January is the coolest month at the coast, so for golf in Gulf Shores in January the details matter more than in spring. Here's how to plan the day, where to play and what it costs.

Quick facts

  • Weather: normal high 61°F, low 42°F, 4.46 inches of rain on about 9.1 days (NOAA 1991-2020, Pensacola NAS).
  • Wind: about 7.1 mph average, breezier than any month from May to December.
  • Gulf water: about 57°F, the coldest of the year.

What is the weather like for golf in Gulf Shores in January?

Gulf Shores has no long-term weather station, so these are NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Pensacola NAS, on the coast about 24 miles east, and for Fairhope on the Eastern Shore. Wind is from Jack Edwards National Airport in Gulf Shores (2016-2025).

December January February
Coast high / low64 / 45°F61 / 42°F64 / 45°F
Fairhope high / low64 / 39°F62 / 37°F65 / 40°F
Coast rain / rain days3.85 in / 7.74.46 in / 9.14.04 in / 8.3
Fairhope rain days10.510.99.6
Average wind (Gulf Shores)6.4 mph7.1 mph7.3 mph

The normal gap between low and high is about 19°F at the coast and 25°F at Fairhope, so the first hour of an early tee time is the coldest part of the day.

Wind adds to the chill. At Kiva Dunes, Golf Digest notes the holes run east-west, so the breeze crosses nearly every fairway; play one set of tees forward on a windy day. Inland courses like Craft Farms and GlenLakes are more sheltered. For every month, see Gulf Shores golf weather by month.

  • Peninsula says it keeps fairways, tees and greens green all winter, unlike other local courses, and that its sand base drains fast with no cart-path-only days. It doesn't say whether that's rye or colorant; the Peninsula course guide has more.
  • ONE CLUB's GolfNow listing shows winter rye fairways on its executive nine.
  • Perdido Bay: a review summary mentions dormant grass and hard greens in winter (low confidence).
  • Lost Key is seashore paspalum, unusual for the area; its winter color isn't published, and the club says carts may be kept to paths in late fall and winter.
  • Most others, including Kiva Dunes, Gulf Shores Golf Club, Craft Farms and GlenLakes, don't publish a practice. Call the shop.
