Canadian snowbirds in Yuma can fly WestJet nonstop to Phoenix and drive about three hours, or drive 23 to 26 hours from Alberta and Saskatchewan. Stays of 30 days or longer require US registration, visitors can usually stay up to six months, and green fees, passes and RV sites are paid in US dollars.

This guide covers the flights and drives from western Canada, the US stay rules that matter for a long winter, the clock and money questions, and a golf plan that fits. The stay and tax rules below are general information, not legal or tax advice.

From the airport, Phoenix is about 3 hr 14 min (189 miles) to Yuma by I-10 and I-8, San Diego about 2 hr 50 min (177 miles) and Palm Springs about 2 hr 48 min (164 miles). Phoenix is on the same clock as Yuma all year; San Diego and Palm Springs are an hour behind from November 1 to March 14. Flying into Yuma itself means a connection: Calgary to Yuma on American takes at least 9 hr 18 min, from CA$934 round trip in early December. Read October 23, 2026. Most Alberta drivers cross at Coutts/Sweetgrass on I-15, which CBP lists as open 24 hours. The CBSA has cut traveller hours at Carway to 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, which matters on the drive home. Winter weather in Montana, Idaho and Utah can slow or close I-15. Route, stops and border detail are in the Calgary to Yuma drive guide.

US stay rules for Canadian snowbirds

General information, not legal or tax advice. Rules change; check the official sources (travel.gc.ca, USCIS and the IRS) or an adviser before you go.

The six-month visitor limit

The Government of Canada's US travel advice says Canadian visitors can usually stay in the United States for 6 months without a visa, and must apply to USCIS before that time runs out to stay longer. A border officer who suspects you spend more time in the US than in Canada can require you to prove you are a temporary visitor. The often-quoted 182-day figure is shorthand for this roughly six-month limit.

The 30-day registration rule

Canadians staying in the United States for 30 days or longer must be registered with the US government; travel.gc.ca warns that failing to comply can bring penalties, fines and misdemeanor prosecution.

  • USCIS says people issued a Form I-94 (paper or electronic) are already registered, which is normally the case for air arrivals.
  • USCIS lists Canadian visitors who entered at land ports and were not issued registration evidence as not registered; they register online with Form G-325R through a USCIS online account, with no biometrics appointment for Canadians.

This matters most for snowbirds who drive to Yuma and stay for the winter.

Day counts and US tax

The IRS substantial presence test is met if you are in the US at least 31 days in the current year and 183 days over three years, counting all days this year, one-third of last year's days and one-sixth of the days from the year before.

Days in the US each year This year + 1/3 of last year + 1/6 of the year before Total
90 (about 3 months)903015135
120 (about 4 months)1204020180
150 (about 5 months)1505025225

A snowbird who spends about four months a year in Yuma every year stays just under 183; longer winters can cross it. Someone who meets the test can still be treated as a nonresident under the closer connection exception if they were in the US fewer than 183 days in the current year, kept a tax home in Canada and have a closer connection to Canada, by filing IRS Form 8840 by the return due date. This is general information, not tax advice; check with a cross-border tax adviser.

Travel medical insurance

The Government of Canada advises travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and hospital stays in the United States; provincial plans may pay little or nothing for care abroad, and never up front. Alberta Health Care reimburses only insured emergency services outside Canada at Alberta rates (hospital inpatient CA$100 a day, outpatient CA$50 a day) and strongly recommends travel medical insurance. BC and Saskatchewan rules were not checked for this guide, so check with your own province.

Clocks and money

For Canadian visitors, the clock picture changed in 2026. Yuma keeps Mountain Standard Time all year, and for winter 2026-27:

  • British Columbia has stayed on UTC-7 since March 8, 2026, so Vancouver shows the same time as Yuma all year.
  • Alberta stays on UTC-6 from November 1, 2026 under its Official Time Act, so Calgary and Edmonton are one hour ahead of Yuma all winter. In earlier winters they matched Yuma.
  • Saskatchewan is one hour ahead of Yuma all year; Ontario is two hours ahead in winter.

Tee times and check-ins in Yuma never shift, but a call home to Calgary in January is an hour later there. Details are in our Yuma time zone guide. Green fees, passes and RV rates are in US dollars, so check the current exchange rate when comparing a winter in Yuma with other options.

If you cross into Los Algodones for dental or pharmacy visits, bring the passport you entered the US with: Canadians re-entering by land need a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card.

A golf plan for a Canadian winter in Yuma

When: arrive in early November, when most courses are back on fresh rye after overseed, or by December. Peak season runs January to March, and departures pick up after Easter (March 28, 2027). A stay of about four months, December to March, sits inside the six-month visitor limit, but run your own day count for tax. How the whole season works, from arrival to April, is in Yuma winter golf.

Where to base: the Foothills for Mesa del Sol and Las Barrancas, or the city side for Desert Hills. RV options such as Fortuna de Oro RV Resort and Caravan Oasis sit 6 to 8 minutes from Mesa del Sol; see Yuma RV resorts with golf and Yuma monthly rentals for snowbirds.

What to buy: there is no Yuma-wide pass. A Mesa del Sol six-month pass ($3,500 US for 2026-27, cart and range included) suits a Foothills regular; Desert Hills' 10-play cards ($500 walking or $650 with a cart, January to March) suit the city side. Compare them in the Yuma golf passes guide.

How to book: Las Barrancas opens 7 days ahead, Desert Hills 8 days ahead at midnight, and Mesa del Sol about 14 days online. Rotate around league mornings using the snowbird golf schedule for Yuma. Course details are in the Mesa del Sol and Desert Hills course guides.

Most Canadians fly nonstop to Phoenix, about 3 hr 14 min (189 miles) from Yuma by car, or to San Diego or Palm Springs.

Do Canadian snowbirds need to register with the US government?

Will a winter in Yuma make me a US tax resident?

It can if you stay long enough. The IRS substantial presence test counts all days this year, one-third of last year's and one-sixth of the year before; 183 or more (with at least 31 this year) meets it. Four months a year every year (120 + 40 + 20 = 180 days) stays just under. The closer connection exception (Form 8840) may still apply. This is general information, not tax advice; check with a cross-border tax adviser.

What time is it in Yuma compared with Alberta and BC?

Yuma stays on Mountain Standard Time all year. From Nov 1, 2026, Alberta stays on UTC-6, so Calgary and Edmonton are one hour ahead of Yuma all year. British Columbia stays on UTC-7 all year, the same as Yuma. Saskatchewan is one hour ahead all year.

Can I pay for Yuma golf in Canadian dollars?

Green fees, passes and RV rates in Yuma are in US dollars, so check the current CAD/USD rate when budgeting. Mesa del Sol's 2026-27 pass terms add $50 for cheques drawn on a Canadian bank.

Do I need travel medical insurance for a winter in Yuma?

The Government of Canada advises travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and hospital stays in the United States, because provincial plans may pay little or nothing for care abroad, and never up front.
