Destin winter golf: how a snowbird season on the Emerald Coast works

Destin winter golf runs from about December to March: mild days in the low to mid 60s, cool mornings, quiet tee sheets and the year's lowest rates. Snowbirds get extra deals, including Sandestin's $45 snowbird card for the Links and Baytowne and Shalimar Pointe's $1,150 three-month membership. Expect dormant bermuda on most courses.

Destin winter weather for golf

Destin winter golf is about mild afternoons rather than heat, so plan rounds for late morning and early afternoon.

NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Destin Executive Airport. Wind is a 2016-2025 average from airport daily summaries, not a NOAA normal. January is the coolest and windiest month.

The bay side is colder. Niceville's January normal low is 38.0F against 45.3F at the beach, so book later morning tee times at Bluewater Bay, Rocky Bayou and Shalimar. What the courses look like in winter

Emerald Coast courses are bermudagrass. Resort courses have commonly overseeded with ryegrass in October and November, while many daily-fee and local courses let bermuda go dormant, tan but playable, from about December to March. Practice varies by course and year.

• The Links and Baytowne overseed their greens each fall: the Links closed November 3-9, 2026 and Baytowne November 2-8, 2026, with cheap recovery-week rates after.
• The Raven lists no overseed closure, and winter dormancy is unconfirmed.
• Shalimar Pointe: not published, but a reviewer saw very little green in the dormant season.

Winter golf deals for snowbirds

The deals below are what make Destin winter golf cheap for long stays; most need a 28-night stay or a membership.

Sandestin cards. Snowbird and Player's Club cardholders also get nine holes after 1 PM at half rate at the Links and Baytowne. Neither card includes Burnt Pine. Shalimar Pointe. Shalimar Pointe has had no initiation fee since 2023, and the snowbird membership includes unlimited golf with cart, practice facilities, 4-week booking and 10% off in the shop. Greens were rebuilt to TifEagle in 2023. See the Shalimar Pointe course guide.

Fort Walton Beach Golf Club. The city's two courses use dynamic pricing, members pay 50%, and free Winter Spark 9-hole leagues start on November 5 and 8, 2026. Ask the pro shop about the snowbird special. See the FWB Pines course guide.

Gator Lakes. Gator Lakes at Hurlburt Field has been open to civilians since April 2023. The six-month pass suits snowbirds staying in Fort Walton Beach.

Where snowbirds stay

Times are routed free-flow estimates. Newman-Dailey's headline rate is undated; its only dated example is from last season, a three-bedroom Gulf-front Crystal Dunes condo at $3,850 a month for January or February alone. Building a winter week

The simplest way to plan Destin winter golf is to pick your base first, then the deal that goes with it. A Sandestin-based snowbird can play the Links and Baytowne on the card for $45 several times a week, add the Raven at $65 before January, and fit in a public round elsewhere. Winter events and holidays

• Thanksgiving week (November 26, 2026) and Christmas to New Year bring family rental demand and higher rates.
• 30A Songwriters Festival, January 15-18, 2027, fills 30A and Grand Boulevard lodging; little effect on golf.
• Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday February 9, 2027: small local parades in Fort Walton Beach and Destin.
• Spring break starts in early March and is the biggest price and traffic driver.

Getting here

VPS, the Destin-Fort Walton Beach airport, is 33 minutes from Destin. Allegiant's large seasonal network serves many Midwest cities, and Sun Country flies seasonally from Minneapolis/St. Paul. No nonstop flights from Canada were found as of October 2026; Canadians connect through Atlanta or Minneapolis (Delta) or Charlotte, Chicago or Dallas (American).
