From Wikipedia's Harry Reid International Airport airlines table, read November 4, 2026. Routes not marked seasonal may still be seasonal, and frequencies were not checked.
Harry Reid is the only airline airport for the area, about 3 miles from the Strip. Rental cars are at a consolidated rental car centre about 3 miles away, reached by shuttle bus. The airport research says a rental car makes sense for snowbird stays and for the Henderson, Summerlin, Boulder City and outlying courses.
Driving from Alberta and BC
| From | Distance | Free-flow time |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle | 1,794 km | about 21 hours |
| Vancouver | 2,012 km | about 24 hours |
| Calgary | 2,102 km | about 22 hours |
| Edmonton | 2,392 km | about 25.5 hours |
Estimates to the Strip from the public OSRM router, with no traffic or stops. Alberta drivers commonly take I-15 from the Coutts/Sweetgrass crossing through Montana, Idaho and Utah straight to Las Vegas; the route was not checked turn by turn. Winter weather in Montana, Idaho and northern Utah can slow or close I-15, so leave slack in the schedule. Drivers at a land crossing may also need to register with USCIS (below).
Time zones: Las Vegas and home
Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City are on Pacific time: PST in winter and PDT from March 14 to November 7, 2027.
- Alberta: one hour ahead all year.
- British Columbia: on UTC-7 since March 8, 2026, so one hour ahead in winter and the same in summer.
- Saskatchewan: two hours ahead in winter, one in summer.
- Manitoba: two hours ahead all year (assumed still Central with DST; not re-checked).
- Ontario and Quebec: three hours ahead.
Arizona, including the Hoover Dam visitor side, stays on MST, so it is an hour ahead of Las Vegas in winter.
The stay rules for Canadian snowbirds in Las Vegas
Three separate clocks matter. This is general information, not tax or legal advice; recheck before you go.
- US immigration: Canadian tourists are normally admitted for up to six months. The Canadian Snowbird Association gives the limit as six months less a day, 182 days, in a 12-month period, and the border officer decides.
- US tax: the IRS substantial presence test counts all days this year plus one-third of last year's and one-sixth of the year before. At 183 weighted days or more (with at least 31 this year), you are a US tax resident unless you qualify for the closer connection exception by filing Form 8840.
- Provincial health coverage: each province sets its own limit on time away. Separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential.
Registration: since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record, for example most who drive in at a land crossing, must register with USCIS.
Arriving at Harry Reid
Harry Reid has two terminals: Terminal 1 (A, B, C and satellite D gates) and Terminal 3 (E gates and international arrivals). There is no rail link; RTC public buses serve the terminals, and taxis and ride-hail pick up from each terminal's garage level. The airport handled 54,989,185 passengers in 2025, down 5.9% from the 2024 record. A free-flow estimate puts it 42 minutes from Henderson's Green Valley and 50 from Downtown Summerlin, though the research flags the airport times as probably overstated.
How Las Vegas compares for a Canadian winter
The season research says winter in Las Vegas is cooler than Phoenix or Palm Springs, with January highs about 59F and frosty dawns, but green fees are at their lowest of the cool months and Strip shows and sports are on the doorstep. Two other Lie of the Land towns sit within a day trip: Mesquite, about 80 miles north-east on I-15, and Laughlin, about 90 miles south.
Where Canadian snowbirds base
- Furnished 55+ homes: Sun City Summerlin rentals at about $1,700 to $2,300 a month in listings seen, and Sun City Anthem rentals at $2,250 in the one dated listing.
- Extended-stay suites: the Residence Inn South/Henderson, with kitchens and no monthly rate published.
- RV parks: from about $530 a month at Duck Creek (third-party) to $699 at the KOA at Sam's Town.
In unincorporated Clark County, rentals under 31 days need a short-term rental licence, so book 31 nights or more. See Las Vegas snowbird rentals and Las Vegas RV parks.
Golf for a whole winter
The cheapest way to golf all winter is a rotation of good-value public courses near your base, with a better round once a week. From Sun City Summerlin, Palm Valley is 6 minutes away and Angel Park 10. From Anthem, the Revere is 2 minutes away and sold at $83.99 to $148.99 with cart on GolfNow in October 2026. The Legacy in Henderson ran $46.99 to $57.99 that month.
Resident rates are the big saver if you qualify. Reflection Bay and the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort accept a Nevada licence or a Nevada Seasonal Resident ID for Clark County resident rates, with a 7-day booking window; how to obtain the seasonal ID is not covered in our files. The Paiute Wolf is the longest and hardest of the three Pete Dye courses there, 7,604 yards at 76.3/149. See the Paiute Wolf course guide and the Reflection Bay course guide.
For a change of scene, Coyote Springs is a Nicklaus course 67 minutes north, and Mesquite is about 92 minutes up I-15. See the Coyote Springs course guide and our guides to Las Vegas winter golf for snowbirds, the snowbird golf schedule for Las Vegas, Las Vegas golf resident rates and flights to Las Vegas for golf.
Other Lie of the Land towns cover the same questions: Calgary and Edmonton to Mesquite, Canadian snowbirds in Arizona, Canadian snowbirds in Palm Springs and Canadian snowbirds in Laughlin.
