, and the first round
- Towing or in a big rig: Comfort Inn & Suites Yuma I-8 in the Foothills lists free parking for vehicles of all sizes, useful for a night before an RV check-in.
- RV resorts: some have rig rules. Fortuna de Oro RV Resort requires RVs of at least 22 feet, fully self-contained and under 10 years old (exceptions at management's discretion). Cocopah Bend RV & Golf Resort has its own 18 holes on the west side. See Yuma RV resorts with golf, or Yuma monthly rentals for snowbirds if you are trading the rig for a condo or park model.
- First round: if you arrive in October, most courses are closed or partly closed for overseed. Mesa del Sol does not overseed and stays open; Desert Hills, the city course, reopened about October 25 in 2024 after closing September 30; its 2026 dates were not published. Check the Yuma golf overseed guide, and the Mesa del Sol and Desert Hills course guides for rates.
Once you are settled, Yuma winter golf covers how the season runs, and the snowbird golf schedule for Yuma sets out a weekly course rotation.
