Guide emblem: How to Plan a Gulf Shores Golf Trip, Step by Step

A Gulf Shores golf trip works best in spring (March to May) or in October and November. Fly into Pensacola, about 69 minutes from Gulf Shores and 56 from Orange Beach. Stay near the courses you'll play most, build the trip around Kiva Dunes, Peninsula, Craft Farms and Gulf Shores Golf Club (all within 24 minutes of the beach), and book Kiva Dunes the day its 120-day window opens.

Below is the order we'd plan it in, with the facts that change each decision.

Step 1: Pick your Gulf Shores golf trip dates

Spring is the main golf season on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Using NOAA normals for Pensacola NAS, the nearest coastal station with full records, March highs are about 69°F and April about 75°F, and May runs about 82°F and is the driest month. Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism says the best tee times "can be hard to come by" in the busy spring and fall seasons. Book March weekends well ahead.

Fall is the second season. October highs average about 79°F with about seven rain days, and November about 70°F. December and January are mild and quiet (highs of 61 to 64°F), which is why snowbirds fill the area with long stays.

Three things to plan around:

  • Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the main risk from August to October. Hurricane Sally made landfall at Gulf Shores on Sept 16, 2020. For an August to October trip, read your lodging's cancellation terms closely.
  • Event weekends. The National Shrimp Festival in October is normally Gulf Shores' biggest fall weekend for hotels; the 2026 festival was canceled because of Hurricane Isaias, and 2027 dates aren't published yet. Spring break fills March and April, and Mardi Gras is Feb 9, 2027.
  • Summer. Green fees drop, but highs reach about 89°F with storms on about 13 days a month in July and August. Play at dawn.

Our best time to golf in Gulf Shores guide goes month by month.

Step 2: Fly into Pensacola

Pensacola International is the usual answer. It is in Florida but on Central time, the same as Gulf Shores. Drive times below are free-flow estimates and don't include traffic.

Airport Drive to Gulf Shores Drive to Orange Beach Notes (October 2026)
Pensacola (PNS)69 min, 38 mi56 min, 31 miAmerican, Delta, United, Southwest, Breeze, Frontier; most nonstops
Mobile Regional (MOB)98 min, 66 mi102 min, 73 miAmerican Eagle, Delta, United Express; regional jets only
Mobile International (BFM)79 min, 52 mi82 min, 59 miNo scheduled airline service yet; new terminal expected early 2027
Panama City Beach (ECP)205 min192 minOnly for a specific nonstop or fare

PNS nonstops listed in October 2026 include Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago-O'Hare, Dallas, Houston, Nashville and Denver, with seasonal service to St. Louis, Kansas City and others. Routes change by season, so check with the airlines.

If you're staying in Orange Beach, the drive from PNS through Perdido Key skips Hwy 59 entirely. Heading to Gulf Shores, the Foley Beach Express bridge has been toll-free since May 2024, so older pages quoting a toll are out of date. Our flying to Gulf Shores for golf post compares the airports in more detail.

How Gulf Shores golf is laid out

The beach courses sit in four groups, with two longer-range groups inland. Drive times are from central Gulf Shores (Hwy 59 and Beach Blvd) on our map's routing.

Area Courses Drive from central Gulf Shores
Hwy 59, Gulf ShoresGulf Shores Golf Club, Craft Farms Cotton Creek, Craft Farms Cypress Bend7–12 min
Fort Morgan RoadPeninsula, Kiva Dunes14–24 min
Foley and Orange BeachGlenLakes, Gulf Links (executive), Orange Beach Golf Center (par-3 nine)14–22 min
Perdido Key, FL and ElbertaLost Key, Perdido Bay, Soldiers Creek33–37 min
Eastern ShoreLakewood Azalea, Lakewood Dogwood, Quail Creek, Rock Creek, TimberCreek46–57 min
Mobile (RTJ Trail)Magnolia Grove Crossings and Falls96 min

Lost Key and Perdido Bay are much closer to Orange Beach: about 21 and 22 minutes. The full list with fees and slopes is in our guide to Gulf Shores golf courses.

Step 3: Choose a base near your courses

Where you sleep decides how long you drive each morning. Rates below were seen in October 2026 for specific dates and change constantly.

Fort Morgan Road, for Kiva Dunes and Peninsula. Kiva Dunes Beach Resort rents condos on the course, and renters who book direct get discounted golf and preferred tee times outside peak golf season. Gulf Shores Plantation is the cheaper beach condo option next door, with undated Vacasa averages of about $160 to $276 a night for one- and two-bedroom units. The catch is distance: Craft Farms is about 27 minutes from Kiva.

Central Gulf Shores, for Gulf Shores Golf Club and Craft Farms. The Hampton Inn Gulf Shores on Hwy 59 showed two-queen rooms from $133 and is about 3 minutes from Gulf Shores Golf Club. It's being renovated through Jan 15, 2027. On the beach, Embassy Suites Gulf Shores opened in July 2025 with two-queen suites that sleep six, but its resort charge (about $46 a night with tax) plus parking adds about $76 to $81 a night.

Craft Farms. The Courtyard Gulf Shores Craft Farms is about 5 minutes from the clubhouse, with search snapshots around $96 to $108 a night.

Orange Beach, for Lost Key and Perdido Bay. Perdido Beach Resort is the lodging partner named on Lost Key's site, about 18 minutes away, though no published package was found. It has usually closed for most of December, so check dates for a winter trip.

Point Clear, for the Grand Hotel's 36 holes. The Grand Hotel sits beside Lakewood's two courses on Mobile Bay. Add its 15% resort fee, and expect about 45 to 75 minutes to the beach courses.

Our Gulf Shores golf hotels post covers every option.

Step 4: Mix your courses

Most groups play three to five rounds. Here's how the main beach courses compare on price and booking. Prices were seen in October 2026 and include a cart unless noted.

Course Price seen Tee time window
Kiva Dunes$107–$175 by season and time120 days
Peninsula (27 holes)Winter from $89 (Nov 15–Mar 31), dynamicNot published
Gulf Shores Golf Club$139 morning, $99 twilight (Oct–Nov)46 days
Craft Farms (two 18s)Winter Six-Pack $70–$85 a roundNot published
GlenLakes$86 + tax before 1:52 PM; as low as $37 late21 days
Lost Key$80 online morning, $65 after 1 PM14 days
Perdido Bay$85 morning, $50 twilight (tax included)14 days

A few pairings save driving. Peninsula and Kiva Dunes are on the same road, so play them on the same trip out. Both Craft Farms 18s share one clubhouse, and one Six-Pack card covers both. Lost Key and Perdido Bay are about 9 minutes apart on the Florida side.

For a first trip, we'd play Kiva Dunes, Peninsula, one Craft Farms course and a Gulf Shores Golf Club twilight round. Add Lost Key if you're staying in Orange Beach. Our best golf courses in Gulf Shores ranking explains the order.

Step 5: Decide on a package or book it yourself

Packages exist here, and some are built around specific hotels:

  • Coastal Alabama Golf (251-968-5339) sells a Hampton Inn Stay & Play (three nights plus Cotton Creek, Cypress Bend and Peninsula) and a Courtyard Stay & Play (three nights plus Cypress Bend, Peninsula and Kiva Dunes). Both are double occupancy, have blackout dates and are priced on request.
  • Kiva Dunes (866-540-7100) builds Stay & Play packages for 2 to 100 golfers, mixing Kiva with Peninsula, Craft Farms or Gulf Shores Golf Club, and gives groups free Golf Genius scoring.
  • Peninsula and Craft Farms book 63 holes together for groups through Kevin Whitney (251-968-8009). Craft Farms also has The Bunkhouse, six bedrooms with two queens each, next to the first tee.
  • The RTJ Trail sells two-day-plus specials for Lakewood and Magnolia Grove. The cheapest is the Winter Swing, one round at each for $216 (Nov 16, 2026 to Mar 7, 2027).

Booking it yourself is usually simpler for a small group. Lost Key and GlenLakes priced their own online times below their posted rack rates in October 2026, and Peninsula says booking direct is always cheapest. Our Gulf Shores golf packages post compares the two approaches.

Step 6: Book tee times when windows open

Windows vary a lot, and the long ones matter most for spring:

  • Kiva Dunes: 120 days (Chronogolf), with a 48-hour cancellation rule.
  • Gulf Shores Golf Club: 46 days (foreUP), credit card required, four players per booking.
  • GlenLakes: 21 days, opening at midnight. Online times are prepaid and non-refundable.
  • Lost Key, Perdido Bay and Soldiers Creek: 14 days.
  • Lakewood and Magnolia Grove: 7 days, online only since June 1, 2026. RTJ Reservations takes packages up to 12 months out.
  • TimberCreek in Daphne: 180 days.

For a trip starting Mar 15, 2027, Kiva Dunes opens on Nov 15, 2026. Our guide to Gulf Shores tee times has every rule and a booking calendar.

Traffic tips that save your tee time

Hwy 59 is the bottleneck into Gulf Shores. Summer Saturdays (condo check-in and check-out day), holiday weekends and the Shrimp Festival bring bumper-to-bumper traffic from Foley to the beach. Labor Day 2026 had backups near I-10 before 11 a.m. Arrive on a Friday or midweek, or use the Baldwin and Foley Beach Express, which can also back up at peak times.

For an Eastern Shore round at Lakewood or Rock Creek, allow about an hour each way from Gulf Shores. Magnolia Grove is about an hour and a half, so it works better as a Mobile day or paired with Lakewood.

When should I avoid a Gulf Shores golf trip?

Watch out for August to October, the main hurricane risk window, and for big event weekends. The National Shrimp Festival in October normally draws roughly 250,000-300,000 visitors and gridlocks the south end of Hwy 59; the 2026 festival was canceled because of Hurricane Isaias, and 2027 dates aren't published yet. Summer Saturdays are condo changeover day and jam the roads into town.
