Slope ladder: Palm Springs winter golf: how a snowbird season in the Coachella Valley works

Palm Springs winter golf for snowbirds runs about November to April, with peak golf from January to April. Most courses are back from fall overseed by mid-November, but a few reopen in late November or December. Rates climb into peak season, so the best value comes from season cards such as Desert Willow's Platinum Club Card.

The Coachella Valley is set up for a golf winter. Afternoon highs sit around 69F to 87F from December to April, rain falls on only a few days a month, and there are public courses from Desert Hot Springs to Indio. This guide covers when to arrive, which courses are open early in the season, where to base, how the money works, and the weeks that get crowded.

Quick facts

  • Season: snowbirds arrive through November and leave through April; peak golf is January to April.
  • Busiest stretch: March, when snowbirds, spring break, Easter (March 28, 2027) and the BNP Paribas Open overlap.
  • Overseed: nearly every course closes for a few weeks between late September and early December. Most were open again by mid-November 2026.
  • Weather: about 70F highs in January at Palm Springs airport; east-valley dawns 7 to 9 degrees F colder.
  • Best value for frequent golfers: season cards at Desert Willow, Escena and Indian Wells (for residents).
  • Time zone: Pacific. Clocks fell back November 1, 2026 and spring forward March 14, 2027.

December69.2 / 46.237.72.7Coldest dawns, short days, holiday weeks priced like peak

April86.7 / 59.154.81.1Snowbirds leave, rates step down, festival weekends in Indio

Normals are NOAA 1991-2020 at Palm Springs airport (PSP), with lows from Thermal's airport for the east valley. Afternoon highs are nearly the same across the valley. The difference is dawn: the open desert around La Quinta, PGA West and Indio runs much colder in December and January, so first tee times there wait on frost more often. Arriving in November: which courses are open

Snowbirds who arrive in early November need to know the overseed calendar. Almost every course is bermuda overseeded with rye and closes for a few weeks each fall, and multi-course facilities stagger the work so one course stays open. From the 2026 overseed schedules:

Expect two to three weeks of cart-path-only play after most reopenings. The full course-by-course list is in Palm Springs golf overseed dates. For November and most of December 2026, Mountain View is the only Desert Willow course open, so book it early; see the Mountain View course guide.

Where snowbirds base for a golf winter

The valley runs about 40 minutes end to end on Highway 111 or I-10 in free-flow, longer in peak-season afternoons. Pick a base near the courses you will play most.

  • West (Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs): closest to Escena, Tahquitz Creek, Indian Canyons, Cimarron and Desert Princess, all within about 12 minutes of downtown. In Palm Springs, rental stays of 28 nights or more are reported to carry no city transient occupancy tax.
  • Middle (Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells): Desert Willow is about 23 minutes from downtown and Indian Wells Golf Resort 29, with the Classic Club, Desert Springs and the Sun City Palm Desert courses nearby.
  • East (La Quinta, Indio): PGA West, SilverRock, Terra Lago and the Indio community courses, plus most of the big RV and motorcoach resorts. Colder dawns, and Coachella and Stagecoach traffic in April.

Condo listings at Desert Princess ran about $1,800 to $4,395 a month and RV sites at Shadow Hills RV Resort about $1,499 to $1,999 a month in an undated article (call to confirm). See Palm Springs snowbird rentals for prices and rules.

How the money works: season cards and resident rates

Peak green fees are high. Desert Willow's own estimates for January to mid-April are $125 to $210 for prime times, and the PGA West Stadium ran about $235 in a user-contributed April 2026 figure. Over a winter of two or three rounds a week, the cards matter:

  • Desert Willow Platinum Club Card: $599 non-resident, $329 with a Palm Desert Resident Card, October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. 25 to 30 percent off dynamic fees at both courses, 60-day booking, up to 3 guests at preferred rates.
  • Palm Desert Resident Card: $52 a year, for a $52 resident rate inside a 3-day window. For residents, not visitors.
  • Escena Club card: $399 for 2026-27, cardholder rates with cart for you and up to 3 guests. See the Escena course guide.
  • Indian Wells resident rates: $50 from January 1 to April 30 at Indian Wells Golf Resort for Resident Benefit Card holders, per the city's benefits page (season year not stated). Whether a seasonal renter qualifies is unconfirmed.
  • Community programs: Shadow Hills has a resident Player's Card that earns free rounds, and Mountain Vista at Sun City Palm Desert has Seasonal Rate Lock programs. Mission Hills Gary Player takes the Coachella Valley Resident Golf Card on its own tee sheet; the card's price is not published.

The full list, with who qualifies, is in Palm Springs golf passes.

A weekly rhythm that works

Most snowbirds settle into a home course near their rental, then add one or two other rounds a week. Weekday afternoon times are the easiest savings: Desert Willow's sunset tier was estimated at $65 to $100 from January to mid-April against $125 to $210 for prime times. Many courses run dynamic pricing, so booking a few days out on a weekday usually beats a weekend morning. A sample rotation by area is in the snowbird golf schedule. The Shadow Hills South course guide covers one of the Indio community courses that returns for the winter from about November 6.

The peak-season crunch

Five events move tee times and rooms in winter 2026-27:

  • The American Express, January 21-24, 2027: the PGA West Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses close to public play for tournament week and setup, and La Quinta fills.
  • Palm Springs International Film Festival, January 7-18, 2027: downtown Palm Springs hotels.
  • Modernism Week, February 11-21, 2027: Palm Springs rentals and boutique hotels.
  • BNP Paribas Open, February 28 to March 14, 2027: Indian Wells, Palm Desert and La Quinta at their highest rates.
  • Coachella (April 9-11 and 16-18) and Stagecoach (April 23-25, 2027): valley-wide room prices at the year's highest; courses stay open and are often quiet.

Book tee times as soon as windows open for February and March. See Palm Springs events that move prices.

Leaving in April

Courses usually start stepping rates down in April as snowbirds head home, and May brings mid-90s heat, summer rates and the spring transition as rye thins and bermuda takes over. If you can stay through mid-April, the midweek days between the festival weekends can be good value for golf. For the year-round picture, read the best time to golf in Palm Springs. Canadians should also read Canadian snowbirds in Palm Springs for the stay limits. Comparing desert winters? See Tucson winter golf and Yuma winter golf.

Plan it on the map

Open the Palm Springs golf map to see every course with its overseed dates, the rentals and RV resorts, and drive times from your base. The $30 plan can cover a whole winter stay of 2 to 12 weeks, with a weekly course rotation that skips courses while they are closed.

Questions golfers ask

When is the Palm Springs winter golf season?

Snowbirds arrive through November and leave through April. Peak golf, with the highest green fees and tightest tee sheets, runs January to April, and the busiest stretch is the 'March crush', when snowbirds, spring break and the BNP Paribas Open overlap. November and most of December are shoulder months with fresh rye and lower rates.

Are Palm Springs golf courses open in November?

Most are, but some reopen late from fall overseed. In 2026 the PGA West Stadium Course reopened November 9, Indian Canyons South November 17 and Tahquitz Creek Legend about November 25, while Desert Willow Firecliff is closed November 9 to December 25 and PGA West Norman November 9 to December 7. Check each course before booking.

How cold is Palm Springs in winter?

NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Palm Springs airport give about 69F highs and 46F lows in December and about 70F and 48F in January. The east valley is as warm by day but colder at dawn: Thermal's January normal low is 39.0F, so La Quinta, PGA West and Indio courses get more frost delays.

What is the best golf deal for a Palm Springs snowbird?

For frequent golfers, a season card at a public course. Desert Willow's Platinum Club Card was $599 for non-residents for October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027, with 25 to 30 percent off its dynamic fees and a 60-day booking window. Escena's club card was $399 for 2026-27 with cardholder rates for you and up to 3 guests.

Where do snowbirds stay for golf in Palm Springs?

Mostly in condos and homes inside golf communities, 55+ communities such as Sun City Palm Desert, and RV or motorcoach resorts in Indio, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs. Desert Princess condo listings ran about $1,800 to $4,395 a month in listings seen in November 2026.

Does it rain much in Palm Springs in winter?

Very little. December and January average about 2.7 days with measurable rain at Palm Springs airport and February about 3.1, which makes them the wettest months of the year. The annual normal is 4.61 inches.

Which weeks should snowbirds avoid booking golf around?

The American Express at PGA West (January 21-24, 2027) closes the Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses to public play for tournament week. The BNP Paribas Open (February 28 to March 14, 2027) fills Indian Wells, Palm Desert and La Quinta. Coachella and Stagecoach in April push room prices to the year's highest.
