Direction and drive time from downtown: A Mesquite and St. George Golf Itinerary: How to Split the Stay

The simplest Mesquite and St. George golf itinerary is two bases: three nights in Mesquite for Wolf Creek, Oasis and Conestoga, then two or three nights in St. George, about 40 to 45 minutes up I-15. Fly into Las Vegas, play Mesquite first, and fly home from St. George or drive back, so you only cross the Virgin River Gorge when you change hotels.

This guide covers the Mesquite half and the logistics of the split. For the St. George courses, use the St. George map and our St. George guides linked below. To weigh the two towns against each other first, see Mesquite vs St. George golf.

Why split the stay instead of commuting

You can play Mesquite golf as a day trip from St. George, and our Mesquite golf day trip from St. George guide shows how. But for more than one Mesquite round, a split stay is easier for three reasons:

  1. The drive. I-15 between the two towns crosses about 29 miles of the Arizona Strip, much of it through the Virgin River Gorge, a narrow, winding canyon with trucks and frequent bridge or lane work. A crash or construction can close a lane and back traffic up for an hour, and the detour around a gorge closure is long. Doing that once is fine; doing it at dawn four mornings running is not.
  2. The clock. St. George is on Mountain Time and Mesquite is on Pacific, so St. George is one hour ahead all year. Mesquite tee times are Pacific. Commuting means every Mesquite tee time is an hour later on your phone than on the tee sheet.
  3. The rounds are long. Wolf Creek says rounds will most likely exceed five hours. Adding a gorge drive at each end makes a long day.

That is three Mesquite rounds, two or three St. George rounds, one hotel change and one gorge crossing. Our 5-day St. George and Mesquite golf itinerary runs the same idea from the St. George side.

The Mesquite half: three rounds to book

Oasis Palmer, arrival afternoon. A short Arnold Palmer target course (6,442 yards from the Black tees, 71.5/138, par 71), 2 to 4 minutes from the central hotels. October 2026 online rates were $190 mornings and $130 from about 1 PM. The harder sister, Oasis Canyons, shares the clubhouse and prices.

Wolf Creek, day 2. Mesquite's showpiece, with ridge-top tees and drops of nearly 100 feet. Late-October 2026 mornings were $360 weekdays and $390 weekends on the live engine. Play the Champions (6,153 yards, 71.1/140) or Masters (5,683, 69.0/133) tees unless you are a low single-digit player. There is also a Wolf Creek guide written for golfers based in St. George, and the Wolf Creek course guide has the hole data.

Conestoga, day 3. Golf Digest's #20 in Nevada, inside Sun City Mesquite, with a published 2026 public band of $205 to $300 in spring and fall and live prices up to $318 on some late-October 2026 days. Public times open 55 days out and go fast. After a morning round you can be in St. George by mid-afternoon.

Swap-ins: Palms ($134 mornings in fall 2026) is just across the Arizona line in Littlefield, and Falcon Ridge ($185 to $203.04 mornings in fall 2026) has plateau tees at a friendlier 6,303 yards.

Which order: Mesquite first or St. George first?

Mesquite first usually wins if you fly into Las Vegas, because Mesquite is on the way: about 91 miles from LAS, then 40 to 45 more minutes to St. George. Coming from Utah? The Salt Lake City to Mesquite golf guide covers the drive and flights to SGU.

Plan Fly in Fly out Gorge crossings
Mesquite firstLASSGU1
Mesquite firstLASLAS2
St. George firstSGULAS1
St. George firstSGUSGU2

LAS is the usual choice: far more flights and usually cheaper fares than SGU, on the same Pacific clock as Mesquite. SGU has regional jets only, to Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix (American Eagle), Salt Lake City (Delta Connection), and Denver and Los Angeles (United Express), with seasonal Chicago-O'Hare, as listed in October 2026. Routes change, so check the airlines. SGU is on Mountain Time, so an SGU departure time is an hour ahead of the Mesquite clock you have been living on. The Mesquite St. George time difference guide shows how to book tee times on both clocks.

Getting the time change right

This is the mistake that costs split-stay groups a tee time. The rules:

  • Mesquite is Pacific Time, same as Las Vegas.
  • St. George is Mountain Time, one hour ahead of Mesquite all year.
  • Littlefield and Beaver Dam, Arizona (on the I-15 route, and home to Palms) keep Arizona time all year: the same as Mesquite until Nov 1, 2026, then one hour ahead until Mar 14, 2027.

If you stay in St. George and drive down for a 9:00 AM Mesquite tee time, leave St. George by about 8:45 AM on the St. George clock. That is 7:45 Mesquite time, which with 40 to 45 minutes of driving gets you there around 8:30 Pacific. Phones near the state lines can pick up an Arizona or Utah tower and show the wrong time, so set the clock manually if in doubt. Our Mesquite time zone guide for golfers has the full table.

Where to stay on the Mesquite side

For a split stay, a hotel near the I-15 exits makes the move to St. George quick.

Eureka's golf desk books the Mesquite courses, six St. George courses and Coyote Springs, which is handy for a split trip booked in one call (quotes on request, no package prices posted). The Best Western and Holiday Inn Resort are smoke-free, casino-free options on Sandhill Blvd, by the main I-15 exit. See Mesquite golf hotels for rates and watch-outs.

When to do a split trip

  • March and April: the best weather in Mesquite (normal highs 74.5F in March, 82.3F in April) and the top rates. Washington County, Utah spring break is Mar 8 to 12, 2027, and Easter is Mar 28, 2027, the heaviest family travel of the year in the corridor. Book early.
  • October: courses reopen on fresh rye after overseed. In 2026 Wolf Creek reopened Oct 3, Oasis Canyons Oct 1 and Oasis Palmer Oct 7. The Huntsman World Senior Games (Oct 5 to 17, 2026) fill St. George lodging for two weeks, so check dates first.
  • Winter: Mesquite runs several degrees warmer than St. George in winter, with normal highs around 60 to 62F in December and January. A split trip in winter can lean toward more Mesquite nights.
  • September: avoid it. Most Mesquite courses close in turn for overseed, and on the latest published dates roughly Sep 14 to 26 had no 18-hole course open in town.

A note for St. George locals

If you live in Washington County, Utah, some Mesquite courses treat you as a local. Oasis gives its resident rate to verified Clark County, Nevada and Washington County, Utah residents, booked within 30 days with ID checked at the shop (the amount is not published; call 702-346-7820). Coyote Springs gives resident pricing to Washington County residents with a Utah driver's license; a utility bill will not work.

Questions golfers ask

How far is Mesquite from St. George for golf?

About 40 to 45 minutes up I-15. The route crosses about 29 miles of the Arizona Strip, much of it through the Virgin River Gorge, where crashes or lane work can back traffic up. Hotel records put St. George about 40 to 43 minutes from the central Mesquite hotels.

Is St. George on a different time zone from Mesquite?

Yes. St. George is on Mountain Time and is one hour ahead of Mesquite all year. Mesquite tee times are Pacific, so a 9:00 tee time in Mesquite is 10:00 on a St. George clock.

Should I fly into Las Vegas or St. George for a Mesquite and St. George trip?

Las Vegas (LAS) has far more flights and usually cheaper fares, and it is about 91 miles from Mesquite. St. George Regional (SGU) has regional jets to Dallas/Fort Worth, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver and Los Angeles, and is about 54 minutes from Mesquite. Flying into LAS and out of SGU avoids driving the same road twice.

Do St. George residents get a discount at Mesquite golf courses?

At some. Oasis Golf Club gives its resident rate to verified Washington County, Utah residents (book within 30 days, ID at check-in, amount not published). Coyote Springs also gives resident pricing to Washington County residents with a Utah driver's license.

Which Mesquite courses should I play on a split stay?

Wolf Creek is the must-play, ranked #5 in Nevada and #59 on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Public Courses. Add Oasis Palmer or Canyons and Conestoga for a three-round Mesquite half.
