One flag per course: Scottsdale golf in winter: what December and January are really like

Scottsdale golf in winter means afternoons in the mid-60s, chilly dawns that can bring frost delays on outlying courses, and short days with sunset around 5:20pm to 5:45pm. December is still shoulder season apart from the holiday weeks; January is the start of peak season, with green fees rising and snowbirds settled in for the winter.

This guide covers December and January: the weather, how short days and frost shape your tee times, how rates step up around the new year, the busy weeks, and course conditions. Fees were seen in October and November 2026 and change.

Quick facts

  • December: 66.2F high, 45.3F low, about 4 rain days, sunset about 5:21pm.
  • January: 67.6F high, 46.0F low, about 3.8 rain days, sunset about 5:43pm.
  • Frost: rare at Sky Harbor (0.4 nights in January), more likely on outlying desert courses.
  • Rates: shoulder in December, peak from early January (We-Ko-Pa steps up January 8, 2027).
  • Busy weeks: Christmas to New Year, and Barrett-Jackson (January 23-31, 2027) for hotels.
  • Clocks: Phoenix is one hour ahead of Pacific time all winter.

Weather is NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Phoenix Sky Harbor; sunrise and sunset are computed for 2027 at Old Town. For all twelve months see Scottsdale weather by month.

Frost, cold dawns and short days

The biggest variable in Scottsdale golf in winter is the first hour of the day. Sky Harbor's dawns average about 45F, and courses in north Scottsdale, Rio Verde and the far East Valley run colder; no normals were gathered for them, but early tee times there can wait on frost. Sunrise is around 7:25am to 7:30am, and sunset comes before 5:45pm, so the usable day is short and tee sheets are compressed. Arizona Grand, for example, lists hours of sunrise to 4:30pm.

Practical rules:

  • Book 9am to noon for the best of both: thawed greens and enough light to finish.
  • Start in layers; afternoons reach the mid-60s.
  • Late tee times can save money (Aguila's post-overseed twilight rate starts at 1pm) but may not finish 18 holes.

How rates change around the new year

December is still shoulder pricing on most published cards. January brings peak rates.

Course December January
We-Ko-Pa Saguaro and Cholla$239 (to Jan 7)$329 (from Jan 8)
We-Ko-Pa, Arizona ID$179$239 (from Jan 8)

City rates are weekday and weekend walking rates before 1pm; the City of Phoenix's December 26, 2026 to February 1, 2027 sheet had not been published when checked. We-Ko-Pa's 36-hole package is $448 to January 7 and $619 from January 8. See the Saguaro course guide and our Scottsdale golf rates guide.

The busy weeks

  • Christmas to New Year: busy resort weeks at shoulder rates. The Arcis Players' Card blacks out bonus rounds December 26, 2026 to January 1, 2027.
  • After the holidays: more snowbirds arrive, so morning tee times tighten from then to April.
  • Barrett-Jackson, January 23-31, 2027: the collector-car auction at WestWorld fills north Scottsdale hotels and adds traffic on Pima Road and Loop 101, with a concert on January 21 and an opening gala on January 22. Book north Scottsdale rooms early that week.

The next big squeeze is February: see planning a Phoenix Open golf trip.

Course conditions in December and January

By December most courses are past their overseed and green with rye. Exceptions worth knowing:

For a winter walk, Talking Stick O'odham is wide and walkable, 15 minutes from Old Town, and Papago is the long city course 9 minutes from Old Town; it is busy on winter mornings, so book early. See the Papago course guide.

Winter for snowbirds

Snowbirds arrive through November and after the holidays, and many stay for the whole of the Scottsdale golf in winter season into April. Discount cards start to pay back on a weekly schedule: the Legend Trail Loyalty Card ($349 plus tax) gives up to 50% off green fees and every 10th round free (see the Legend Trail course guide), and the Arcis Players' Card ($279) covers McDowell Mountain and seven other Arcis courses. Robert's RV resorts ran December 2026 specials of $699 to $999 a month, before January to March prime rates. See Phoenix golf passes, Mesa RV resorts and Phoenix winter golf for snowbirds.

A sample week of Scottsdale golf in winter

A week of Scottsdale golf in winter works best with mid-morning starts and a mix of price levels. One example for a December visit, using courses and rates from our files:

  • Day 1: an arrival round at Talking Stick O'odham, wide and walkable, 15 minutes from Old Town.
  • Day 2: We-Ko-Pa Saguaro at the $239 resort rate (valid to January 7), or the $448 36-hole package if you want Cholla in the afternoon and the daylight allows.
  • Day 3: a city round at Papago or Encanto to keep the budget down.
  • Day 4: a rest day. The Desert Botanical Garden is open daily 7am to 10pm through December 31, 2026, closed on Christmas Day, with adult tickets from $32.95.
  • Day 5: Troon North Monument as the splurge, booked for 9am or later so the desert has warmed up.

In January, budget for We-Ko-Pa's higher rate from January 8 and book earlier, because snowbirds fill the morning sheets. A 36-hole day is harder at this time of year: with about ten hours of daylight, it needs an early first round and a quick turn.

If you are choosing between months

November is warmer and cheaper, with some cart-path-only weeks; see Scottsdale golf in October and November. March has the best weather and the biggest crowds. Our best time to golf in Scottsdale guide compares every month. For other desert options in the same weeks, see Palm Springs golf in winter and Tucson golf in January.

Plan it on the map

Open the Scottsdale golf map to see winter rates, booking windows and course conditions. The $30 plan sets winter tee times late enough to miss frost and early enough to finish before dark, and it can cover a whole winter stay with a weekly rotation.

Questions golfers ask

Is Scottsdale warm enough for golf in winter?

Yes. Normal highs at Sky Harbor are 66.2F in December and 67.6F in January, with about four rain days a month. Dawns average about 45F to 46F and run colder on outlying desert courses, so morning rounds start in layers.

Are there frost delays in Scottsdale?

Sometimes, mainly in December and January. Sky Harbor averages only 0.4 nights below freezing in January, but north Scottsdale, Rio Verde and Gold Canyon are colder at dawn, and early tee times can wait on frost. A mid-morning time avoids the problem.

When do peak golf rates start in Scottsdale?

Around the new year, varying by course. We-Ko-Pa moves from $239 to $329 on January 8, 2027. The City of Phoenix's post-overseed rates run to December 25, 2026, and its December 26 to February 1 sheet had not been published when we checked.

Is Scottsdale busy at Christmas?

Christmas to New Year weeks are busy at the resorts, even though December is otherwise shoulder season. The Arcis Players' Card blacks out its bonus round December 26, 2026 to January 1, 2027. Book holiday tee times early.

What is Barrett-Jackson and does it affect golf?

It is a collector-car auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale, January 23-31, 2027. It fills north Scottsdale hotels near WestWorld and adds traffic around Pima Road and Loop 101, with little direct effect on golf beyond nearby courses.

How short are winter days for golf in Scottsdale?

Sunset is about 5:21pm in mid-December and 5:43pm in mid-January, with about 10 hours of daylight. Arizona Grand, for example, lists hours of sunrise to 4:30pm. A tee time after about 1pm may not finish 18 holes.

Are Scottsdale courses green in winter?

Most are, because they overseed bermuda with rye each fall. Exceptions in our files: Gold Canyon's Sidewinder overseeds only greens and tees, so its fairways are dormant bermuda in mid-winter, and Verrado Founders reportedly does not overseed its rough.
