Slope ladder: The Hardest Golf Courses Gulf Shores Golfers Can Play, Ranked by USGA Slope

The hardest golf courses in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, by USGA slope from the back tees, are Lost Key (143), Kiva Dunes (142), Lakewood Dogwood (141) and Perdido Bay (138). Kiva Dunes has the highest course rating, 74.9 from 7,122 yards. Magnolia Grove Falls and TimberCreek tie at 137, and Steelwood (137) is private.

Slope tells you how much harder a course plays for a bogey golfer than for a scratch player; course rating is what a scratch golfer should shoot. Both come from the USGA database, checked October 22, 2026, unless noted. Drive times are free-flow estimates from central Gulf Shores (Hwy 59 and Beach Blvd) without traffic, and prices were seen October 2026 and change.

*Soldiers Creek's rating comes from the club's scorecard and isn't in the USGA database, so treat it as approximate. Steelwood in Loxley rates 75.2/137 from 7,032 yards but is private, members' guests only.

TimberCreek's other two combinations rate 136 (Magnolia/Dogwood) and 132 (Dogwood/Pines). Peninsula's other two combinations rate 133 (Marsh/Lakes) and 131 (Lakes/Cypress), and you can't choose which 18 you play there.

The order barely changes. Kiva Dunes and Lost Key stay hardest, and Dogwood is close behind. Lakewood Azalea sits a full 10 points below Dogwood at this length, so the Grand Hotel's two courses play very differently from the middle tees. The two Craft Farms courses also separate: Cypress Bend stays 4 points harder than Cotton Creek even though it's shorter.

The hardest golf courses in Gulf Shores and nearby, one by one

1. Lost Key Golf Club (143)

A coastal wetlands layout on Perdido Key with Sea Dwarf paspalum from tee to green. Water and marsh line many holes, with heavy sand and waste areas, and it's tight and penal off the tee. The 17th, a 430-yard par 4 from the Blues, has the longest forced carry on the course; the 2nd is a long par 3 to a 64-yard-deep green. For women it's the hardest course in the area by a distance: 78.1/150 from the Blues. Online rates were $80 before 1 pm and $65 after in late October 2026. See the Lost Key course page and our Lost Key guide.

2. Kiva Dunes (142)

Jerry Pate's links-style course at the far end of Fort Morgan Road has the highest course rating near the beach. Wind is the defense: the holes run east-west, so the breeze crosses nearly every fairway, and Golf Digest notes you often have to aim at trouble and let the wind bring the ball back. Reviewers say hidden water and bunkers catch first-timers. Fees ran $107 to $175 in fall and winter 2026-27. The Kiva Dunes course page has every hole.

3. Lakewood Dogwood (141)

The harder of the Grand Hotel's two courses, with a 144 front nine from the Purples. Three water-guarded par 3s (3, 8, 17), bulkheaded greens and a 238-yard par-3 13th. It hosted the 2021 USGA Senior Women's Amateur. Green fees with cart run $205 to $249. Our Lakewood Azalea vs Dogwood guide compares it tee by tee, and the Dogwood course page has the card.

4. Perdido Bay (138)

The former PGA Tour Pensacola Open venue (1978-1987) is long, narrow and flat, with more than half a dozen lakes. Its back nine is the hardest nine we found, rating 141 to 146 from the Blue and Gold tees. The 10th, 450 yards with a lake down the left, is the No. 1 handicap. Rates ran $50 to $85 with tax in 2026. See our Perdido Bay Golf Club guide and the Perdido Bay course page.

5. Magnolia Grove Falls and TimberCreek (137)

Falls is par 71 but rates 137, with a 142 back nine, water on 5, 7, 10 and 11, and a 582-yard 5th that's all carry if you go for it in two. TimberCreek's Pines/Magnolia combination is the longest public 18 in the area at 7,222 yards; its Magnolia front nine rates 141 when played first, and Magnolia #2 (448 yards) is the No. 1 handicap. Note that TimberCreek's online sheet only showed Dogwood/Pines rounds in October 2026 and March 2027, so call to ask for Magnolia. Our Magnolia Grove Crossings vs Falls and TimberCreek in Daphne guides cover both.

7. Rock Creek (136)

Earl Stone's rolling pine-and-hardwood course in Fairhope has unusual elevation change for coastal Alabama and a 139 back nine from the Golds. The 2nd drops 70 feet from tee to fairway, then asks for a forced carry over wetlands to a green held up by a 30-foot bulkhead.

How to play the hardest golf courses in Gulf Shores

  • Move up a tee. Do it at Kiva Dunes on windy days, and at Lost Key, Cypress Bend and Dogwood if you're a higher handicap. Lakewood's rated combo tees make in-between lengths easy.
  • Check the wind. March is the windiest month at the Gulf Shores airport (about 7.8 mph average) and July to September the calmest (about 5 mph). Kiva Dunes is the most exposed.
  • Bring balls. Water is in play on nearly every hole at Cypress Bend and on every hole of Peninsula's Lakes nine.
  • Use the yardage book. Kiva Dunes has a free PDF on its site; the Magnolia Grove and Lakewood books tell you where to lay up.

Questions golfers ask

What is the hardest golf course in Gulf Shores?

By USGA slope from the back tees, Lost Key Golf Club on Perdido Key is the hardest public course in the area at 143 (73.0 rating, 6,801 yards), just ahead of Kiva Dunes at 142 (74.9, 7,122 yards). Within Gulf Shores city limits, Kiva Dunes is the hardest. Lakewood Dogwood at the Grand Hotel is third at 141.

Is Kiva Dunes hard?

Yes. Kiva Dunes rates 74.9/142 from the 7,122-yard Gold tees and 72.0/137 from the 6,505-yard Blues, the highest rating of any course near the beach. The holes run east-west, so the Gulf wind crosses nearly every fairway, and lagoons, canals and dune grass punish misses.

What is the hardest course for a mid-handicapper in Gulf Shores?

From tees of about 6,300 to 6,700 yards, Kiva Dunes Blue (137) and Lost Key Blue (137) are the hardest, followed by Lakewood Dogwood Orange (136), Perdido Bay Blue (134) and Magnolia Grove Falls Orange (133). The easiest at that length are Soldiers Creek Blue (117, from the club's scorecard) and GlenLakes Blue (119).

Which course has the hardest back nine near Gulf Shores?

Perdido Bay's back nine rates the hardest we found: men's nine-hole slopes of 141 to 146 from the Blue and Gold tees, against 129 for the front from the Golds. Magnolia Grove Falls' back nine is 142 from the Purples and Rock Creek's back nine 139 from the Golds.

Is Lost Key harder than Kiva Dunes?

On slope, by one point: Lost Key is 143 from 6,801 yards and Kiva Dunes 142 from 7,122. Kiva has the higher course rating (74.9 vs 73.0) because it's longer, so it's harder for a scratch golfer, while Lost Key's tight, wet, sandy layout is slightly harder for a bogey golfer.

What is the hardest hole in Gulf Shores?

There's no official ranking, but the clubs name a few: Gulf Shores Golf Club calls its 601-yard par-5 7th the toughest par 5 in Baldwin County, Perdido Bay's 450-yard 10th is its No. 1 handicap with a lake down the left, and TimberCreek's 448-yard Magnolia #2 is widely called its toughest. Lakewood Dogwood's 13th is a 238-yard par 3.

Not all of them. Lost Key's online rate was $80 before 1 pm and $65 after in late October 2026, and Perdido Bay's 2026 rates ran $50 to $85 with tax. Kiva Dunes ($107 to $175) and Lakewood ($205 to $249 with cart) are the expensive ones. Prices change.
