Direction and drive time from downtown: Yuma vs Mesquite golf: warmer winters or bigger-name courses?

Choosing between Yuma and Mesquite for golf is warmth and price against pedigree. Yuma is about 8 degrees warmer on a January afternoon and 15 degrees warmer at dawn, and its full-length public 18s ran $35 to $75 with a cart in October 2026. Mesquite has Golf Digest-ranked courses and Las Vegas flights, but its winter rounds start at about $109.

Both towns fill with winter golfers, both sit in low desert, and both overseed their bermuda with rye so the fairways are green from fall to spring. After that they split in almost every way that matters to a snowbird or a buddies group. This guide compares them on weather, rates, passes, travel, clocks and overseed, then says who each one suits.

Quick facts

  • January normals: Yuma 69.8F high and 47.9F low; Mesquite (Beaver Dam station) 61.7F and 33.0F.
  • Full-length public 18s seen October 2026: Yuma $35-$75 with cart; Mesquite winter rates about $109-$230, and more on busy days.
  • Rankings: Wolf Creek is No. 59 on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26). No Yuma course lists a national ranking.
  • Airports: Mesquite is about 97 minutes from Las Vegas; Yuma is about 3 hours from Phoenix or San Diego.
  • Clocks: Yuma is one hour ahead of Mesquite from Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 14, 2027.
  • No Yuma-wide golf pass exists; passes are sold course by course.

Winter weather: Yuma or Mesquite

Both sets of figures are NOAA 1991-2020 normals. Yuma's come from the Yuma MCAS airfield station; Mesquite has no station with full normals, so the Mesquite map uses Beaver Dam, Arizona, about 8 miles away.

Month Yuma high / low Mesquite high / low Yuma rain Mesquite rain

March80.2F / 55.0F74.5F / 43.1F0.39 in0.87 in

The afternoon gap is 7 to 8 degrees in December, January and February. The morning gap is the bigger story: about 15 degrees. Mesquite's winter lows sit right around freezing, so the first tee times there can be held for frost and the best rounds start mid-morning. In Yuma a 7 AM start in January is chilly, in the high 40s, but frost is not normal. Yuma is also drier, with about 3.3 inches of rain in a whole year.

Summer is brutal in both. Yuma averages 106.7F in July and Mesquite 109.0F, so neither is a summer golf trip unless you only want dawn rounds at low prices.

Yuma vs Mesquite golf prices in winter

Prices below were seen in October 2026 on official rate pages and live booking engines. Rates change, and several winter 2026-27 and 2027 tables had not been posted yet.

On price the two are not close: a Yuma winter costs a fraction of a Mesquite one. At Desert Hills, the city course guide explains the walking rates, and the walking punch card ($500 for 10 rounds, January to March) works out to $50 a round. The cheapest Mesquite 18 in that table, the Palms at $109, is more than double that. For more on Yuma's seasonal price changes, see Yuma golf rates by season.

What Mesquite gives you for the money is pedigree. Wolf Creek is No. 59 on Golf Digest's 2025-26 list of America's 100 Greatest Public Courses and No. 5 in Nevada; Coyote Springs is No. 11 and Conestoga No. 20 in the state. Wolf Creek plays to a 147 slope from 6,785 yards. Yuma's toughest public layout, Las Barrancas, is 127 from 6,888 yards, and the Las Barrancas course guide covers its hillier, wash-crossing holes. No Yuma course lists a national ranking.

Passes and staying for a whole winter

This is where Yuma pulls far ahead for snowbirds. There is no Yuma-wide pass, but several courses sell their own:

  • Mesa del Sol, 2026-27: 6-month individual $3,500, 6-month family $5,650, 12-month individual $4,400. Passes include green fees, cart, range and sales tax. The Mesa del Sol course guide has the pass rules, including the start-date limits.
  • Coyote Wash, FY 2026-27: season pass (October to April 30) $2,500 single or $3,500 couple, and a transferable 10-play punch card with cart for $600.
  • Desert Hills: 10-play cards at $650 with cart or $500 walking, valid January to March, plus a $150 10-play cart card valid all year.

The Mesquite map data shows no published visitor season-pass prices; Coyote Willows mentions an annual pass with reduced rates, but no price. The discounts there are resident rates for Clark County, Nevada and Washington County, Utah locals, and the Coyote Club at Coyote Springs ($159 a year) is also limited to Nevada and Washington County residents. Our Yuma golf passes guide covers each Yuma program in detail.

Lodging follows the same pattern. Yuma's RV resorts publish monthly rates: Cocopah Bend RV & Golf Resort, with its own 18 on site, lists $705 a month plus electricity on its card dated Nov 1, 2025. The Mesquite map lists casino hotels, condos and villas but no RV parks or monthly rates. Mesquite's casino rooms can be cheap midweek (Virgin River showed $46.80 Sunday to Thursday for December 2026 and January 2027), which suits a one-week trip better than a three-month stay.

Getting there: airports and drives

Mesquite is the easier fly-in trip. Las Vegas has nonstops from most of the US and Canada, and the drive is about 91 miles of I-15, roughly 97 minutes on a free-flow estimate. The Salt Lake Express shuttle runs from the airport to two Mesquite casinos in about 1 hr 25 min, for $33-$41 one way on the date checked.

Yuma takes more effort. Its own airport has only American Eagle, with nonstops to Phoenix and Dallas/Fort Worth, and round trips from Phoenix were about $470-$520 in January. Most visitors fly into Phoenix (189 miles, 3 hr 14 min by Google Maps on a Friday) or San Diego (177 miles, 2 hr 50 min). For Canadians, WestJet flies nonstop to Phoenix daily from Calgary, six days a week from Edmonton and twice a week from Saskatoon, and WestJet and Air Canada fly daily from Vancouver. Flights to Yuma for golf compares the options.

Driving from Calgary, Google Maps puts Yuma at about 23 hr 26 min and 2,531 km. Google's fastest route follows I-15 through Utah to Las Vegas, which takes you right past Mesquite on the way south. Our Mesquite data doesn't give a drive time from Canada, so we haven't quoted one.

Time zones: one hour apart all winter

Yuma keeps Arizona time (MST) all year with no daylight saving. Mesquite is on Pacific time and changes clocks. From Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 14, 2027, Yuma is one hour ahead of Mesquite and Las Vegas; the rest of the year they match. Mesquite has a twist of its own: the Palms Golf Club sits across the line in Littlefield, Arizona, on Arizona time, and which clock its winter tee sheet uses is not confirmed, so ask when you book. The Yuma time zone guide covers Canadian clocks too, including Alberta's switch to UTC-6 all year.

Overseed: who closes when

Mesquite closes earlier and harder. In 2026 its courses closed in turn from Aug 30 (Wolf Creek) to Oct 6 (Oasis Palmer), and the stored dates left about Sep 14 to 26 with no 18-hole course in Mesquite open. Coyote Springs, about 69 minutes away, does not overseed.

Yuma's closures run from late September to late October. On the Arizona Golf Association's 2026 list, Las Barrancas closed one nine at a time (front Sep 17 to Oct 3, back Oct 2 to 23), and Mesa del Sol does not close for overseed at all. So for an October trip Yuma has more golf open, while for a November trip both towns are on fresh rye. Yuma golf overseed dates has each course's schedule.

Which town suits you

Choose Yuma if you want to stay one to three months, play four or five times a week and keep the cost down. The warmer mornings mean early tee times are playable, the passes and punch cards make daily golf affordable, and RV resorts and monthly rentals are set up for winter visitors. It also suits Canadians flying into Phoenix or Palm Springs. Start with Yuma winter golf for snowbirds.

Choose Mesquite if you want a one-week trip built around famous courses, are happy to pay about $110-$230 a round in winter, and value a short drive from Las Vegas. The Mesquite map and our Mesquite winter golf guide cover its courses, frost-delay mornings and winter rates. Canadians weighing a full season there can read Canadian snowbird golf in Mesquite.

Consider both if you are driving down I-15 from Alberta: a week of bucket-list rounds in Mesquite, then a longer, cheaper stay in Yuma. For a third option, our Yuma vs Mesa vs Palm Springs comparison looks at the bigger desert golf markets.

Plan it on the map

Every Yuma course, RV resort and hotel in this comparison is on the Yuma 3D map, with drive times, tee ratings and the rates seen in October 2026. The $30 plan can build a short trip or a whole winter stay with a weekly course rotation. Check the best time to golf in Yuma before you pick your dates.
