Butterfield Golf Course in Wellton is the town's 18-hole municipal par 3, about 2,700 yards, two miles from Coyote Wash and about 40 minutes east of downtown Yuma on I-8. The latest posted town fees are $30 for 18 holes before 1 PM and $24 after, with punch cards at $22 a round. It is walkable, cheap and booked by phone.
Butterfield is easy to overlook because it has no website of its own, no online tee sheet and no restaurant. For a winter visitor that is no great loss: it costs little and it pairs neatly with a morning at Coyote Wash.

What Butterfield golf course in Wellton is
The Town of Wellton runs two courses: Coyote Wash, the regulation 18 in a housing development, and Butterfield, an 18-hole par-3 course on Dome Street in the middle of Wellton. The town describes Butterfield's front nine as winding around several ponds and the back nine as gently sloping and lined with trees, and says it is good for walking.
At about 2,700 yards for 18 holes, an average of 150 yards a hole, it is longer than the par-3 courses in Yuma, so expect more irons than wedges. There is one set of tees and no USGA course rating. The designer and opening year are not published.
How it compares with Yuma's par-3 courses
| Course | Holes / par | Length | Posted price | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Butterfield, Wellton | 18 / 54 | about 2,700 yd | $30 (18) or $23 (9) before 1 PM; $24 / $21 after (2025-26) | Phone, 3 days |
| Arroyo Dunes Par 3, Yuma | 18 / 54 | 2,174 yd | $20 walking or $30 riding for 18, Jan-Mar | Phone only |
| Foothills Par 3, Foothills | 9 / 27 | 1,040 yd (Black) | $20 for 9; night golf $20 | Online, 7 days |
All prices were seen in October 2026 and change by season. Arroyo Dunes reopened on December 13, 2025 after new irrigation, and the Foothills Par 3 is the only one of the three with lighted night golf (Tuesday to Saturday). If you are based in Yuma rather than the Foothills, the Arroyo Dunes par 3 guide and the Foothills par 3 guide cover the closer options.
Status: is Butterfield open?
Official sources say yes. The Town of Wellton course page, read on October 23, 2026, lists current staff and pro shop hours and says the course is open to the public, and an October 22, 2026 town news item mentions the "Butterfield parks and Golf Department". One online scorecard site labels the course closed, but no official source supports that.
What is missing is a current price list. The town's fee link still served the FY 2025-26 sheet (July 2025 to June 2026) when it was rechecked in October 2026, and no FY 2026-27 sheet was found. Prices below may have gone up, so phone 928-785-4030 before you rely on them.

| 9 holes before 1 PM | $23 |
| 18 holes after 1 PM | $24 |
| 9 holes after 1 PM | $21 |
| Golf cart, 18 / 9 holes | $16 / $12 |
| Handcart | $4 |
| Rental clubs and bag | $8 |
| Ages 17 and under | Free |
| 10-round punch card, 18 holes (transferable) | $220 |
| 10-round punch card, 9 holes (transferable) | $190 |

| Annual pass, July to June (non-transferable) | $825 single, $1,450 couple |
| Personal cart trail fee | $3 daily, $55 monthly, $170 season, $200 annual |
There is one rate all year on this sheet, with no separate winter or summer price. Green fees do not include rentals, and passes and punch cards cannot be used for tournament fees. The punch cards on this sheet were valid July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026, so a 2026-27 card will be a new purchase.
The sheet also lists range prices (bag refills and baskets, plus monthly, season and annual range passes). The range and trail-fee figures were read from a PDF with a broken layout, so confirm them at the shop.
When a Butterfield pass pays for itself
- Punch card: $220 for ten 18-hole rounds is $22 a round, against $30 in the morning. It is transferable, so two players can share it.
- Season pass: $580 equals about 19 morning rounds at $30, or 24 afternoon rounds at $24. Over an October-to-April season that is less than one round a week.
- Couple: $1,000 for two people is $500 each, about 17 morning rounds apiece.
If you mostly play full-length courses and use Butterfield as an occasional warm-up, the punch card is the better buy. For every course's passes side by side, see the Yuma golf passes guide, and for other low-cost rounds, cheap golf in Yuma.
Booking and practical details
- Tee times: phone only, 928-785-4030, during operating hours and up to 3 days in advance. No online booking was found.

- Rentals: must be back by 4 pm.

- Food: no restaurant is mentioned. Coyote Wash's Coyote Den grill (October to April, breakfast and lunch to 2:30 pm) is the nearest clubhouse food.
- Overseed: the town has not published an overseed or closure schedule, and the Arizona Golf Association's 2026 list shows Butterfield's overseed as unknown. Call before an October visit.
- Clock: Wellton is on Arizona time, the same as Yuma all year.
Pairing Butterfield with Coyote Wash
The two Wellton courses are about two miles apart, which makes a 36-hole day easy:
- Morning at Coyote Wash. Book online (about 14 days ahead; the town brochure says 7 days by phone or GolfNow) on a Monday, Thursday or Saturday to miss the league shotguns. The FY 2026-27 maximum is $70 with a cart.
- Lunch at the Coyote Den, open to 2:30 pm in season.
- Afternoon at Butterfield. After 1 PM the 2025-26 sheet charged $24 for 18 or $21 for 9. Phone up to 3 days ahead, and allow enough time to finish, since rentals are due back by 4 pm.
On those numbers, a full Wellton day of 18 regulation holes with a cart and 18 par-3 holes costs about $94 at most before any cart at Butterfield, less with a Coyote Wash punch card ($60 a round). Both courses let players 17 and under play free. The Coyote Wash golf course guide covers the bigger course in detail, and Wellton AZ golf covers the town.

Who Butterfield suits
- Short-game practice: a full 18 of par 3s with ponds in play is a good test of iron distances. For a range-heavy winter, our Yuma driving range guide lists the other practice options.
- Budget golfers: at $22 to $30 a round on the latest sheet, it is one of the cheapest 18-hole rounds in the Yuma area.
- Walkers: the town calls it good for walking, and handcarts are $4.
- Families and beginners: players 17 and under play free, and every hole is a par 3.
- Wellton winter residents: the $580 season pass is the lowest season-pass price published for any course in the Yuma area.
It is not the place for a long test of driving, and anyone who wants online booking or a clubhouse lunch should plan to combine it with Coyote Wash. The Butterfield course page and the Coyote Wash course page have the map details for both.
Plan it on the map
Butterfield and Coyote Wash sit together on the Wellton signpost east of Yuma on the 3D map. The plan can cover a whole winter stay with a weekly rotation, and a Wellton day with both courses fits neatly on a league-free morning.
