Drive lines from Old Town Scottsdale: Phoenix Open golf trip: where to play and stay around WM Phoenix Open week

A Phoenix Open golf trip means Scottsdale in its single busiest week: the WM Phoenix Open runs February 8-14, 2027 at TPC Scottsdale, room rates hit their annual high, and the Stadium Course itself is off the tee sheet around the tournament. You just play other courses, stay a little further out, and book everything early.

This guide covers what changes during tournament week, which courses to play instead, what golf cost that week in the published rates, and the other events that crowd January to March. Rates were seen on November 3, 2026 and change.

Quick facts

  • Tournament week: February 8-14, 2027; rounds Thursday February 11 to Sunday February 14 on the Stadium Course.
  • Concerts: Coors Light Birds Nest, February 10-13.
  • Stadium Course: plan on it being unavailable around tournament week.
  • Highest room rates of the year: especially Thursday to Saturday in Scottsdale.
  • Next up: Cactus League spring training from February 19, 2027.
  • Weather: about 71F highs and 49F lows in February at Sky Harbor.

What happens at TPC Scottsdale

TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course is owned by the City of Scottsdale and run by the PGA Tour, and it is the reason the week exists. Its par-3 16th is enclosed by grandstands during the tournament. The course record expects stand and hospitality build-out from autumn through the Open, then teardown, and in the run-up you play past construction around 16 to 18.

The Stadium's rates are dynamic and peak after the tournament, not before it. A February 2026 GolfNewsNet report put them as high as $550 at peak times in the weeks after the Phoenix Open, with the lowest 2026 rate about $436. Late-season visitors who want the Stadium should look at November and December or twilight instead. See the TPC Scottsdale guide and the Stadium Course guide.

The Champions Course shares the clubhouse and costs far less (a third-party guide gives about $120 weekday and $150 weekend in May and October-November). During Phoenix Open week, parking and access change, so check before you book it.

Where to play during Phoenix Open week

The simplest Phoenix Open golf trip plays away from the TPC corner of north Scottsdale.

  • We-Ko-Pa Saguaro and Cholla: Coore-Crenshaw and target-style desert golf with no houses, 30 to 31 minutes from Old Town in Fort McDowell. They publish a Phoenix Open week rate (table below) and book up to 90 days ahead. See the Saguaro course guide.
  • Whirlwind Cattail: home-free desert golf on Gila River land about 20 minutes from Sky Harbor, 31 minutes from Old Town and well south of the tournament traffic.
  • Papago: Phoenix's best municipal course, 9 minutes from Old Town; book early for winter mornings.
  • Talking Stick O'odham: wide and walkable, 15 minutes from Old Town. It is near Salt River Fields, which matters more once spring training starts on February 19.

Also note that the Arcis Players' Card blacks out its bonus round on February 10-14, 2027, so regulars should not plan to redeem it that week.

What golf cost during Phoenix Open week

We-Ko-Pa is the clearest published example of a tournament-week price. Its resort rates, read November 3, 2026, are the same for both courses and exclude 9% tax:

Dates 18 holes 36-hole package Arizona ID rate
Oct 23, 2026 - Jan 7, 2027$239$448$179
Jan 8 - Feb 8, 2027$329$619$239
Feb 9-14, 2027 (Phoenix Open week)$359$679$359
Feb 15 - Apr 25, 2027$329$619$239

So the Phoenix Open premium at We-Ko-Pa is $30 a round for visitors and wipes out the Arizona resident saving that week. The Arizona ID rate needs every player's Arizona licence or ID and a booking 7 days or less out. Most other courses price dynamically and do not publish week-specific figures. For the full picture, see Scottsdale golf rates.

Where to stay for a Phoenix Open golf trip

Next to the tournament:

  • Fairmont Scottsdale Princess: next door to TPC; the golf concierge books TPC tee times up to 90 days out. It books out and peaks that week, and its resort fee is about $62.69 a night (third-party tracker, October 2026). Its 2025-26 package gave a $300 green-fee credit at TPC or Grayhawk on 3+ nights; a 2026-27 version was not yet seen.
  • Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountains: the same neighbourhood at lower all-in cost; destination fee about $34.21 a night.
  • Scottsdale Links Resort: villa space next to TPC; book early for Phoenix Open week and March. Expect timeshare sales pitches.

Away from it, the logic is price and traffic. The tournament brings heavy traffic on Scottsdale Road, Loop 101 and around Bell and Hayden Roads, and sold-out restaurants. A base in Tempe, such as the Marriott Tempe at The Buttes with the lowest resort fee on the October 2026 tracker list ($17.11), or near Whirlwind at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass ($29 resort fee), keeps you clear of the crowds. See where to stay in Scottsdale for golf.

A Phoenix Open golf trip for snowbirds already here

If you are wintering in the Valley, tournament week is a week to play close to your base rather than chase tee times in north Scottsdale. Two price points matter. At We-Ko-Pa, the Arizona ID rate that normally saves residents up to $90 rises to $359 that week, the same as the visitor rate. And City of Phoenix courses such as Aguila publish seasonal sheets: the 2026 peak sheet (February 2 to May 31) had Aguila at $69 weekday and $74 weekend walking, with Phoenix Golf Card holders at $49 and $51. The 2027 sheet was not yet published when we checked. See the snowbird golf schedule for a weekly rotation.

How to plan the week

  1. Book rooms first. Tournament week is the single most expensive hotel week of the year, especially Thursday to Saturday in Scottsdale.
  2. Book tee times as soon as windows open. We-Ko-Pa sells 90 days out; Grayhawk's public window was under four weeks when we checked.
  3. Decide whether you are going to the tournament. If yes, stay near TPC and play elsewhere on the other days. If no, consider shifting the trip a week either side.
  4. Play early. Mid-February sunrise is about 7:12 AM and sunset about 6:12 PM, so a 36-hole day is possible with a first-light start.
  5. Bring a layer. The normal February low at Sky Harbor is 49.0F, and outlying desert courses run colder at dawn.

For a group trip that week, the Scottsdale buddies golf trip guide covers big-group tee times. Weighing another desert town's event calendar? See Palm Springs golf events and Tucson golf events.

Plan it on the map

Open the Scottsdale golf map to see TPC Scottsdale against We-Ko-Pa, Whirlwind and the Tempe and East Valley hotels, with drive times from Old Town. The $30 plan builds a Phoenix Open golf trip that keeps each round on an open course and away from tournament traffic.

How much does golf cost during WM Phoenix Open week?

We-Ko-Pa publishes a Phoenix Open week rate of $359 for February 9-14, 2027, against $329 either side, and $679 for its 36-hole package against $619 (rates exclude 9% tax). TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course ran as high as $550 in the weeks after the 2026 tournament, per a February 2026 report.

Not in 2027. Cactus League games open Friday, February 19, five days after the final round, and run to about March 20-23 depending on the team. One report flags possible labour disruption to 2027 spring training.
