Direction and drive time from downtown: Salt Lake City to Mesquite Golf: Drive I-15, or Fly to St. George and Combine the Two

A Salt Lake City to Mesquite golf trip is usually easiest by car: it is 340 miles and about 4 hr 56 min on I-15 by Google Maps, and Mesquite is an hour behind Utah, so you gain that hour on the way down. The alternative is a 1 hr 10 min Delta nonstop to St. George, then 54 minutes by car.

Either way you pass straight through St. George, which makes it easy to split the trip between the two towns.

Quick facts

  • Drive: 340 miles, 4 hr 56 min by Google Maps (OSRM: 340.5 miles, 5 hr 47 min free-flow).
  • Fly: Delta Connection SLC to SGU, daily, 1 hr 10 min; round trips from US$238 (Nov 19-22, 2026) when checked.
  • SGU to Mesquite: 42.2 miles, about 54 minutes by router.
  • Clock: Mesquite is Pacific, one hour behind Salt Lake City and St. George all year.
  • St. George to Mesquite: about 40 to 45 minutes down I-15 through the Virgin River Gorge.
  • Resident deals: for Washington County, not Salt Lake County.

For a group of four with clubs, driving is hard to beat: one car, no bag fees, and the car is useful in Mesquite, where the courses are spread around town and across the Arizona line. Flying makes sense for one or two players, or if you only have a Mesquite golf weekend. The number of daily SLC to SGU flights was not shown on Google Flights.

The drive down I-15

It is I-15 the whole way: south through Provo, Cedar City and St. George, then through the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona to Mesquite.

Three things to plan for:

  • The hour you gain. Mesquite is on Pacific Time, one hour behind Salt Lake City all year. Leave Salt Lake at 8:00 AM, drive about five hours, and it is around noon in Mesquite, not 1:00 PM. That makes an afternoon tee time on arrival day realistic. Our Mesquite St. George time difference guide has more worked examples.
  • The Virgin River Gorge. I-15 crosses the Arizona Strip for about 29 miles, much of it through a narrow, winding canyon with tight curves, trucks and frequent bridge or lane work. A crash or construction can back traffic up for an hour, and the detour is long. Check az511.gov before you go and drive it in daylight if you can.
  • Memorial Day and holiday weekends. Holiday traffic on I-15 between Las Vegas, Mesquite, St. George and Zion is heavy, with busy Fridays northbound and Mondays southbound through the gorge (Memorial Day is May 31, 2027).

If you want a round on the way, Cedar City is on the route; see the St. George site's Cedar City golf guide.

Flying Salt Lake City to St. George

Google Flights lists Delta Connection (operated by SkyWest) as the only nonstop airline from Salt Lake City to St. George, with direct flights every day and a fastest time of 1 hr 10 min. It showed nonstop round trips from US$238 for Nov 19-22, 2026 and typical January round trips of US$235 to $340.

St. George Regional has rental cars at the terminal. From SGU it is 42.2 miles and about 54 minutes by router south on I-15 to Mesquite, and the clocks go back one hour on the way. SGU is on Mountain Time, so a 5:00 PM departure there is 4:00 PM in Mesquite; leave your last round with that in mind. For more on that airport, see flying to St. George for golf.

Combine Mesquite with St. George

Because you drive through St. George anyway, the natural plan is a few nights in each. Mesquite's draw is its desert canyon courses and cheap casino-hotel rooms; St. George has more courses and the city-run tracks with low green fees.

A sample of what each side charged (seen October 2026 for Mesquite; St. George figures from the St. George atlas, sampled October 2026):

Course Town Rate
Wolf CreekMesquite$360 weekday / $390 weekend mornings, late Oct 2026
Oasis Palmer and CanyonsMesquite$190 mornings, $130 after, fall 2026
Falcon RidgeMesquite$185 mornings, Nov 3-18, 2026
ConestogaMesquite$205-$300 published fall band; $315-$318 live on some late-Oct days
SunbrookSt. George$88 with cart, Oct-May (city rate)
St. George Golf ClubSt. George$64 with cart, Oct-May (city rate)
SunRiverSt. George$105 Mon-Thu / $115 Fri-Sun, Sep-May guest rate
Sand Hollow ChampionshipHurricane$305-$366 on Mar-Apr 2027 weekday mornings (dynamic)

Salt Lake golfers should know that the local deals on both sides are for Washington County, not the whole state. Oasis resident rates cover verified Clark County, Nevada and Washington County, Utah residents. Coyote Springs accepts a Washington County, Utah driver's license for resident pricing. The St. George city loyalty card needs a Utah ID with a Washington County address. A Salt Lake address qualifies for none of them.

Wolf Creek is the round to build the drive around: Golf Digest has it #5 in Nevada and #59 on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26). Play the Champions or Masters tees unless you are a genuine low single-digit player, and budget five-plus hours. The Wolf Creek course guide has the detail.

The two Oasis courses share a clubhouse, so they are an easy 36 on arrival or departure day; see the Oasis course guide. Coyote Springs is the other way, about an hour southwest, and is the one 18-hole course in the area that does not close for fall overseed.

A sample Salt Lake City to Mesquite golf trip

Three days, driving, with St. George on the way home. Rates seen October 2026 for fall 2026 dates.

Day Plan Rate seen
1Leave Salt Lake around 7:00 AM Mountain; arrive about 11:00 AM Pacific; afternoon round at Oasis Palmer$130 after about 1 PM (October)
2Wolf Creek in the morning$360 Mon-Thu / $390 Fri-Sun
3Oasis Canyons or Falcon Ridge early, then north to St. George for an afternoon round, or straight homeOasis $190; Falcon Ridge $185-$203.04 mornings

On day 3 you lose the hour back: a noon Pacific finish in Mesquite is 1:00 PM in St. George, and Salt Lake is still roughly four hours beyond it (the full drive is 4 hr 56 min, and St. George is the first 40 to 45 minutes of it heading north). Splitting the Salt Lake City to Mesquite golf drive with a night in St. George makes the last day far less rushed.

When to make the trip

Mesquite runs warmer than St. George in winter (normal January highs of 61.7F at the Beaver Dam station near Mesquite, against 54.0F in St. George), which makes December to February a good time to head south. February to April is peak season and March is the tightest month, with Washington County spring break Mar 8 to 12, 2027 and Easter on Mar 28, 2027.

Avoid September unless you check closures: Mesquite's 18-hole courses close in turn for overseed, leaving roughly Sep 14 to 26 with none open on the stored dates. Our best time to golf in Mesquite guide has the month-by-month view.

Where to stay

For a drive-in trip, the casino resorts are close to everything: Eureka Casino Resort is 6 minutes from Wolf Creek, and Virgin River Casino & Lodge showed $46.80 Sunday-to-Thursday rooms for Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 with no resort fee (seen October 2026). If you would rather skip the casino, the Holiday Inn Resort Mesquite is smoke-free and non-gaming, with free parking for RVs and group vehicles. Mesquite golf hotels compares them all.
