Drive lines from central Gulf Shores: Flying to Gulf Shores for a Golf Trip: Which Airport, How Long a Drive, and What to Do With Your Clubs

For a Gulf Shores golf trip, fly into Pensacola (PNS). It has the most airlines and nonstops, and it's about 69 minutes by road to Gulf Shores and 56 to Orange Beach without traffic. Mobile Regional (MOB) is about 98 minutes away with regional jets only, and Mobile's new downtown terminal isn't expected to open until early 2027.

This guide covers which airport to fly to for a Gulf Shores golf trip, the drive in, the roads to avoid, and what to do with your clubs. Drive times are free-flow road estimates without traffic. Airline routes were read in October 2026 and change by season, so check with the airlines.

Why Pensacola wins for most golf trips

PNS has the widest choice. In October 2026 its route list included American (Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Washington-National, plus seasonal Chicago-O'Hare, New York-LaGuardia and Philadelphia), Delta (Atlanta, LaGuardia), United (Houston, Chicago-O'Hare, Denver) and Southwest (Dallas Love, Houston Hobby, Nashville, plus seasonal Austin, Baltimore, Chicago Midway, Denver, Kansas City and St. Louis, with Orlando from March 11, 2027). Breeze, Frontier and Contour add more. For snowbirds from the Midwest, the seasonal Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis flights matter.

It's also the closer airport to Orange Beach and to the two Florida-side courses. From PNS you can reach Orange Beach via Perdido Key (Hwy 292 / Perdido Beach Blvd), which avoids Hwy 59 entirely.

When Mobile makes sense

Mobile Regional (MOB) is in west Mobile and has regional jets only: American Eagle to Charlotte and Dallas/Fort Worth, Delta to Atlanta, and United Express to Houston and Washington-Dulles. At about 98 minutes from Gulf Shores, it rarely makes sense for a beach-only trip.

It does make sense if your trip leans west. Magnolia Grove, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail site, is also in west Mobile, about 96 minutes from Gulf Shores. The Grand Hotel's Lakewood courses in Point Clear are on the Mobile Bay side, about 51 minutes from Gulf Shores. A good open-jaw plan is in at PNS for the beach courses, out of Mobile after a round at Magnolia Grove. Our 5-day Gulf Shores and Eastern Shore golf itinerary is built that way.

The 2027 change. American, Delta and United plan to move from MOB to the new five-gate terminal at Mobile International (BFM, the former downtown airport) when it opens, now expected in early 2027. It will be about 20 minutes closer to the beaches than MOB. If you book 2027 travel, check which Mobile airport your ticket uses.

Mardi Gras. Mobile's parades run for about two weeks before Fat Tuesday (February 9, 2027), fill Mobile hotels and add I-10 traffic on parade weekends.

Panama City Beach and private flights

ECP has nonstops to cities PNS lacks, such as Columbus and Indianapolis, but it's more than three hours each way to the Alabama beaches. Only use it for a specific nonstop or fare.

Private flyers can use Jack Edwards National Airport (JKA) in Gulf Shores, a few minutes from town, which has no scheduled airline service.

The drive in: roads and traffic

  • Hwy 59 is the bottleneck. Summer Saturdays (condo changeover), holiday weekends and the National Shrimp Festival in October (canceled in 2026 because of Hurricane Isaias) bring bumper-to-bumper traffic from Foley to the beach. On Labor Day 2026, Hwy 59 was backed up near I-10 before 11 am. Arrive Friday or midweek.
  • Use the Beach Express roads. The Baldwin Beach Express links I-10 to the Foley Beach Express, bypassing most of Hwy 59. The Foley Beach Express bridge has been toll-free since May 2024.
  • From PNS to Orange Beach, the Perdido Key route skips Hwy 59 completely.
  • Add time at peak. The drive times on this page don't include traffic; add 20 to 60 minutes or more on summer Saturdays and festival weekends.

Golf on arrival day

The Florida-side courses sit on the Pensacola side of the beach. Lost Key is on Perdido Key, along the PNS route to Orange Beach, and 21 minutes from Orange Beach. Perdido Bay, a former PGA Tour site, is 22 minutes from Orange Beach. Lost Key showed $65 after 1 pm online in late October 2026, and Perdido Bay was $65 from 1 to 3 pm with a $50 twilight rate later in the day in its 2026 season. See Perdido Key golf.

If you're staying in Gulf Shores, Gulf Shores Golf Club is 7 minutes from central Gulf Shores, with twilight at $99 in October and November 2026 and $79 from 12:30 pm in early December.

Book tee times around your flight

Once you fly to Gulf Shores, the tee sheet is the next constraint, and booking windows vary a lot:

  • Kiva Dunes opens public times 120 days out, so you can book it as soon as you buy the flight.
  • Gulf Shores Golf Club opens 46 days out online.
  • GlenLakes opens 21 days out at midnight; its online times are prepaid and non-refundable, so wait until your flight is firm or book by phone.
  • Lost Key and Perdido Bay open 14 days out. Lost Key's sheet opens at midnight Central.
  • Lakewood and Magnolia Grove (RTJ Trail) take public advance bookings online only, up to 7 days out, but RTJ packages can be booked up to 12 months ahead.

If a delayed flight could cost you a round, the courses with flexible terms help: Kiva Dunes lets you cancel 48 hours or more ahead. Our Gulf Shores tee times booking guide has every course.

Rental car and parking

You'll want a car: the courses spread from Fort Morgan Road in the west to Perdido Key in the east, and Kiva Dunes alone is 24 minutes from central Gulf Shores. Budget for hotel parking, which varies a lot:

Hotel Parking (seen Oct 2026)
Embassy Suites Gulf Shores$30 self / $35 valet a night, plus a resort charge of about $46 a night with tax
The Lodge at Gulf State Park$15 self / $22 valet a day
Hampton Inn Orange Beach$15 a day, no in/out
Island HouseFree for one car
Perdido Beach ResortFree self-parking; valet $25 a night

Condos often cap cars per unit, so a group flying in should share vehicles. Our hotel guides have the full parking and fee detail for each property.

When roads and hotels are busiest

Spring break runs all of March and April and is the heaviest non-summer demand. Summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day) brings the highest lodging prices, while golf is in its low-rate season. Two Pensacola events affect PNS-side traffic: the Blue Angels' Pensacola Beach Air Show in July and the Homecoming Air Show at NAS Pensacola (November 6-7, 2026). Winter is quiet and mild, with highs of about 61 to 64F. See best time to golf in Gulf Shores.

Plan it on the map

Open the 3D map of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach golf, pick your hotel and check its drive to each course. If most of your tee times are in Orange Beach or on Perdido Key, fly to Pensacola; if they lean toward Mobile Bay, look at Mobile.

Questions golfers ask

What is the closest airport to Gulf Shores for a golf trip?

Pensacola International (PNS) in Florida is the practical choice: about 69 minutes by road to Gulf Shores and 56 to Orange Beach without traffic, with the most airlines. Jack Edwards National Airport in Gulf Shores is closer but has no scheduled airline service.

Should I fly into Mobile or Pensacola for Gulf Shores golf?

Pensacola for most trips. Mobile Regional (MOB) is about 98 minutes from Gulf Shores and has only regional jets to Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Atlanta, Houston and Washington-Dulles. Mobile makes more sense if your trip ends at Magnolia Grove, which is also in west Mobile.

Is Pensacola airport in a different time zone from Gulf Shores?

No. Pensacola is in Florida, but Pensacola, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Mobile are all on Central Time. Lost Key and Perdido Bay, on the Florida side, also run on Central Time.

Can I rent golf clubs in Gulf Shores?

Yes. Prices seen in October 2026: Kiva Dunes rents Titleist or TaylorMade sets for $75, Gulf Shores Golf Club Callaway sets for $50 for 18, Lost Key $79 for 18, GlenLakes $45 plus tax, and Orange Beach Golf Center $25. Craft Farms and Peninsula have new Titleist sets but don't publish prices.

Is the Foley Beach Express still a toll road?

No. The State of Alabama bought the Foley Beach Express bridge and ended tolls in May 2024, so older pages quoting a toll are out of date. A parallel new bridge was under construction, and its opening was unconfirmed as of October 2026.
