Contour art: Golf in Gulf Shores in Winter: What December to February Is Really Like

Golf in Gulf Shores in winter is mild, quiet and cheap: December to February highs average about 61 to 64°F at the coast, the public courses stay open, and green fees are at or near their lowest of the year. The trade-off is turf. Many courses let their bermuda go dormant and tan, and January is breezy, so pick courses for conditions and plan on mid-day tee times.

That's the pitch for snowbirds from the Midwest and Canada, and for anyone who wants Gulf Shores golf without spring-break crowds. Here's what the season looks like, what it costs and where to play.

What golf in Gulf Shores in winter feels like

Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan have no weather station with published 30-year normals. The nearest coastal station that does is Pensacola NAS, on Pensacola Bay about 24 miles east of Gulf Shores. These are its NOAA 1991-2020 normals. Wind is the average daily speed at Jack Edwards Airport in Gulf Shores, 2016-2025.

Month Normal high Normal low Rain (in) Rain days Avg wind Gulf water
December64°F45°F3.857.76.4 mph61°F
January61°F42°F4.469.17.1 mph57°F
February64°F45°F4.048.37.3 mph61°F

Water temperatures are averages from NOAA's Pensacola gauge, 2016-2025; the open Gulf can differ by a few degrees.

January is the coolest month at the coast and the wettest of the three, with rain on about nine days. Afternoons in the low 60s are comfortable golf in a light layer. The first hour of a morning round, in the low 40s, is not.

The wind matters more here than the cold. January and February average about 7 mph, and only March is windier. At Kiva Dunes, Golf Digest notes the holes run east-west, so the breeze crosses nearly every fairway. Play one set of tees shorter than usual on a windy day.

Head inland and the nights get colder. NOAA's Fairhope station on the Eastern Shore averages January lows of about 37°F and December lows of about 39°F, and frost delays are possible there. Keep that in mind before booking an early tee time at the Grand Hotel or Fairhope courses.

Dormant bermuda: what the courses look like

Gulf Coast courses are mostly bermudagrass. Overseeding isn't standard here, as it is in the desert. Many courses let the bermuda go dormant, tan but playable, from about December to March. Some overseed tees and fairways with ryegrass in October and November. There is no area-wide schedule, and most courses don't publish theirs.

What the research found course by course:

  • Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club says it keeps fairways, tees and greens green all winter, unlike other local courses. It also says its sand base drains fast, with no cart-path-only days. It doesn't say whether that means rye or colorant, so confirm conditions when you book.
  • Perdido Bay: a review summary mentions dormant grass and hard greens in winter, which suggests the fairways are not overseeded. That is low-confidence.
  • Soldiers Creek: expect dormant bermuda in winter (not confirmed), and recent reviews on conditions are poor.
  • Lost Key is seashore paspalum from tee to green, which is unusual for the area. Its winter color isn't published, and the club says carts may be kept to paths in late fall and winter.
  • Kiva Dunes, Gulf Shores Golf Club, Craft Farms and GlenLakes publish no overseed practice. Call the shop.

Dormant bermuda gives you firm, fast fairways and extra roll. On the links-style holes at Kiva Dunes, with its low greens you can run the ball onto, that isn't a bad thing.

Winter dates and closures to plan around

Winter is quiet but not empty:

  • Holiday weeks. Thanksgiving (Nov 26, 2026) and the Christmas to New Year break bring family condo stays and busier courses, though rates stay at winter levels.
  • Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday is Feb 9, 2027. The Orange Beach parade closes Perdido Beach Boulevard for the afternoon, and Mobile's two weeks of parades fill Mobile hotels.
  • Orange Beach Seafood Festival & Car Show at The Wharf: Feb 27, 2027 is listed but not confirmed by the city.
  • Perdido Beach Resort has usually closed for most of December. It reopened Dec 30, 2025 under new owners, so check your dates.
  • Hampton Inn Gulf Shores is under renovation through Jan 15, 2027.
  • Kiva Beach Club, the private pool and beach for Kiva Dunes resort guests, opens March to November only.

Winter lodging costs

Winter is the low season for rooms, outside holiday weeks. Area condo companies offer discounted monthly snowbird rates, and Caribe Resort unit listings advertise low monthly rates from November to February. Weeknight snapshots seen in October 2026 (typical, not quotes):

What to pack

  • Layers: a warm mid-layer and a windproof shell for the morning, a polo for the afternoon. The normal gap between low and high is about 19°F.
  • Rain gear. January averages rain on about nine days.
  • Collared shirts. Kiva Dunes requires a collar and allows no denim of any kind, and Lost Key bans T-shirts and jeans whatever the weather.
