Canadian snowbirds reach Palm Springs on WestJet nonstops from Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, on seasonal flights from Winnipeg and Toronto, or on a three-day drive from Alberta. Once there, three separate clocks limit a winter: US entry (normally up to six months), the IRS day-count test and your province's health-coverage rules.
The Coachella Valley is one of the main winter golf bases for snowbirds from Alberta, BC, the Prairies and the Pacific Northwest. This guide for Canadian snowbirds in Palm Springs covers the flights, the drive, time zones, the stay limits, and how to set up a whole winter of golf. Prices are in US dollars, seen November 2, 2026, and they change.

| WestJet | Edmonton | Year-round |
| WestJet | Vancouver | Year-round |

The table comes from Wikipedia's Palm Springs airport page, read November 2, 2026, which flags itself as incomplete. In May 2025 Flair and WestJet cut some seasonal PSP flights to Vancouver and Winnipeg, and winter 2026-27 frequencies could not be confirmed. Check the airline's schedule before you build a winter around a route.
PSP handled 3,307,140 passengers in 2025 and is the closest airport to every part of the valley: 10 minutes to downtown Palm Springs and under 45 minutes to La Quinta and Indio. Peak-season fares can be high. The alternatives:
- Ontario (ONT): about 84 minutes and 70 miles to downtown Palm Springs in free-flow, often cheaper than PSP. Canadian nonstops to Ontario were not verified for 2026-27.
- Los Angeles (LAX): about 145 minutes free-flow, commonly 2.5 to 4 hours in traffic. The widest choice of Canadian nonstops.
- Phoenix (PHX): WestJet from Calgary daily, Edmonton 6 days a week and Saskatoon twice weekly (route data from October 2026, not re-checked). But it is about 294 minutes to Palm Springs, so it only suits a split Arizona-California winter.
More detail is in flights to Palm Springs.
Driving from Alberta and BC
| From | Distance | Free-flow time | Usual route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calgary | 2,542 km | about 27 hr | Coutts/Sweetgrass, I-15 via Salt Lake City and Las Vegas |
| Edmonton | 2,833 km | about 30.5 hr | Joins the Calgary route |
| Vancouver | 2,224 km | about 26.5 hr | I-5 via Seattle, crossing at Blaine |
| Seattle | 1,996 km | about 23.5 hr | I-5 through Oregon and California |
Times are free-flow router estimates to downtown Palm Springs, which usually run a little long. Alberta drivers commonly take AB-2 or AB-4 to the Coutts/Sweetgrass crossing, which is open 24 hours, then I-15 south through Great Falls, Helena, Idaho Falls, Salt Lake City, St. George and Las Vegas. Most take three days. BC drivers usually take I-5. Winter weather in Montana, Idaho and Utah, or over Oregon's Siskiyou Summit, can slow or close either route, so leave room in the schedule.
A car is close to essential for a golf winter: the valley's courses run from Desert Hot Springs to Indio, and the drive from Palm Springs to La Quinta alone is about 40 minutes. For an Alberta road trip that ends in Arizona instead, compare the drive from Calgary to Yuma.
Time zones
The whole Coachella Valley is on Pacific time with daylight saving: PST from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, then PDT. The Canadian side, as checked in late October 2026:
- Alberta and Saskatchewan stay on UTC-6: two hours ahead of Palm Springs in winter, one hour ahead in summer.
- British Columbia has stayed on UTC-7 since March 8, 2026: one hour ahead in winter, the same in summer.
- Manitoba is two hours ahead all year; Ontario and Quebec three hours.
Arizona stays on UTC-7, so in winter Phoenix is one hour ahead of Palm Springs.
Stay limits for Canadian snowbirds
Three different limits apply, and they are often mixed up as one "182-day rule".
- US immigration. Canadian citizens visiting as tourists are normally admitted for up to six months. The Canadian Snowbird Association states the limit as "six months less a day" (182 days) in a 12-month period, and border officers decide. A short trip home of under 30 days may still count toward the total. Bills to extend the limit to 240 days have been introduced in Congress but not passed.
- US tax. The IRS substantial presence test counts all days this year, one-third of last year's days and one-sixth of the year before. 183 or more weighted days (with at least 31 this year) makes you a US tax resident unless you qualify for the closer connection exception by filing Form 8840, due by June 15 for most snowbirds. Staying no more than about 120 days every year keeps you under the 183 weighted days.
- Provincial health coverage. Each province sets its own limit on time away, commonly around 182 to 183 days in 12 months. Check yours, and buy separate out-of-country medical insurance.
Two more points. Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record, which includes most who drive in at a land crossing, must register with USCIS (Form G-325R). And because US land-entry data is shared with the CBSA, Canadian authorities can see departure dates. Fall 2026 news coverage said snowbirds heading south should expect extra US scrutiny. This is general information, not tax or legal advice; recheck it before you go.

- Indian Wells Golf Resort resident rates: $50 from January 1 to April 30 for city Resident Benefit Card holders, but whether a seasonal renter qualifies is not confirmed.
For lower everyday fees on the west side, Mission Lakes in Desert Hot Springs showed $34 with cart in August 2026 and Cimarron Boulder $56.49 at 3:04 pm for November 3, 2026.
