Guide emblem: Destin vs Gulf Shores golf: two Gulf Coast golf towns compared

Destin vs Gulf Shores golf comes down to resorts versus value. Destin has the stronger high end: four Sandestin courses, the private Watersound Club trio for inn guests, and Kelly Plantation and Regatta Bay as public picks. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have more simply public courses, more published winter deals and Kiva Dunes, a top-ranked public course.

Both are Central Time beach towns with bermuda golf, a spring peak and a hurricane season. This guide compares them on the things that decide a golf trip. Gulf Shores figures come from our Gulf Shores golf map research, read in October 2026.

Quick facts

  • Destin's best public rounds: Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay, the Raven.
  • Gulf Shores' best public round: Kiva Dunes, about $149 to $175 before the afternoon in fall 2026.
  • Stay-to-play: Burnt Pine (Sandestin guests) and the Watersound Club courses (St. Joe inn guests) in Destin.
  • Airports: VPS for Destin (33 min); Pensacola for Gulf Shores (69 min).
  • Winter: Gulf Shores publishes more snowbird packs; Destin has Sandestin's Snowbird card and Shalimar Pointe's membership.

The courses: resorts vs public value

Destin's strength is depth at the top. Sandestin owns four courses: the Raven, Baytowne, the Links and Burnt Pine. Three take public play at higher rates, and Burnt Pine, the hardest on the property, is for members and resort guests only, after 1 p.m. At the east end of 30A, the private Watersound Club courses, Camp Creek, Shark's Tooth and The Third, are sold to Camp Creek Inn and Watersound Inn guests at $295 a round. Note that after Hurricane Isaias in October 2026, Shark's Tooth was closed and Camp Creek was playing nine holes.

The public core is short but strong: Kelly Plantation, renovated in 2024, at about $90 to $119 in late October 2026; Regatta Bay, the toughest course in Destin; and Indian Bayou, the best-reviewed value on GolfPass. See the Kelly Plantation course guide and the Regatta Bay course guide.

Gulf Shores' strength is breadth. Our Gulf Shores board lists 18 courses, most of them simply public or semi-private: Kiva Dunes, Gulf Shores Golf Club five minutes from the beach, the two Arnold Palmer courses at Craft Farms, Peninsula's 27 holes, GlenLakes in Foley and Lost Key with paspalum from tee to green. Our best golf courses in Gulf Shores guide ranks them, and the Gulf Shores golf courses guide lists every one.

At the top end the two towns cost about the same. Destin's advantage is Sandestin's resort-guest rate, which saved $14 to $29 a round on the 2026 rate card. Gulf Shores' advantage is more courses in the $60 to $100 range near the beach. Our Destin golf rates guide has the full Destin list, and cheap golf in Gulf Shores covers the Alabama side.

Winter and snowbirds

Both towns draw Midwest and Canadian snowbirds. In Destin, Sandestin's Snowbird card (for extended stays booked directly with Sandestin Rentals) cut the Links and Baytowne to $45 plus tax from November 2026 to January 2027 and the Raven to $65 in November and December. Shalimar Pointe sells a snowbird membership at $1,150 for three months, single, with unlimited golf and cart.

On the Gulf Shores side, our research found GlenLakes' snowbird six-pack at $350 plus tax for six rounds (about $58 each) and the Craft Farms Winter Six-Pack at $420 for six rounds ($70 each, to February 15, 2027). Peninsula says it keeps its turf green all winter.

Weather is nearly identical: January normals of 63.1F and 45.3F in Destin against 61.1F and 42.2F at the Gulf Shores station. See Destin winter golf for snowbirds and the Gulf Shores snowbird golf guide.

Getting there

Destin has its own airline airport. VPS is about 33 minutes from Destin harbour, with Allegiant's large seasonal Midwest network plus American, Delta, Southwest and seasonal JetBlue and Sun Country. Gulf Shores uses Pensacola, about 69 minutes from Gulf Shores and 56 from Orange Beach. Pensacola is 91 minutes from Destin, which makes it the natural airport for a trip that takes in both. Both towns are on Central Time. See flights to Destin and flying to Gulf Shores for golf.

Which town for which golfer

  • Resort-first couples or groups: Destin. Stay inside Sandestin for guest rates and Burnt Pine, or at a St. Joe inn for the Watersound Club.
  • Value-first groups: Gulf Shores, with more public courses in the $60 to $100 range, or Destin's Fort Walton Beach side, where the Fort Walton Beach Golf Club Pines runs on dynamic rates, seen at about $37 to $67 with cart in summer 2026.
  • Snowbirds: both work; compare Sandestin's Snowbird card and Shalimar Pointe's membership with the Gulf Shores six-packs.
  • Long-hitters wanting a test: Regatta Bay in Destin, or Windswept Dunes at Freeport, 7,752 yards from the tips. Kiva Dunes on the Alabama side.

Questions golfers ask

Is Destin or Gulf Shores better for golf?

Destin has more high-end golf, with Sandestin's four courses and the private Watersound Club courses for inn guests, and a short public core of Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay and Indian Bayou. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have more courses that are simply public, a cheaper winter, and Kiva Dunes as a top-ranked public course. Pick Destin for resorts, Gulf Shores for value.

Which is cheaper for golf, Destin or Gulf Shores?

At the top end they are similar: Kiva Dunes ran about $149 to $175 before the afternoon in fall 2026, against $159 public at the Raven. Destin's cheapest full 18s, Shalimar Pointe and the Fort Walton Beach city courses, ran in the $34 to $67 range.

Which airport do I use for Destin and Gulf Shores?

For Destin, VPS is about 33 minutes from Destin harbour. For Gulf Shores, Pensacola (PNS) is about 69 minutes from Gulf Shores and 56 from Orange Beach on free-flow estimates. PNS is also 91 minutes from Destin, so it can serve a trip that takes in both.

Can you play both Destin and Gulf Shores on one trip?
