Map of the courses in this guide: A San Diego Weekend from Yuma: A Two-Night Break for Winter Golfers

A San Diego weekend from Yuma is an easy two-night break: about 177 miles and 2 hours 50 minutes west on I-8, with no border to cross. In winter you gain an hour on the way there, because San Diego is on Pacific time, and lose it coming back. The planning that matters is on the Yuma side: which weekend to pick and what to do about your tee times.

Many Yuma snowbirds use San Diego as a two- or three-night break. This guide covers the drive, the clock, the best weekends to go and how to leave your golf week in order. Times were read on October 23, 2026.

Quick facts

  • Drive: 177 miles and 2 hr 50 min to San Diego International (Google, I-8 west); about 169 miles and 3 hr 6 min free-flow to downtown San Diego.
  • Clock: San Diego is one hour behind Yuma from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027; the same from March 14, 2027.
  • Border: none. I-8 stays in the US.
  • Length: two or three nights is the common pattern.
  • Before you leave: cancel or move weekend tee times by each course's deadline (24 to 48 hours at the Foothills courses).

The drive for a San Diego weekend from Yuma

I-8 west takes you over the Colorado River into California, across the Algodones Dunes and the Imperial Valley, then over the mountains east of San Diego. No scheduled shuttle between Yuma and the San Diego airport was found, so this is a drive.

Here is how the clock works on a winter San Diego weekend from Yuma:

Leg Leave Drive Arrive (local)
Friday, Yuma to San Diego9:00 AM Yuma2 hr 50 min10:50 AM in San Diego
Sunday, San Diego to Yuma2:00 PM San Diego2 hr 50 min5:50 PM in Yuma

Going west you arrive before lunch. Coming back, remember that winter sunset in Yuma is around 5:30 PM, so a 2:00 PM start from San Diego puts the last stretch after dark; leave earlier if you want daylight the whole way. Google's drive time included the traffic when it was read, so allow some extra.

A phone near the Colorado River can pick up a California tower and show the wrong time. The Yuma time zone guide explains it.

Picking the weekend

For a San Diego weekend from Yuma, the coast is the same any weekend; what you miss in Yuma is not. These are the dated events and closures in the 2026-27 season:

The organizer's sponsorship package gives Midnight at the Oasis as March 4-7, 2027, so confirm the dates. For the full March picture, see Yuma golf in March.

Before you leave: tee times, leagues and passes

The cost of a weekend away is usually a missed booking. From January to March the Yuma tee sheets are at their busiest, so cancel properly and give the time back.

League days. If you play in a winter league, tell the organizer. Mesa del Sol's Men's Association plays Fridays from 11:00 AM, Las Barrancas has its Tuesday Silver League, and the men's club at Cocopah Bend plays Mondays, November to March. A Friday-to-Sunday trip misses the Friday game; a Saturday-to-Monday trip misses Monday's.

Passes. A season pass keeps running while you are away, so pick a weekend when you would have played less anyway. Mesa del Sol's 2026-27 6-month individual pass is $3,500, which you are paying for whether or not you play that Saturday. The Mesa del Sol course guide and Las Barrancas course guide list the booking rules in full.

Book Monday now. If you want to play the day after you get back, book it before you leave. Las Barrancas opens times 7 days out and Mesa del Sol about 14 days out, so Monday's time is already on the sheet.

A sample San Diego weekend from Yuma

FridayEarly round if you want one, then leave by about 11:00 AM Yuma timeArrive about 12:50 PM San Diego time
Saturday-Full day on the coast
SundayArrive about 4:50 PM Yuma time if you leave at 1:00 PMLeave by about 1:00 PM San Diego time

A Friday round before the drive works if you take one of the first times. At Desert Hills that is sunrise or 6:00 AM MST, whichever is later, though winter mornings are chilly (about 48F on average in January). Leaving San Diego at 1:00 PM instead of 2:00 PM on Sunday gets you back before the roughly 5:30 PM winter sunset.

Canadians: the weekend still counts as US days

A San Diego weekend from Yuma never leaves the United States, so for Canadian snowbirds those nights still count toward the roughly six-month limit on visitor stays and toward the IRS substantial presence day count. If you are tracking days, include the coast trip. Canadian snowbirds in Yuma explains both counts.

What to pack

No border, no special documents, but a few things are easy to forget:

  • Clothes for cooler mornings. Yuma's December and January lows average about 47F to 48F at the airfield. Our sources do not include San Diego weather, so check a forecast for the coast before you pack.
  • Your passport, only if you add Algodones. A regular driver's license alone will not get you back across from Los Algodones; see the Los Algodones day trip.
  • Golf clubs, if you plan to play on the coast. This guide does not cover San Diego courses or rates.
  • A clock set to Yuma time for Sunday. Your Monday tee time is on Arizona time.

Stops on the way

The Imperial Sand Dunes lie along I-8 west of Yuma, and short day-use stops such as Osborne Overlook and the Plank Road site need no permit, so a look at the dunes can break up the drive. They are on Pacific time; see Imperial Sand Dunes from Yuma.

Using San Diego to start or end a winter

San Diego can also be the airport for the whole season. WestJet flies Calgary to San Diego nonstop five days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun), and Air Canada flies Vancouver to San Diego daily (Google Flights, October 2026). Land, spend two nights on the coast, then drive to Yuma; or end the winter with a coast weekend and fly home from SAN. The San Diego to Yuma guide covers the arrival drive.

If you are setting up a winter routine around breaks like this, the snowbird golf schedule for Yuma shows how to plan the weeks, and Yuma tee times in winter covers getting good times back when you return.

Plan it on the map

Open the Yuma golf map to see every course and stay with drive times from downtown. The $30 plan can cover a whole winter stay with a weekly course rotation, so you can see which weeks have room for a coast break.

Questions golfers ask

How far is San Diego from Yuma?

Google Maps gave 2 hr 50 min and 177 miles from Yuma to San Diego International Airport via I-8 west (read October 23, 2026). A free-flow router put downtown San Diego at 169.4 miles and about 3 hr 6 min.

Is San Diego on a different time than Yuma?

In winter, yes. San Diego is one hour behind Yuma from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027. You gain an hour driving west and lose it on the way back. From March 14, 2027 the two clocks match.

Is a weekend enough for San Diego from Yuma?

Many Yuma snowbirds use San Diego as a two- or three-night break. With about three hours of driving each way, two nights gives you one full day on the coast plus two half-days.

Do I need a passport to drive from Yuma to San Diego?

No border is crossed: I-8 runs from Arizona into California. You would only need border documents if you add a stop in Los Algodones through the Andrade crossing.

Which weekends should I avoid leaving Yuma?

That depends on what you would miss. Midnight at the Oasis is March 5-7, 2027 and the free MCAS Yuma Airshow is Saturday, March 13, 2027. If you play Mesa del Sol on Saturdays, it is closed for outside scrambles on November 7 and December 5, 2026, which makes those good weekends to be away.

Can I cancel my Yuma tee times for the weekend?

Yes, but each course has its own rule. Las Barrancas needs 24 hours' notice by phone or the whole group is charged; Mesa del Sol's online times need 48 hours' notice, with refunds as a gift card. Cancel before you leave.
