Locator map: Wellton AZ golf: two town courses east of Yuma on I-8

Golf in Wellton, AZ means two town-owned courses about 40 minutes east of downtown Yuma on I-8 (about 25 minutes from the Foothills): Coyote Wash, a short desert 18 with season passes from $2,500, and Butterfield, an 18-hole par 3 at $24 to $30 a round. Both let kids play free, Coyote Wash has busy league mornings in winter, and together they make a cheap 36-hole day.

Wellton is a small town with its own winter community. The gated Rancho El Mirage retirement community is built along holes 12 to 14 of Coyote Wash, and both courses sell season passes timed for the October-to-April visitors. For Yuma-based golfers it is the backup when the city and Foothills tee sheets fill up in February and March.

Quick facts

  • Two courses, both run by the Town of Wellton, about 2 miles apart.
  • Drive: about 40 minutes east of downtown Yuma on I-8 (routed 39 minutes, 32 miles), about 25 minutes from the Foothills.
  • Coyote Wash: up to $70 with cart for FY 2026-27; season pass $2,500 single.
  • Butterfield: $30 for 18 before 1 PM, $24 after (FY 2025-26 sheet, the latest posted).
  • Golfers 17 and under play free at both.
  • Arizona time, the same clock as Yuma all year.

Getting to the Wellton AZ golf courses from Yuma

Wellton sits on I-8 east of the Fortuna Foothills, so the drive is all interstate. The map's routed estimates:

From Coyote Wash Butterfield
Downtown Yuma39 min, 32.3 mi41 min, 33.2 mi
Comfort Inn & Suites Yuma I-8 (Foothills)25 min, 19.8 mi27 min, 20.6 mi
Fortuna de Oro RV Resort (Foothills)26 min, 18.6 mi28 min, 19.4 mi
Hampton Inn & Suites Yuma (16th St)36 min, 29.7 mi38 min, 30.6 mi
Cocopah Bend RV & Golf Resort (west Yuma)52 min, 37.9 mi54 min, 38.8 mi

From a Foothills base like the Comfort Inn or Fortuna de Oro, Wellton is a 25-minute hop. From the west side of Yuma it is closer to an hour. There are no Wellton hotels or RV parks on our map, so most visitors day-trip. Wellton keeps Arizona time like Yuma and Phoenix, so a tee time there never shifts with the California clock change.

Coyote Wash Golf Course

Coyote Wash, also listed as The Links at Coyote Wash, opened in 2003 as part of a housing development below the east slopes of the Gila Mountains. The official site credits Gary Panks Associates. It is short, with men's par 70 and women's par 72, and its defenses are undulating greens and bunkers rather than length.

The course site and GolfPass give the Red tees as 4,775 yards; the table uses the USGA figure.

Coyote Wash rates and passes for 2026-27

The town's FY 2026-27 brochure (July 2026 to June 2027) lists maximum rates and says seasonal rates fluctuate:

  • 18 holes with cart: up to $70; with your own private cart: up to $65; replay $15.
  • Live tee sheet, seen Oct 23, 2026: $45 for a few Oct 28 and Oct 30 times. The slot times shown looked wrong (after sunset), so treat them as unreliable.
  • Season pass (October to April 30): $2,500 single, $3,500 couple.
  • Annual pass (July 1 to June 30): $2,800 single, $3,800 couple.
  • 10-play punch card, transferable: $600 with cart, $550 with private cart.
  • Private cart trail fee: $100. Cart rental $17. Rental clubs $32.
  • Range: $8 for 32 balls; range pass $125 a month, $425 for the season, $475 for the year.

Passes and punch cards can't be used for tournament fees. The course website still shows older 2025-26 terms (passes non-transferable and green fees only), so ask how the 2026-27 passes work before you buy. At the $70 maximum, the punch card works out to $60 a round and a group can share it.

Booking and league mornings

The online engine releases times about 14 days ahead, while the town's FY 2026-27 brochure says to book by phone or GolfNow up to 7 days ahead, so check online first. The engine shows a 24-hour cancellation policy and you pay at the course. In season, league shotguns take the course on Tuesday (men, 9:00), Wednesday (women, 9:30), Friday (skins, 9:00) and Sunday (couples, 9:00). Monday, Thursday and Saturday are the open mornings. The town also says the course may close to open play for outings and community events.

The Coyote Den restaurant and snack shack open October to April, serving breakfast and lunch from 7 AM to 2:30 PM, and the pro shop runs 7 AM to 4 PM. GolfPass reviews average 3.9 of 5 from 495 and are mixed on conditions. The Coyote Wash course guide has the full tee sheet details, and our Coyote Wash golf course guide covers a day plan.

Butterfield Golf Course

Butterfield is a town facility on Dome Street in central Wellton: an 18-hole par 3 of 2,700 yards. The town says the front nine winds around several ponds and the back nine is gently sloping and tree-lined, and it is good for walking.

Butterfield, FY 2025-26 sheet Before 1 PM After 1 PM
18 holes$30$24
9 holes$23$21

Other posted prices: 10-round punch cards at $220 for 18 holes or $190 for 9; a season pass (October to April) at $580 single or $1,000 couple; an annual pass at $825 or $1,450. Golf carts cost $16 for 18 or $12 for 9, and handcarts $4. These are from the FY 2025-26 sheet, the latest the town had posted on Oct 23, 2026, so 2026-27 prices may be higher.

Tee times are by phone only (928-785-4030), up to 3 days ahead. The course is open 7 days a week, 7 AM to 4 PM per the fee sheet, and rentals must be back by 4 PM. There is a driving range and putting green, but no restaurant is mentioned. See the Butterfield course guide and our Butterfield golf course page.

A Wellton golf day: 36 holes

The two courses are about 2 miles apart, so 36 holes in a day is easy:

  1. Morning: Coyote Wash on a Monday, Thursday or Saturday, when no league shotgun is listed.
  2. Lunch: Coyote Den, open to 2:30 PM in season.
  3. Afternoon: Butterfield after 1 PM at $24 for 18, finishing before the 4 PM close.

For a cheaper version, flip it: Butterfield before 1 PM for practice with your wedges, then a late Coyote Wash round if the sheet shows a lower afternoon price. Either way, a day in Wellton fits neatly into a snowbird golf schedule as the "away" day of the week.

Conditions: what reviewers say

Coyote Wash reviews are mixed. Some GolfPass reviewers praise the greens, while others mention slow greens, long fairway grass and poor bunker sand, and the turf types aren't published. Our data has no review summary for Butterfield. If conditions matter to your group, call the pro shop in the week you plan to play, especially in the first weeks after the fall reopening, and ask whether carts are on paths only.

Overseed timing

Neither course published 2026 overseed dates, and the Arizona Golf Association's 2026 list shows both as "Unknown, contact course". The last published schedule, from September 2024, had Coyote Wash closed from Sep 30 to about Oct 25. In 2026 its online tee sheet was empty for Oct 23 to 27 apart from a few slots on Oct 28 to 30, which fits a similar late-October reopening. Call Coyote Wash at 928-785-4653 and Butterfield at 928-785-4030 before an October visit. Our Yuma golf overseed guide tracks the other courses.

Who Wellton golf suits

Wellton suits winter visitors who want an uncrowded backup, families (kids play free), and anyone who likes passes: the Coyote Wash season pass is $1,000 less than Mesa del Sol's $3,500 6-month pass, though what each includes differs. A 2023 GolfPass reviewer said tee times were easy to get. It suits less well golfers who want a long, demanding layout or an evening out, since the only course dining in our data closes at 2:30 PM. For more value ideas, see cheap golf in Yuma and our Yuma golf passes guide. If you base in the Foothills to be closer, start with Fortuna Foothills golf.

Plan it on the map

Both Wellton courses sit on the signpost at the east edge of the Yuma 3D map, about 40 minutes from downtown on I-8. Open the map for drive times from every hotel and RV park; the $30 plan can slot a Wellton day into a short trip or build a whole winter stay with a weekly rotation.
