Cover: Canadian snowbirds in Tucson: flights, the drive south, day counts and a golf plan

Canadian snowbirds in Tucson usually fly nonstop to Phoenix and drive two hours south, or drive the whole way in about three days from Alberta. There are no nonstop flights from Canada to Tucson. Most stay one to five months in Green Valley, SaddleBrooke, Oro Valley or an RV resort, and watch three day counts.

This guide covers getting here, the day-count rules that shape how long you stay, time zones, and how to set up a winter of golf once you arrive.

Quick facts

  • Flights: no nonstop from Canada to TUS. Phoenix (PHX) has nonstops from Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Vancouver and Toronto.
  • PHX to downtown Tucson: about 121 minutes and 110.5 miles on I-10 (routed estimate).
  • Driving: Calgary about 2,665 km, Vancouver about 2,652 km, Edmonton about 2,956 km.
  • Time zone: Mountain Standard Time all year, no daylight saving.
  • Day counts: six-month US visitor limit, the IRS 183-day weighted test, and your provincial health limit.
  • Season: arrivals late October to November; departures after Easter (March 28, 2027).

Flying from Canada to Tucson

Tucson International (TUS) is about 17 minutes from downtown and handy for Green Valley. Its nonstops reach Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Denver, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix and others, but none reach Canada. Searches found no WestJet or Air Canada Tucson route for 2026-27, so a flight to TUS means a connection.

Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is the main gateway. Route pages read on October 23, 2026 showed WestJet from Calgary (daily), Edmonton (six days a week) and Saskatoon (Thursday and Sunday), WestJet and Air Canada from Vancouver (daily), and Air Canada and Porter from Toronto (daily). Those were checked for our Yuma research and not re-checked for Tucson, so confirm before you book.

Drive times are free-flow estimates from a public router, which tends to run long on interstates. Marana, Dove Mountain and Oro Valley are closer to PHX than downtown Tucson is, which helps if you base on the north side. Our flights to Tucson and Phoenix to Tucson drive guides go further.

Driving south from Alberta or BC

Most Canadian snowbirds who drive bring golf clubs, a car for the season and often an RV. From Calgary, the usual route is I-15 south through Montana, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, then US-93 to Phoenix and I-10 to Tucson. Most take three days. Alberta drivers commonly cross at Coutts/Sweetgrass, which is open 24 hours. Winter weather in Montana, Idaho and Utah can slow or close I-15, so leave a spare day.

Arizona-wide, our Calgary to Yuma drive guide covers the same I-15 corridor.

The three day counts for Canadian snowbirds in Tucson

Three separate clocks decide how long a Canadian snowbird stays.

  1. US immigration. Canadian visitors are normally admitted for up to six months. The officer at the border decides.
  2. US tax. The IRS substantial presence test counts your days this year, plus a third of last year's and a sixth of the year before. 183 or more weighted days (with at least 31 this year) makes you a US tax resident unless you file Form 8840 by June 15. Staying under about 120 days every year keeps you below 183.
  3. Provincial health coverage. Each province sets its own limit on time away, commonly around 182 to 183 days in 12 months. Separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential.

Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 or older staying 30 days or more who did not get an I-94, for example because they drove in, must register with USCIS. The popular "182-day rule" is shorthand for the six-month limits, not one law. This is general information only, not tax or legal advice, and the rules change.

A 120-day winter fits neatly between early December and early April, which covers most of the peak golf season.

Time zones

Tucson keeps Mountain Standard Time all year. For Canadians that means:

  • Alberta and Saskatchewan: one hour ahead of Tucson all year.
  • British Columbia: one hour behind Tucson in winter, the same in summer.
  • Manitoba: one hour ahead in winter.
  • Ontario and Quebec: two hours ahead in winter.

Tucson is also one hour ahead of California and Las Vegas from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027.

Where Canadian snowbirds base

The main snowbird bases are Green Valley, SaddleBrooke and the RV resorts on Tucson's edges. Stays usually run one to five months.

A golf plan for the winter

Season deals are sold course by course. These are the clearest options we found (seen October 2026; rates change):

Option Price What you get
SaddleBrooke One Renters Play Pass$580 a month (2026 golf year)Unlimited golf, subject to tee times
Quail Creek renter rate$84 for 18, cart extra (prime season 2026)Versus $130 non-resident with cart
Quail Creek Platinum annual$4,120 single / $7,830 dualFor residents and renters
Tucson City Card$50 + tax for the rest of 2026City-card rates at five city courses, 7-day booking
Tucson City Golf Mega Pass$2,200 + tax everyday / $1,750 weekdayUnlimited at city courses, May 1 to Dec 31, 2026 only

The SaddleBrooke price is from the golf year that ended October 31, 2026, so the 2026-27 figure may differ; check with SaddleBrooke Country Club. The City Card covers Randolph North and the other four city courses; per-course card rates and a 2027 card were not published. Our Tucson golf passes guide lists every pass we found, and the Quail Creek course guide and SaddleBrooke course guide have the details.

A sensible pattern: pick a home course near your rental, buy whatever pass it offers, then add one away day a week. The town-owned El Conquistador in Oro Valley was taking late-October 2026 times at $46.69 to $85.79. Our snowbird golf schedule for Tucson turns this into a weekly rotation, and Tucson winter golf covers the season.

Winter weather for Canadians

January at the airport averages a 66.5F high and 40.8F low (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Nights are colder in Green Valley (36.1F) and at Catalina State Park near Oro Valley (30.6F), so frost delays on first tee times are common. Torres Blancas and Canoa Ranch run a Frost and Heat Index line (520-352-1082) for same-day checks. March warms to about 75.8F with 0.56 in of rain, and April to 82.9F.

If you are weighing Arizona towns, our Canadian snowbirds in Yuma guide is the warmer, smaller alternative.

Plan it on the map

Open the Tucson golf map to see every course, rental and RV resort with drive times between them. The $30 plan can cover a whole winter stay of 2 to 12 weeks, with a weekly course rotation, the passes worth buying and a base matched to the courses you will play most.
