Slope ladder: Phoenix winter golf: how a snowbird season of Valley golf works, month by month

Phoenix winter golf runs from November, when courses come back from fall overseed, to April, when the snowbirds head home and rates step down. Highs sit in the mid-60s to high 70s, rain falls on three or four days a month, and the rye stays green. The catch is demand: January to March is peak, with the highest fees and tightest tee sheets of the year.

This guide explains how a full snowbird season fits together: the weather month by month, the peak weeks to plan around, where to base, and the cards and booking windows that keep five months of golf affordable. Fees were seen in November 2026 and change.

Quick facts

  • Season: about November to April, peaking January to March.
  • Weather: highs about 66F (December) to 86F (April) at Sky Harbor; lows of 45-46F in December and January.
  • Time zone: Mountain Standard Time all year, no daylight saving.
  • Peak of the peak: WM Phoenix Open week (February 8-14, 2027) and spring training (from February 19, 2027).
  • Overseed: most courses close for two to three weeks between late September and early November.
  • Bases: east Mesa and Apache Junction RV resorts, Sun Lakes, Scottsdale and Kierland condos.

NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Phoenix Sky Harbor, about 10 miles southwest of Old Town; sunsets computed for the 15th of each month in 2027. Outlying desert courses run colder at dawn than Sky Harbor.

The arc of a snowbird season

November: overseed hangover, then the best month. Courses reopen from overseed with temporary greens or cart-path-only for a week or two. In 2026, Talking Stick's Piipaash is cart path only November 6-26, We-Ko-Pa's Cholla through November 24, and Gold Canyon's Dinosaur Mountain reopens November 6 with up to six weeks on paths. After that, November is mid-70s, dry and priced below peak: We-Ko-Pa charges $239 from October 23 to January 7 against $329 from January 8.

December: short days and cold mornings. Sunset is about 5:20pm, so tee sheets compress, and dawn lows around 45F mean frost delays on outlying courses. Rates stay at shoulder until the holidays; the Christmas and New Year weeks are busy.

January to March: peak. The snowbird crowd is settled, rates are at their highest and the best morning times go as soon as windows open. Barrett-Jackson, the Phoenix Open and spring training stack on top. This is where cards, early booking and a fixed weekly rotation pay off.

April: the reward. Mid-80s and nearly dry, with courses stepping down from peak rates as snowbirds leave. Easter is March 28, 2027.

Where to base for a winter of golf

  • East Mesa, Apache Junction and Gold Canyon RV resorts: the cheapest season, from $3,445 for January to March at Apache Wells plus utilities. Most are 55+. See Mesa RV resorts.
  • Sun Lakes and other active-adult communities: furnished condos at about $2,000 to $3,500 a month in listings seen, near Chandler's value courses.
  • Scottsdale and Kierland condos: about $3,000 to $7,000 or more a month, minutes from TPC Scottsdale and Grayhawk.

Compare them in Phoenix snowbird rentals. The base sets your rotation: east Mesa golfers play Painted Mountain, Longbow and Superstition Springs; a Kierland base puts Kierland, TPC Scottsdale and Grayhawk within about 11 minutes.

Cards that cut the cost of a winter

A season of three or four rounds a week makes the discount cards worth doing the maths on. The main ones in the files:

Card 2026-27 price What it covers
Phoenix Golf Card$60 first year (Maricopa County residents); $120 non-residentcity courses plus Papago and GCU; 10-14 day booking for a fee
Arcis Players' Card$27920%+ off at 8 Arcis courses including McDowell Mountain, Ocotillo and Superstition Springs; 8-day booking
Talking Stick Card$129 + taxcard rates for holder plus one guest, one free round
Legend Trail Loyalty Card$349 + taxup to 50% off, every 10th round free, 7-day booking
Dove Valley Loyalty Card$360season-fixed rates at Dove Valley Ranch, Power Ranch and Longbow
Swing First Golf Card$17915% off green fees at Scottsdale Country Club

Example from the city rate sheets: at Aguila, October 19 to December 25, 2026, the public pays $69 weekday walking before 1pm and Golf Card holders $49. At Cave Creek it is $60 against $46. The files do not say whether non-resident card holders get the same card rates, so ask before buying. Full details are in Phoenix golf passes.

Booking windows to plan around

  • City of Phoenix courses: 9 days out at posted rates; Golf Card holders 10-14 days online for a convenience fee.
  • We-Ko-Pa Saguaro and Cholla: resort rates 0-90 days ahead; the Arizona ID rate only within 7 days.
  • Dove Valley Ranch: public up to 90 days; loyalty cardholders 30 days.
  • McDowell Mountain and the Arcis courses: card holders 8 days; public window not published.
  • Legend Trail: card and pass holders 7 days.
  • Grayhawk: the public sheet showed November 10 times but none for December 1 on November 3, so under four weeks.

For a whole winter, book the fixed slots of your weekly rotation as far ahead as each course allows, and keep one flexible day for hot deals. Most windows open at a fixed hour, so set a reminder.

A sensible winter rhythm

Most snowbirds settle into three or four rounds a week:

  1. Two or three value rounds at courses near the base, on a card: Papago (from $109 on GolfPass, Golf Card accepted), Talking Stick O'odham on the Talking Stick Card, or Painted Mountain from the Mesa parks.
  2. One better round a week: Longbow, Las Sendas, Dove Valley Ranch or Legend Trail.
  3. One splurge a month: We-Ko-Pa in November or December at $239, Troon North or TPC Scottsdale at twilight.
  4. Mid-morning starts in December and January, when dawns are coldest.

The weekly snowbird golf schedule lays out sample weeks from each base. See the Papago course guide, the We-Ko-Pa Saguaro course guide and the Talking Stick O'odham course guide.

Peak weeks to plan around

  • Barrett-Jackson, January 23-31, 2027: fills hotels and traffic near WestWorld; little direct effect on golf away from north Scottsdale.
  • WM Phoenix Open, February 8-14, 2027: expect the TPC Stadium Course to be unavailable around tournament week, heavy traffic near TPC, and We-Ko-Pa at $359. Arcis bonus rounds are blacked out February 10-14.
  • Spring training, February 19 to about March 20-23, 2027: busy near the ballparks in Scottsdale, Talking Stick, Mesa and Tempe.

Questions golfers ask

Is Phoenix good for winter golf?

Yes. NOAA normals at Sky Harbor give highs of about 66F in December, 68F in January, 71F in February and 78F in March, with three to four rain days a month. Nearly every course is overseeded with rye, so fairways play green from about November to May.

When does the snowbird golf season start in Phoenix?

Roughly November, once courses reopen from fall overseed, and it peaks January to March. November is one of the best golf months, in the mid-70s with fresh rye and rates below the January-April peak.

What are the busiest weeks for Phoenix winter golf?

Barrett-Jackson (January 23-31, 2027) fills north Scottsdale hotels, the WM Phoenix Open (tournament week February 8-14, 2027) is the single most expensive week, and Cactus League spring training runs from February 19 to about March 20-23, 2027. March is the best weather month and the most crowded.

How cold is it for early tee times in winter?

Normal lows at Sky Harbor are about 45F in December and 46F in January, and outlying desert courses in north Scottsdale, Rio Verde and the far East Valley run colder at dawn. Early tee times can wait on frost, and December sunset is about 5:20pm.

Can snowbirds get resident golf rates in Phoenix?

It depends on the program. The Phoenix Golf Card is $60 the first year for Maricopa County residents and $120 a year for non-residents. We-Ko-Pa's Arizona ID rate needs every player in the group to show an Arizona driver's licence or ID and is booked within 7 days.

How far ahead can I book winter tee times?

It varies. City of Phoenix courses open 9 days out, or 10-14 days online for Golf Card holders with a fee. We-Ko-Pa resort rates, Dove Valley Ranch, Eagle Mountain, Kierland and Gold Canyon open up to 90 days ahead, while Grayhawk's public sheet showed under four weeks.

Where do snowbirds stay for a Phoenix golf winter?

Most stay in the 55+ RV and park-model resorts of east Mesa, Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, active-adult communities such as Sun Lakes, or furnished condos in Scottsdale and Kierland. RV packages for January to March run about $3,445 to $5,400 plus utilities on the 2026-27 cards.
