San Diego to Yuma is a single road: I-8 east, about 177 miles and 2 hours 50 minutes from San Diego International Airport. The drive climbs over the mountains east of the city, crosses the Imperial Valley and the Algodones Dunes, and in winter you lose an hour at the Arizona line, so a midday start puts you in Yuma mid-afternoon on a Yuma clock.
This guide covers the drive, the time change, the stops worth making and how to build a coast-plus-desert golf trip that starts at SAN. Times and fares were read on October 23, 2026.
Quick facts
- Distance and time: 177 miles, 2 hr 50 min from SAN (Google); 191 minutes and 172.2 miles free-flow from the airport (OSRM). Downtown San Diego to Yuma is 169.4 miles and about 3 hr 6 min free-flow.
- Route: I-8 east all the way.
- Time change: Yuma is one hour ahead of San Diego from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027; the same clock the rest of the year.
- No scheduled shuttle from SAN to Yuma was found. Rent a car.
- Canadian nonstops to SAN: WestJet from Calgary five days a week, Air Canada from Vancouver daily.
The San Diego to Yuma drive
The route from San Diego to Yuma could not be simpler. From San Diego International, get on I-8 east and stay on it.
| Section | What you will see |
|---|---|
| San Diego east | I-8 climbs over the mountains east of the city |
| Imperial Valley | The road crosses the valley past El Centro |
| Algodones Dunes | I-8 crosses the dunes on the California side |
| Colorado River | The road crosses into Arizona and Yuma |
Two numbers are worth knowing. Google's 2 hr 50 min reading included the traffic at the time it was read, and the free-flow router, which tends to run slow on interstates, gave 191 minutes. Either way you are looking at about three hours, with a break.
The time change on the way to Yuma
Arizona does not use daylight saving time. California does. So from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, and again from November 7, 2027, Yuma is one hour ahead of San Diego. From March 14 to November 7, 2027 the clocks match.
What that means for a winter arrival:
| Leave SAN (Pacific) | Drive | Arrive Yuma (Pacific) | Yuma clock |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:00 AM | 2 hr 50 min | 10:50 AM | 11:50 AM |
| 10:00 AM | 2 hr 50 min | 12:50 PM | 1:50 PM |
| 12:00 PM | 2 hr 50 min | 2:50 PM | 3:50 PM |
Tee times in Yuma run on Arizona time. If you book a 1:00 PM start from San Diego, make sure it is 1:00 PM in Yuma, which is noon in San Diego in winter. Phones near the Colorado River and the border can pick up a California or Mexican tower and show the wrong local time, so check the clock when you arrive. Full detail is in the Yuma time zone guide.
Stops between San Diego and Yuma
Two stops sit close to I-8 on the California side, both on Pacific time:
- Algodones Dunes. The BLM's Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area lies along I-8 west of Yuma. Short day-use stops at Osborne Overlook, the Plank Road site, Buttercup Ranger Station and the Watchable Wildlife Area need no permit, so a look at the dunes is free. See Imperial Sand Dunes from Yuma.
- Andrade and Los Algodones. Just before Yuma, CA-186 runs about 2 miles south of I-8 to the Andrade port of entry, opposite Los Algodones, Mexico. It is a day trip in its own right, with documents to sort out first, so save it for later in your stay: Los Algodones day trip.
A coast-plus-desert golf trip from San Diego
San Diego works well as the start of a trip that ends in the desert. Fly into SAN, spend a night or two on the coast, then drive east for the golf. This guide does not cover San Diego's own courses; the Yuma half is below.
Day 1: land at SAN. Rent a car at the airport. Stay on the coast.
Day 2: drive to Yuma and play an afternoon round. Leave San Diego by about 9:00 AM Pacific and you reach Yuma around 1:00 PM Yuma time. That suits an afternoon rate:
| Course | Where | Price seen (October 2026) | Drive from downtown Yuma |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cocopah Bend | West side of town | Rates by phone only (928-343-1663) | 12 min, 5.5 mi |
| Desert Hills | Central Yuma | Jan-Mar after 1 PM: $49 ride, $40 walk | 11 min, 5.2 mi |
| Arroyo Dunes Par 3 | Central Yuma | Jan-Mar: 18 holes $30 ride, $20 walk | 9 min, 4.5 mi |
| Yuma Golf & Country Club | By the airport | Public rates not posted | 10 min, 4.9 mi |
Desert Hills and Arroyo Dunes figures are the city's posted January to March table (seen October 2026); the November and December 2026 tables were not posted. Cocopah Bend and Yuma G&CC do not publish rates, so call. The Desert Hills course guide and the Cocopah Bend course guide have the details.
Days 3 to 5: the Foothills. Spend the rest of the trip on the two Foothills headliners, Mesa del Sol and Las Barrancas, about 21 and 26 minutes east of downtown. Mesa del Sol sells times online about 14 days ahead; Las Barrancas opens its sheet 7 days ahead and charges $65 with a cart (posted, seen October 2026). The Las Barrancas course guide and Mesa del Sol course guide cover tees and booking rules.
Last day: drive back to SAN. You gain an hour heading west in winter. Leave Yuma at noon on a Yuma clock and, after 2 hr 50 min, it is about 1:50 PM in San Diego. That leaves room for an afternoon flight, but allow time to return the car.
Where to stay at the end of the drive
Coming from San Diego to Yuma, the downtown hotels by the river are the first ones you reach, and they suit a west-side or city-course trip. Rates below are the lowest public rates seen on October 23, 2026, before tax; they change, and the 2027 peak is only partly priced.
| Stay | Area | Rate seen | Drive to Desert Hills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton Garden Inn Yuma Pivot Point | Downtown riverfront | From $135 (Wed Jan 13, 2027); from $189 (Wed Feb 17, 2027) | 13 min |
| Home2 Suites Yuma Pivot Point | Downtown riverfront | From $159 (Wed Feb 17, 2027) | 13 min |
| Historic Coronado Motor Hotel | Downtown, 4th Ave | About $68-$88 (Wed Feb 17, 2027, Kayak) | 11 min |
The two Pivot Point hotels are about 14 minutes from Cocopah Bend and 27 minutes from Las Barrancas. The Hilton Garden Inn has its own restaurant and bar; Home2 Suites has kitchens and free breakfast. If most of your golf is in the Foothills, keep driving: the Foothills hotels and RV parks sit about 5 to 8 minutes from Mesa del Sol. Where to stay in Yuma for golf compares the areas.
Flying into San Diego from Canada
San Diego can be the arrival airport for Canadians heading to Yuma, though Phoenix has more nonstops. On October 23, 2026, Google Flights showed:
| From | Nonstop to SAN | Fastest | Lowest round trip seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calgary | WestJet, Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun | 3 hr 25 min | CA$429 (Jan 16-22, 2027) |
| Vancouver | Air Canada, daily | 3 hr | CA$548 (Jan 14-18, 2027) |
| Edmonton | None (fastest connection 5 hr 55 min) | - | - |
Compare that with Phoenix, where WestJet's Calgary nonstop showed from CA$241 and runs daily. San Diego to Yuma is a slightly shorter drive than the Phoenix to Yuma drive, but it adds the time change. The full airport comparison is in flights to Yuma for golf.
When to make the drive
The best Yuma golf months for this trip are November, once the courses are back on fresh rye after the fall overseed, and January to April. From May to September Yuma highs run from the mid-90s to about 107F, and golf becomes a dawn activity. See best time to golf in Yuma for the month-by-month view.
If you are already spending the winter in Yuma and want to go the other way, the San Diego weekend from Yuma guide covers a two-night break on the coast.
