What the numbers mean for a round:
- Winter (December to February): Gulf Shores is 5 to 11 degrees warmer by day and 13 to 17 degrees warmer at dawn, so you can tee off early. St. George has frosty starts (lows around 28F) that push tee times to mid-morning, but afternoons are calm (3 to 5 mph), while the Gulf breeze averages about 7 mph.
- Spring (March to May): similar highs, both breezy. St. George is drier, with 3 to 4.5 rain days a month against 6.6 to 7.7 at the coast.
- Summer (June to August): Gulf Shores tops out near 89F but is humid with storms on 11 to 13 days a month. St. George reaches about 102F in July, nearly rain-free; it's dawn-only golf.
- October: a tie. Both average about 79F highs. Gulf Shores mornings are milder (60F vs 47F), and St. George is drier and calmer.

Turf: overseeded rye vs dormant bermuda
Turf is the biggest visual difference in Gulf Shores vs St. George golf.
St. George courses are bermudagrass that goes dormant in winter, so each fall they overseed with ryegrass to stay green. The courses close completely for about two weeks (St. George's city courses) to about a month (Mesquite) between early September and mid-October. In 2026 the city courses closed in turn from September 8 to October 6. Black Desert is bentgrass with no overseed, and Coral Canyon doesn't overseed. See the St. George overseed schedule.
Gulf Shores courses are mostly bermuda too, but overseeding is optional. Many let it go dormant (tan but playable) from about December to March, some overseed tees and fairways in October and November, and most aerify greens in summer, roughly June to August. Few publish a schedule. Peninsula says it keeps fairways, tees and greens green all winter, without saying how. Our guide to whether Gulf Shores courses are overseeded in winter goes course by course.
The practical result: a St. George trip in late September can hit closures, while a Gulf Shores trip in January will see brown fairways at some courses but no fall closures.
How do green fees compare?
| Tier | Gulf Shores (seen Oct 2026) | St. George (our St. George data, Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Top resort course | Lakewood, Grand Hotel: $205-$249 with cart | Black Desert: $450 non-guest / $325 guest (peak) |
| Top-ranked public | Kiva Dunes: $107.48-$174.77 | Sand Hollow Championship: $305-$366 (Mar-Apr 2027 weekdays) |
| Mid-range | Gulf Shores Golf Club: $139 morning, $99 twilight | Coral Canyon: about $135 peak, $115 winter |
| City / value | GlenLakes: $85.50 early to $37 after 3 pm | St. George GC / Southgate: $64 with cart, $44 walking (Oct-May) |
| Winter card | Craft Farms Six-Pack: $420 for 6 rounds | Green Spring 10-round punch card: $460 (undated, confirm) |
On green fees, Gulf Shores vs St. George golf splits by tier: St. George is cheaper at the bottom and pricier at the top. Its city courses are among the cheapest regulation golf in either town, especially with walking rates, and Washington County residents get a loyalty card discount. But its headline courses, Black Desert and Sand Hollow, cost two to three times what Kiva Dunes does. More detail in St. George green fees.
Gulf Shores' value is in winter cards and afternoons: the Craft Farms Six-Pack works out to about $70 a round (orders due November 15, 2026), and Kiva Dunes knocks $30 to $40 off after 1 or 2 pm.
Which has tougher golf courses?
| Gulf Shores area | Tips rating / slope | St. George area | Tips rating / slope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lost Key | 73.0 / 143 | Coral Canyon | 75.2 / 148 |
| Kiva Dunes | 74.9 / 142 | Wolf Creek (Mesquite) | 74.4 / 147 |
| Lakewood Dogwood | 75.2 / 141 | Copper Rock | 75.8 / 146 |
| Perdido Bay | 74.3 / 138 | Black Desert | 75.4 / 139 |
The challenge is different. Gulf Shores courses defend with wind, water and wetlands at sea level; Kiva Dunes' holes run east-west, so the Gulf breeze crosses nearly every fairway. St. George's defend with elevation change, forced carries and lava: Coral Canyon's front nine slopes 155 from the tips, and Black Desert's corridors run through black lava, where a miss is a lost ball. See the hardest golf courses in Gulf Shores and the Kiva Dunes course guide.
How spread out is the golf?

Gulf Shores golf runs along the coast. From central Gulf Shores, Gulf Shores Golf Club is 7 minutes, Craft Farms 12 and Peninsula 14, but Kiva Dunes is 24, Lost Key 33 and the Eastern Shore courses 46 to 63. Plan around one side of the map per day.
