• Nov 16: RTJ winter specials begin at the Lakewood Club and Magnolia Grove: $180 a day at Lakewood, from $85 at Magnolia Grove, and the Winter Swing (one round at each) for $216, against $295 in fall.
• Dec 1: Lakewood's own 18-hole rate with cart drops from $226 to $205.

Course conditions in November

Gulf Coast courses are mostly bermudagrass. Some overseed tees and fairways with ryegrass in October and November; many let the bermuda go dormant and tan from about December. Most don't publish what they do. Peninsula says it keeps fairways, tees and greens green all winter, and that its sand base drains fast with no cart-path-only days. • Play one full round a day, starting between 8 and 10 AM, when the morning chill has lifted.
