Contour art: Are Gulf Shores Golf Courses Overseeded in Winter? Dormant Bermuda, Course by Course

Are Gulf Shores golf courses overseeded in winter? Mostly not, as far as the courses publish. Gulf Coast courses are mostly bermudagrass, and many let it go dormant, tan but playable, from about December to March. Some overseed tees and fairways with ryegrass in October and November. Peninsula says its turf stays green all winter.

That surprises golfers who know desert winter golf, where rye overseed is standard. Here's what's actually published for each course, what dormant courses are like to play, and when the summer aeration dates fall.

Quick facts

  • Main grass: bermudagrass on nearly every course; Lost Key is seashore paspalum.
  • Dormant season: about December to March, tan but playable.
  • Overseeding: optional here, done by some courses on tees and fairways in October and November.
  • Published as green all winter: Peninsula (method not stated). ONE CLUB lists rye fairways on GolfNow.
  • Aeration: mostly June to August; Magnolia Grove also has March 2027 greens dates.
  • Area-wide schedule: none exists.

Are Gulf Shores golf courses overseeded in winter? The short answer

Going by course websites, booking listings and recent reviews checked in October 2026, only one regulation course, Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club, says its turf stays green through winter. One executive nine, ONE CLUB, is listed with winter rye fairways. A couple of others have review evidence of dormant turf. Everyone else publishes nothing about winter turf.

So the honest answer is: assume a Gulf Shores course will be dormant and tan from December to about March unless it tells you otherwise, and ask the shop when you book.

What each course publishes about winter turf

Turf types are from course sites and booking listings; the winter column is exactly what was found in October 2026.

Peninsula's green-winter claim

Peninsula's 2026-27 winter page says it keeps "fairways, tees, and greens lush and green all winter long," unlike other local courses. It also says its sand base drains fast, so there are no cart-path-only days. It doesn't say whether that means rye overseed or colorant. The club's winter rates run November 15, 2026 to March 31, 2027, dynamic from $89. If green fairways matter to you, it's the obvious pick; see the Peninsula course guide.

Lost Key's paspalum

Lost Key on Perdido Key is the area's odd one out: Sea Dwarf seashore paspalum from tee to green. It drew top conditioning marks in reviews in September and October 2026. How it looks in winter isn't published. The club says carts may be kept to paths in late fall and winter, while a July 2026 Coastal Lifestyle article said it's "never cart-path only," so check on the day.

What do Gulf Shores courses look like from December to February?

On a course that doesn't overseed, the bermuda turns tan from about December and stays that way until it greens up in spring, around March. The courses remain open and playable throughout.

What else to expect in those months:

  • Weather: coastal highs of 61 to 64°F and lows of 42 to 45°F (NOAA normals, Pensacola NAS), with rain on 8 to 9 days a month.
  • Firm turf: the Perdido Bay review summary notes dormant grass and hard greens in winter.
  • Frost on the Eastern Shore: NOAA's Fairhope station averages winter lows of about 37 to 40°F, so frost delays are possible at Lakewood, Rock Creek, Quail Creek and the Daphne courses.
  • Soldiers Creek conditions: one review said its greens had recovered from winter storm damage, and reviews from August to October 2026 described weedy greens and bare fairways.

The month-by-month picture is in Gulf Shores golf weather by month, and the months themselves in golf in Gulf Shores in January and golf in Gulf Shores in November.

When are greens aerated? The published dates

Aeration, not overseeding, is the maintenance event most likely to affect your round, and it mostly happens in summer. The RTJ Trail is the only group that publishes a calendar.

Course 2026 2027 Recovery
Lakewood DogwoodJun 1-7Jun 7-11About 14 days

Magnolia Grove Short CourseNot postedTees, greens and rough May 24-28; greens Aug 2-614 days each

RTJ says schedules are weather dependent. Lakewood also has weekly maintenance days, Monday on Azalea and Tuesday on Dogwood, and RTJ ranges close for part of every Tuesday.

Quail Creek's greens conversion

Quail Creek, Fairhope's city course, has been converting its greens to TifEagle: the front nine in 2025, with the back nine scheduled from May 2026. The course stays open during the work, playing temporary greens on the affected nine with 8-inch cups and an automatic two-putt local rule. It also opens at 11 AM every Thursday for maintenance. Check the city's page for the current status before you go.

Does dormant grass mean cheaper golf?

Courses don't say they discount for turf, but winter is the cheapest season at the courses that price by season. Rates seen in October 2026:

Course Fall rate Winter rate Winter dates
Kiva Dunes, before about 1-2 PM$174.77 (late Oct)$130.84Dec 2026-Jan 2027

In practice you trade tan fairways for roughly 10 to 30 percent off. For snowbirds playing several times a week, the Six-Pack and snowbird cards are covered in snowbird golf in Gulf Shores and golf in Gulf Shores in winter.

Which months are best if you want green fairways?

If the answer to "are Gulf Shores golf courses overseeded in winter" is mostly no, the fix is to move the trip. Going by the published turf calendar:

  • October and November come before most bermuda goes dormant. They're also mild, with coastal highs of about 79°F and 70°F. See golf in Gulf Shores in October.
  • April and May come after the dormant stretch ends around March, with highs of about 75 to 82°F, though April is peak season for green fees.
  • December to February is the dormant season. Peninsula is the one regulation course that says it stays green then.

Early March sits on the edge: some courses may still be tan, and Magnolia Grove has greens aeration on its Falls and Crossings courses in the weeks from March 8 and March 15, 2027.

What to ask the pro shop before a winter booking

  1. Are your fairways and tees overseeded this winter, or dormant?
  2. Are carts restricted to paths, and is that likely on my date?
  3. Are any greens, tees or nines closed for maintenance or renovation?
  4. Is there a weekly maintenance day or a late opening?
  5. On the Eastern Shore: what time do frost delays usually lift?

If green grass is a must, start with Peninsula and confirm. If price matters more, the dormant courses are just as open, and winter rates are the lowest of the year. Weigh it against the other seasons in the best time to golf in Gulf Shores.
