One flag per course: Easy Golf Courses: Gulf Shores for High Handicappers, With Low Slopes, Short Tees and Fewer Lost Balls

Easy golf courses in Gulf Shores for high handicappers start with GlenLakes in Foley (slope 115 from 5,854 yards), Gulf Shores Golf Club's forward tees (107 to 114) and Peninsula's Apple tees (107 to 109). For beginners, the Orange Beach Golf Center's par-3 nine costs $15 walking. Avoid Cypress Bend and Kiva Dunes until you can keep it dry.

Slope measures how much harder a course plays for a bogey golfer than for a scratch player, so it's the number a high handicapper should look at. All ratings below are USGA figures checked October 22, 2026, unless noted. Prices were seen in October 2026 and change. Drive times are free-flow estimates from central Gulf Shores (Hwy 59 and Beach Blvd) without traffic.

  • Most forgiving layout: Soldiers Creek, wide fairways and water on only two holes (conditions are poor).

*Soldiers Creek's rating is from the club's scorecard, not the USGA database, so treat it as approximate. Peninsula's other two combinations rate 119 and 120 from the #3 tees, and you can't choose your nines.

Quail Creek's Whites are its back tees; its Golds (5,570 yards, 67.0/112) are the better fit for most high handicappers.

Two things stand out. Lost Key, the hardest course in the area from the tips, becomes one of the friendliest from the front: its Gold tees rate 110 and its Orange tees, at 4,071 yards, just 100. And Rock Creek and Magnolia Grove stay relatively tough even from their shortest sets. For the other end of the scale, see our hardest golf courses in Gulf Shores ranking.

Women's ratings at the shortest tees: GlenLakes Purple 64.5/98 (4,255 yards), Craft Farms Red Senior 63.1/102 (Cotton Creek, 3,910 yards), Lakewood Azalea Red 66.5/109, Gulf Shores Golf Club Red 67.9/114 and Lost Key Orange 64.6/113. Which of the easy golf courses in Gulf Shores is best for high handicappers?

GlenLakes, Foley

The best all-round choice. The Dunes-Vista 18 rates 115 from the Whites and drops to 109 at the Reds and 101 at the 4,255-yard Purples. It's inland, so there's less wind than at the Fort Morgan courses. The catch is the Scottish-style mounding and heavy bunkering, and its front nine is the harder half (131 from the Blacks against 119 for the back). Online rates fell to $49.25 from about 1:40 pm and $37 after 3 pm on October 27, 2026, so a high handicapper can play a lot of golf for little money. The GlenLakes course page has every tee, and our GlenLakes Golf Club guide covers booking.

Gulf Shores Golf Club

The closest regulation course to the beach, 7 minutes away. From the back it's a 127 slope with water on many holes, but its forward tees are easy: Green 114 and Red 107 for men. The club targets a four-hour round and uses rangers, which helps when you're not the fastest group. Twilight was $99 from about 1:30 pm in October and November 2026 and $79 from 12:30 pm in early December. See the Gulf Shores Golf Club course page.

Peninsula's forward tees

Peninsula's three nines are hard from the back, but the Apple tees (5,290 to 5,316 yards, slopes 107 to 109) and #4 tees (4,941 to 4,965, slopes 103 to 106) are among the gentlest in the area. Be aware that the Lakes nine has water on every hole, and the superintendent picks which two nines you play.

Quail Creek, Fairhope

Fairhope's city course is flat and open, with three lakes and 40-plus bunkers, rating 70.5/120 from 6,280 yards and 64.8/106 from the Greens. City rules ask for 18 holes in four hours at most, and walking is allowed except during leagues and events. No current daily rate card is online, so call 251-990-0240. It's 46 minutes from Gulf Shores. The Quail Creek course page and our Quail Creek Golf Course in Fairhope guide explain the greens conversion.

Soldiers Creek, Elberta

The most forgiving layout by design: wide fairways and only two water holes, at $65 with cart before 1 pm and $49 after. But recent reviews describe weedy greens and bare fairways. Read our Soldiers Creek Golf Club guide before you book the 37-minute drive.

The Orange Beach Golf Center is the simplest place to start: a city par-3 nine open 8 am to 5 pm daily, no tee times, flat rates all year, $25 rental clubs and a lighted range open until 9 pm. Our Orange Beach Golf Center guide has the details. Magnolia Grove's Short Course is the most serious of the four, 18 full-length par 3s over marsh, and is 96 minutes from Gulf Shores.

Which courses aren't easy golf courses in Gulf Shores for high handicappers?

  • Craft Farms Cypress Bend: wide landing areas, but water on nearly every hole, and a higher slope than Cotton Creek at every tee. Pick Cotton Creek if you're choosing one.
  • Kiva Dunes from the Blues: 137 slope, constant crosswinds, lagoons and canals. Its Green tees (116) are manageable; anything longer is a long day.
  • Lost Key from the Whites or longer: 128 to 143, tight and penal. From the Gold or Orange tees, it's fine.
  • Lakewood Dogwood: 117 from the Teals versus 110 on Azalea, with water-guarded par 3s.

How to make golf in Gulf Shores easier for high handicappers

  • Play inland when it's windy. March averages about 7.8 mph at the Gulf Shores airport. GlenLakes and Craft Farms, inland off Hwy 59, get less wind than Kiva Dunes.
  • Play twilight. Fewer groups behind you and lower prices: about $30 to $40 off at Kiva, $99 or $79 at Gulf Shores Golf Club, $37 to $49 at GlenLakes.
  • Warm up properly. The Orange Beach Golf Center range is $5 for 34 balls; Gulf Shores Golf Club's range pass is $25 with unlimited balls; Craft Farms charges $10 a bag.
  • Take a lesson. Gulf Shores Golf Club works with Schuessler Golf Academy, Craft Farms with Jenkins Golf Academy, and the Orange Beach Golf Center runs lessons and camps.

If you're planning around a partner who is newer to the game, our couples golf trip to Gulf Shores guide pairs easy and harder courses, and cheap golf in Gulf Shores lists every twilight and local rate.

Questions golfers ask

What is the easiest golf course in Gulf Shores?

Among regulation 18-hole courses near the beach, GlenLakes in Foley has the lowest USGA slope from its white tees (115 from 5,854 yards) and Gulf Shores Golf Club's forward tees are gentle (107 to 114). For true beginners, the Orange Beach Golf Center's par-3 nine ($15 walking) and Gulf Links' par-64 executive 18 in Foley are easier still.

Which Gulf Shores golf course is best for a high handicapper?

GlenLakes is the best all-round pick: 115 slope from the 5,854-yard Whites, less wind than the beach courses, and afternoon rates as low as $37 in October 2026. Peninsula's #3 and Apple tees (slopes 107 to 120) and Craft Farms Cotton Creek's White tees (118) are good next steps up.

Are there par-3 courses in Gulf Shores?

Yes. The Orange Beach Golf Center is a city-run par-3 nine, $20 with cart or $15 walking for 9 holes, first come, first served, with a lighted range. Magnolia Grove in Mobile has an 18-hole par-3 Short Course (1,829 to 3,140 yards), and ONE CLUB near Craft Farms is a 2,298-yard executive nine.

Which Gulf Shores courses should beginners avoid?

Craft Farms Cypress Bend has water in play on nearly every hole, Peninsula's Lakes nine has water on every hole, and Kiva Dunes adds constant crosswinds to lagoons and canals. Lost Key is tight, wet and sandy from the back, though its Orange tees (4,071 yards) rate only 100. Rock Creek and Magnolia Grove stay relatively hard even from the forward tees.

What tees should a high handicapper play in Gulf Shores?

Most high handicappers will be happiest between about 5,000 and 5,800 yards. That's the White tees at GlenLakes (5,854) and Soldiers Creek (5,855), Peninsula's #3 or Apple tees, the Silver tees at Craft Farms (5,438 to 5,458), or the Green tees at Gulf Shores Golf Club (5,420).

Is Soldiers Creek easy?

On paper, yes: wide fairways, water on only two holes, and a 119 slope from 7,001 yards (from the club's scorecard, not the USGA). But reviews from August to October 2026 reported weedy greens and bare, hard fairways, so play it for price and forgiveness rather than conditions.

Where can a beginner practice golf in Gulf Shores?

The Orange Beach Golf Center has a lighted range open until 9 pm with 30 grass and 10 covered mat tees, at $5 for 34 balls, plus putting and chipping greens and lessons. Gulf Shores Golf Club sells a $25 range-only pass with unlimited balls. Craft Farms has a range with target greens at $10 a bag.
