Coyote Wash golf course is the Town of Wellton's 18-hole municipal desert course, about 40 minutes east of downtown Yuma on I-8 (about 25 from the Foothills). The town's 2026-27 price list caps 18 holes with a cart at $70, sells a season pass from $2,500 and a $600 ten-play punch card. Winter visitors drive out mainly for easier tee times when Yuma is busy.
It is a short course, quiet by Yuma standards, with mountain views and a clubhouse grill. This guide covers the rates, passes, tees, overseed timing and how to build a day around it, with the town's second course, Butterfield, two miles away.

Why winter golfers drive to Coyote Wash
The main reason is tee times. From January to March the Yuma and Foothills courses carry leagues, passholders and the bulk of the winter visitors, and morning times go first. Coyote Wash sits far enough east that it does not feel that pressure in the same way, and a GolfPass reviewer in 2023 said tee times were easy to get. It works as the backup course on the weeks when Mesa del Sol and the other Foothills courses are full.
The second reason is price. A transferable punch card works out at $60 a round with a cart against the $70 maximum rack rate, and the $2,500 season pass costs less than Mesa del Sol's $3,500 six-month pass (which includes a cart). More on that below.
The course is part of a housing development below the east slopes of the Gila Mountains, and the gated Rancho El Mirage retirement community lines holes 12 to 14. It is not a separate course, even though some lists name it as one.
Drive times from where Yuma golfers stay
These are routed estimates from the site's drive data, not live traffic.
| Starting point | Drive to Coyote Wash |
|---|---|
| Comfort Inn & Suites Yuma I-8 (Foothills) | 25 min, 19.8 mi |
| Best Western Plus Yuma Foothills | 25 min, 19.7 mi |
| Mesa del Sol condos | 25 min, 19.0 mi |
| Fortuna de Oro RV Resort | 26 min, 18.6 mi |
| Westwind RV & Golf Resort | 26 min, 20.6 mi |
| Holiday Inn Express & Suites Yuma | 35 min, 28.0 mi |
| Downtown Yuma | 39 min, 32.3 mi |
| Cocopah Bend RV & Golf Resort (west side) | 52 min, 37.9 mi |
If you are based in the Foothills, Coyote Wash is about as far as Desert Hills in town (19 to 27 minutes from the same Foothills stays) and closer than Cocopah Bend on the west side (30 to 36 minutes). From the west side of Yuma it is close to an hour each way, which is a lot for one round.
Coyote Wash golf course rates for 2026-27
The town publishes a brochure price list for the fiscal year July 2026 to June 2027. It gives maximum rates and says seasonal rates fluctuate, with no peak dates printed. Winter is the likely peak, but that is not stated.
| Item | Price (seen October 2026) |
|---|---|
| 18 holes with cart (maximum) | $70 |
| 18 holes with your own private cart (maximum) | $65 |
| Replay | $15 |
| Live online rate, Oct 28 and 30, 2026 | $45 (18 or 9 holes) |
| Cart rental | $17 |
| Rental clubs (bag and clubs) | $32 |
| Range, 32 balls | $8 |
| Ages 17 and under | Free |
| Summer and twilight rates | Not published |
The $45 online price showed only on a handful of late-day slots whose listed times fell after sunset, so treat those slot times as unreliable and phone the shop if a time looks odd. No resident rate is published, and 2027 peak rates are not posted beyond the stated maximum. Rates change, so confirm before you go.
Season passes and punch cards
For anyone staying the winter in the Foothills, these are the numbers that matter.
| Pass (FY 2026-27 brochure) | Single | Couple |
|---|---|---|
| Season pass, October reopening to April 30 | $2,500 | $3,500 |
| Annual pass, July 1 to June 30 | $2,800 | $3,800 |
| 10-play punch card with cart (transferable) | $600 | n/a |
| 10-play punch card with private cart | $550 | n/a |
| Private cart trail fee pass | $100 per cart | n/a |
| Range: monthly / season / annual | $125 / $425 / $475 | n/a |
The punch card is the simple choice for most visitors: $60 a round with a cart, and a group can share it because it is transferable. The season pass costs the same as about 36 rounds at the $70 maximum, about a round and a half a week from the late-October reopening to April 30, so it pays for itself if Coyote Wash is your home course rather than an occasional change.
Read the terms before you buy. The course website still shows the older 2025-26 wording, where season and annual passes were non-transferable and covered green fees only, with carts extra (or your own cart with the trail fee). If that carries over, add cart costs to the comparison. The 2026-27 terms may differ, so ask the shop. Passes and punch cards cannot be used for tournament fees. For how this compares with every other course, see our Yuma golf passes guide.
The layout and tees
Coyote Wash golf course is short. The back tees play 6,089 yards and the slope tops out at 114 for men, so most handicaps can play the Blue tees. GolfPass reviewers mention the undulating greens and the bunkers as the main challenge.
| Tee | Yards | Men rating / slope | Women rating / slope | Par (M / W) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | 6,089 | 68.2 / 114 | n/a | 70 |
| White | 5,649 | 65.3 / 107 | 71.1 / 115 | 70 / 72 |
| Red | 4,663 | 62.7 / 96 | 66.5 / 105 | 70 / 72 |
The Red yardage comes from the USGA ratings file. The course site and GolfPass list the forward tee at 4,775 yards, so it may have been re-measured or moved.
Expect mixed reports on conditions. GolfPass shows 3.9 out of 5 from 495 reviews: some praise the greens, others mention slow greens, long fairway grass and poor bunker sand. Turf types are not published.
The Coyote Wash course guide has the tee details on the map.
Overseed: when Coyote Wash closes in the fall
Like most Yuma-area courses, Coyote Wash golf course overseeds with rye for the winter, but neither the course nor the town published 2026 dates (checked October 23, 2026), and the Arizona Golf Association's 2026 list shows its overseed as unknown.
The last published schedule, in the Yuma Sun on September 28, 2024, had Coyote Wash closed from September 30 to about October 25. In 2026 the online tee sheet was empty for October 23 to 27 apart from a few late slots on October 28 to 30, which fits a similar late-October reopening. That is unconfirmed, so call 928-785-4653 before you go. If you need a round in early October, Mesa del Sol does not overseed (AGA 2026 list) and stays open; our Yuma golf overseed guide lists the rest.
Booking and league mornings
Coyote Wash golf course takes bookings online, by phone or through GolfNow, and the windows differ.
- Online: TeeItUp releases times about 14 days out. On October 23, 2026 the engine said November 7 times opened on October 24 at 12:00 AM. It showed a 24-hour cancellation policy, and you pay at the course, not online.
- Phone or GolfNow: the town brochure says up to 7 days in advance. Check online first, since it opens a week earlier.
- League shotguns in season: Tuesday men at 9:00, Wednesday women at 9:30, Friday skins at 9:00 and Sunday couples at 9:00. Monday, Thursday and Saturday are the open mornings.
- Closures: the town says the course may close to open play for maintenance, outings and community events.

A day plan for Coyote Wash from Yuma
A Wellton day built around Coyote Wash golf course works best on a Monday, Thursday or Saturday, when there is no league shotgun.
- Morning: drive out on I-8. The pro shop opens at 7 am and the Coyote Den grill serves breakfast from 7 am in season (October to April). Book an early tee time online.
- Warm-up: there is a driving range ($8 for 32 balls) plus putting greens and a chipping area. Cart rental is $17 if you are not on an 18-hole rate that includes one.
- Lunch: the Coyote Den serves breakfast and lunch to 2:30 pm, with a patio and views.
- Afternoon: play nine or 18 at Butterfield, the town's par-3 course about two miles away. On the latest posted (2025-26) sheet it cost $24 for 18 or $21 for 9 after 1 PM. Book by phone up to 3 days ahead and note that rentals must be back by 4 pm. Our Butterfield golf course guide has the details.
- Back to Yuma: about 25 minutes to the Foothills.
If the group wants a second full 18, a $15 replay at Coyote Wash beats the drive back. Kids 17 and under play free at both Wellton courses, which makes it an easy family day.
Who Coyote Wash suits
- Foothills-based snowbirds who want a change from Las Barrancas and Mesa del Sol, or a backup in February and March.
- Value hunters with a punch card, especially groups who can share one.
- Mid and high handicaps who prefer a shorter course with a 114 slope from the tips.
- Families, since juniors play free.
It suits less well if you want a long championship test, if you need perfect conditioning, or if you are staying on the west side of Yuma. For more on the town itself, see Wellton AZ golf, and for building it into a week of golf, the snowbird golf schedule for Yuma. The Butterfield course page has the map details for the second Wellton course.
